My own thoughts on what Superman should *be*:

Superman is hard to make interesting. To make Superman interesting, then the big fight scenes and huge destruction they try to input into a Superman movie has to be toned down.

Superman has to be about how he can't handle not being able to save everyone constantly. It has to be about how he tries so damn hard, that despite the hardest foe he faces, his biggest challenge is having to deal with his own limitations.

There's a point where throwing bigger and bigger baddies against Supes just falls apart. His greatest enemy has to be his own ego in terms of keeping the world in a bottle.

This thread wouldnt exist the way it is right now if BvS had turned out well, you know. It's a blessing in disguise. Let us all thank BvS. Thank you, BvS.

I don't think Superman is hard to make interesting. I think more people are just not interested in what makes Superman interesting.

It's weird, though. It's a catch 22 position.

Batman...can be interesting because his plans and his character can make an interesting film.

Superman though, expectations are set to a god-like being who looks human and can wreck shit, but what you end up getting is a Transformers-esque movie where shit is being blown up and people getting knocked around hundreds of meters in order to portray this.

If they went to make a Superman film that focuses on his morality, then you lose out on it being an explosive blockbuster of sorts-Either the filmmakers don't have confidence in it, or movie-goers go to a superhero movie expecting explosions and dazzling pyrotechnics.

Starts at 6pm, got here at 4:45 and already in my seat. An hour to go still but something about the bad reviews made me more intrigued than I was just last weekend.

Same thing happened with Fantastic Four, but I bet there's stuff I'll like in this movie, as where that movie was a trainwreck.

Pretty much. Some people are simply more interested in a big, dumb popcorn flick with Dragon Ball fighting than a more nuanced personable character-focused story about justice, hope, and family.

It's basically times like these where I wonder why the hell they didn't go with the "safe" route and tried to make a very easy to get into, widely appealing movie. Even if it would get complaints on the internet by people who wanted something more experimental, maybe rightfully so.

Like I should be applauding them for not doing it but also I'm like "wtf were you thinking". Maybe they could have pulled it off if they had a director capable of making a film with some semblance of nuance.

Like I have friends reading about this movie kinda pissed that they can't take their kids to a Batman/Superman movie and enjoy it together. Part of me is glad we can get a superhero movie that isn't just dumbed down for kids and families, but also, it's Batman and Superman and I feel like everyone should be able to enjoy these characters on screen together for the first time. I'm very conflicted lol, I guess if it was just a better movie overall then I wouldn't care as much about the very narrow direction they are going in compared to say, Marvel (not saying their way of doing things is the right or only way, just different)
Saying that there's a safe route they could've gone suggests that they took a chance on something radically different, when the problem just seems to be that Snyder doesn't know what he's doing and they threw in as many disparate plot threads as they could.

Off to see double bill with Mos with mates from work...ones a hardcore Batman fan...hoping to hell he enjoys otherwise work will be unbearable!

You can make a good film with Superman. Donner managed it despite having to fight off the daft input of the Salkinds. The issue currently is the studios seem to lack faith just putting a fun adventure on film with the character as a positive role model will be popular plus they're clearly still in thrall to tone Nolan took with Batman.

I think they're wrong but no way to know of course.

Uh, now I think you're not getting me.

I never said that what he doesn't get is that Superman can't fail. I said that Superman reacts to the destruction around him in an apathetic way, and he is under the impression that fans are objecting to the destruction rather than superman's reaction.

The evidence for Snyder not getting superman isn't in how he depicts superman, it's how responds to the criticism.

You know how could havê fixed this in The first movie?

Instead of kissing Louis in the middle of rubble, use the same background and make Superman look at all that, the people crying and all the destruction.

There, just that. He doesn't have to say anything, just look at all that he can cause if he doesn't control himself.

I have seen this movie.

This movie is bad.

This movie is really bad.

This movie is bad and should feel bad.

This movie is Suckerpunch levels of Snyder-bad.

I have no interest in watching ANYTHING ELSE touched by nuclear-grade toxic hands of Zack Snyder. WB needs to stop this man and re-engineer ALL of their plans for this franchise. I predict that this movie will have no legs. No legs of any sort. The first 90 minutes are composed of complete dead air with nothing even remotely entertaining happening. Dull as a motherfucker. The "plot" is just Snyder and company scrambling for reasons to make Superman and Batman fight.

Then they fight.

This movie has taught me that I'm actually not interesting in watching something like that.

Welp.

I thought Mahvel might be the one that drives the genre into the ground, but DC might actually kill the whole freaking thing in one single blow.
