Assassin’s Creed IV on PS4/XB1/PC: Ubisoft details the next-gen differences

I really *really* hope Ubisoft will have us review the PC version of this game instead of the PS3/360 one. I don't think I'll be able to stand playing the current gen version at all :(
I'll upgrade my PC just for this if need be :)

What's your PC's current specs blim?

I really liked AC3 and never really got the hate it gets on gaf, and only gaf, Anybody I've talked to in real life thought it was a refreshing and unique experience being able to play as a Native American during colonial America, and that running through trees was fucking awesome, as well as being in colonial Boston and New York. Little issues like not being able to 100% sync every mission, or the fact that a small bug will pop up every now and then doesn't effect their experience very much at all. Is it perfect? Of course not, but the way gaf describes AC3 you would think it personally bitch slapped their mother and slept with their girlfriend. Some people just let the smallest things ruin their enjoyment in a game. "Ahh WTF can't I 100% sync this mission" or "goddammint how the fuck am I supposed to craft", or worse of all "gahh why am I 5 hours in and still not able to play the guy on the box" and so on and so forth.

I just don't know if it's just short attention span or ADD but people seem to just want everything at a blazingly fast paced. I enjoyed the 30+ minute boat ride to America that really does a good job to put in perspective how crazy and dreadful a journey like that really was. I loved spending time with Haytham and having that flesh out the characters and motives. Playing as Connor as a child was awesome and seeing character progression from a child to an adult is something we don't get enough of in games. I loved AC3 for just it's attention to detail for recreating such an impressive setting and really making you feel like a part of that history. Walking through colonial Boston and New York is a surreal experience and embodies what I love about this series, the authenticity and attention to detail that many people on gaf just either don't care about or not recognize.

I also never understood the criticism of Connor not being developed enough. He most definitely had an arc and by the end of that game is very much a different character with a new perspective and set of ideals. And ya, Connor can come off as being a bit of a dick, but so are the people who are around him. His conversation with Sam Adams where he calls him out for being a hypocrite by owning slaves, yet fighting for freedom and liberty says all about the people he's in contact with. Their greedy, privileged, and rich people who could give two shits about what happens to Native Americans, or common people. It would have been easy to just paint this romanticized and glorified picture of America during the revolutionary war that's common in fiction and culture, but they centered it on a Native American and made it a more personal and believable story which I respected. I think people just wanted another happy go lucky, flamboyant, and loveable personality that is Ezio, but Connor is a character that grew up in a completely different environment than that of Ezio so it's natural he's not going to be that guy. Ezio embodies an archetype of an idolized Renaissance lifestyle, while Connor is a much more believable character. I love them both, but Connor doesn't have to be the super loveable likeable guy that is Ezio to still be just as great a character.

So ya I guess I just have a different outlook on AC3. I never gave a fuck about the modern day stuff so that part of the game's storyline never bothered me, and I never ran into any major bugs that so many people claim ruined their experience.

This video really impressed me in a way I didn't think was possible. I said I wouldn't get excited over an AC game again but here they are pulling me in again.

Hmm, assuming it's optimized unlike previous ACs, still should be able to get some decent performance but your GPU could probably use an upgrade anyway given the games coming down the pipeline.

I'm not exactly a PC gamer though. Heck, I'm not even really a gamer any more considering I must play 3 to 4 games a year to completion, one of them being the yearly AC game...
I need a fast processor for video encoding, the GPU was just the one we had as a spare from an upgrade to one of the site's reviewer, I can't really say I'm doing much with it right now ;)

I really like the rain and foliage stuff. Honestly was not expecting to see some cool stuff from this game. It's funny because it seems like this game is looking better and better while Watch Dog is degrading into meh territory for me. Ubisoft needs to do this for Watch Dogs.

To think of what a margin of what all of this technology must have cost to hire talented writers and quality designers.

Like getting the rain drops to be individually lit could have gotten Cormac McCarthy on board or something.

I was fooled by all this stuff for AC 3 too :( Really thought that was gonna be amazing

I will wait and see on this one, but I will not be fooled again

game looks absolutely amazing to me (THAT OCEAN, SERIOUSLY), and i don't think Ubi gets enough credit for their tech wizardry.

surely this will be the best looking open-world game ever on consoles when it releases. and i can't miss out on that. i've got to have this with my new PS4.

if it still has screentearing though, i will laugh and cry and then laugh and cry some more.

damn that rain gif looks swell

edit: although if it's that windy, the trees should be blowing a bit more wildly as well

I don't blame you at all. AC3 looked marvelous in previews too.

It really did and I'm a sucker for forests and snow and usually overlook poor gameplay cos I'm biased towards those things, but that game really let me down.

I have a feeling this would too if I played it. It still seems to have to lack luster gameplay udnerneath that shiny surface

I'm playing through my Steam copy of AC3 in preparation for 4, and its not terrible. It's not great either. I'm having fun with it. /shrugs

The naval battles are definitely the best part of 3, so I'm excited for 4.

yup, pretty much the whole reason I am excited about AC4. Naval battles were awesome. Some worrying previews though about them somehow simplifying things control-wise and such though, making boats even faster... I don't want it to be like an arcade naval game or some shit. AC3's naval battles were simple enough.

Wow, looks more impressive than Watch Dogs. Looks like they have made some strides in the past couple months.

Nice work AC team, maybe there is hope yet for this franchise.

Damn. Looks like they actually put effort into this port, unlike Activation did with Ghosts.

That video sold me on the game.

Not I just need to start and finish AC Brotherhood, Revelations, ACIII and AC Liberation before November... :(

All of which I already own aside from ACIII.

I enjoyed the story overall but i wished the combat was more complex it was my least favorite part.

What's the combat like? I haven't paid attention. AC3's combat was a downgrade. That's kind of the biggest problem with AC3, it attempts to do things that the engine can't handle. Assassin's Creed is not a fun game to play. It's a fun game to look cool in, it's a fun game to explore in, but the gameplay mechanics themselves are, at best, a way to get you through the story.

The problem with AC3 is they tried to make missions around the stealth, running, and combat like they were deeper and more responsive than they actually were. They tried to force stealth in a game where you 'accidentally' climb objects and expose yourself all the time. They tried to force platforming on a game that you constantly yell at the tv, 'No not that way!' and they tried to make the combat Batman-esque, but they didn't have the animation or responsiveness of a Batman system.

AC2's combat was painfully simple, but you never got frustrated with it at least. AC3's combat was somehow simple AND frustrating.

Ha, honestly it seems like everyone except gaf liked AC3. I had a lot of fun with it personally.

I really liked it until the abysmal end of the main campaign. That almost managed to ruin it for me and had me thinking about not buying AC IV when previously AC was my favorite series.

This video has convinced me otherwise. Because I usually don't care that much about graphics, but god damn. Also pirates.

The game looks very impressive, but will it be 30fps locked? Or a mess like the previous games? Can't say I trust the trailers because the ones they've shown on AC3 were very stable, the framerate seemed a lot better and in the end it was the worse performing AC, right there next to the first.

I'm getting this on the ps4 but my confidence has been shaken before and these games aren't exactly well known for their performance.

So out of box the PC version will look like this? Performance in AC3 wasn't so good on my PC. Might be that time I put a whole new setup together.

You're kidding?

No reason for the PS4/XB1 version not to be locked at 30. Current gen versions will probably be as janky as last year.

All of this looked really, really good.

And as someone who skipped AC: rev and AC 3, I am actually excited for a new AC game! Looking forward to some next gen (cross gen, I guess) open world games at launch

I am about 80% sure I read that next gen versions are 60 fps

double edit:

100% sure

I still think the faces look pretty bad for next-gen. The Last of Us looks considerably better, granted it is not an open world game but I expect better.

It's cross gen.

They could have just cranked it to 1080p and called it a day like what happened with CoD:Ghosts.

I think its good we are seemingly getting a ton of improvements.

Wait for ACTUAL ground up next gen games to show what is possible.

Which is weird since they seemingly went to great lengths with this weather, sea and foliage technology.

It just kinda sticks out like a sore thumb.
