Battlefield 2042 | Review Thread

So far, so. . .good? This hourglass map sucks (way too much empty space and no one likes sand), but everything else is good. Performance on PS5 is solid (though the button mapping is kind of odd. . .having to take your finger off the triggers to heal or throw out support is not ideal) and I didn't have any trouble getting into a map. Also the Specialist system is more than fine given how much hand wringing people were giving. I think the action stopped once or twice enough for me to look around and see the same avatars running about; definitely much more difficult at range than close. The loadout types also seem to give quite a bit of flexibility in making your play style your own. Overall, I think 7/8 out of 10 is more than fair for what is obviously going to be a long supported GaaS (is it a Gaas? I didn't see an ingame store).

I just want to know if you can do handgun only matches, and if it'll be popular.

You can set up those matches in Portal. People are already using the editor app/site to make Gun Game modes.

PSA that cross play is enabled by default and you can not opt out from within the game settings it makes you shut it off in the Xbox system settings
Plus I played 3 matches and had plenty of kills but have gotten a total of 290 xp out of the first 3000 needed for rank 2 out of all 3 matches (have restarted and still not getting proper xp)
Had one game was near a tank when it exploded and my frame rate on the Series X went to a slide show and stayed at around 10 fps at best until I restarted the game.

Sounds like a Battlefield launch. Maybe you killed a lot of bots and they give less xp? Have you noticed bots like in the beta?

They have come out and said its a known issue and restarting the game catches your xp up and trying to fix it

And yeah its a typical BF launch but seems worse then usual especially for how little actually comes with the game, its for sure leaning on Portal and letting players do the work

Something must be fucked with the servers or might of been a glitch in regards to the fps drop. From what I was playing last night performance felt great. Only time I noticed something was on the sand filled sky scraper map. Had weird low frames or lag for a min or two, weird thing is there wasn't anything actually really taxing happening around me.

Only played on Series X but according to my VRR counter the performance was solid.

Not saying this deserves it cos I haven’t played it, but reviewers hardly ever bomb big budget games from big publishers these days. There’s a symbiotic relationship at play where they feel like they need each other. Case in point for me was Cyberpunk. A lot of major publications have that 8s and 9s, when it clearly didn’t deserve them because of its parlous, unfinished launch state. I get they were only given PC versions to review but anyone who says that wasn’t a broken bugfest at launch is a liar, plus all missing content promised.

Played 2 matches of 2042 conquest and it’s not for me at all. Shame as I’ve always been a fan of the series. Portal is great but I’ve played there are only a handful of maps available.
If portal is supported properly with new maps then I’ll pick this up next year. Currently though, oof….

Bomb being defined how? COD: Vanguard was just released and is barely hanging on to a strong rating on OPENCRITIC. FC6 also didn't set the world on fire. I'm sure there are numerous other examples, however not every game gets pushed out with overwhelming critical acclaim these days. This of course assumes a person is only looking at a raw number for an up or down and not digging into the reviews themselves.

I had 1 crash and twice now the frame rate turns into a slide show after being close to a major explosion.
Funny enough the maps in Portal run so much better than the launch maps

Ralph is one of the best reviewers on Youtube, and my opinion has nothing to do with the fact I saw him in a JB Hifi in Sydney CBD once, and therefore I am practically best mates with him.

No crashes, dropped to about 2 FPS a couple of times but recovered quickly. Played about 5 hours fyi.
yup . but haven't played that yet . crashing on a few diff games a decent bit but a lot on forza . duno what's wrong with it
Did you play regular 128 warfare or portal? Portal seems to run better so that's why I wonder.

man i played a bunch earlier today and had a bunch of unlocks... configured my loadout then backed out and turned it off. Came back a couple hours later and my unlocks are mostly all gone

Honestly? I don’t think it is better than Vanguard. I never thought I’d say that a CoD game is better than Battlefield but Vanguard feels better to play and is just a better value package in my opinion.
I’ve played a few games of 2042 now and Portal is literally the only thing that would keep me playing.

I don't care much for review scores or opinions from outlets, journalists, etc. If anything, I typically look at videos and come up with my own opinion. But he's shared the same opinion or close to it as me, multiple times. So, he's the first and only person I usually go to if I'm remotely curious.

Is there a way to change the minimap position? Feels so weird having the map in the bottom left of the screen, i havent played a BF game in a while and it's throwing me off.

honestly I think COD Vanguard is significantly better than BF2042 this year. I have played both and it’s not even close. Not sure what the f happened with Battlefield!

I can't seem to muster much of a care for this one. I played hundreds of hours on BF4 and probably twice as much with BF1, but BFV didn't really sit too well with me for the most part and this new one doesn't move the needle for me. With Halo coming out and Forza Horizon 5 out, I just don't feel the need to play it.

Omg and the UI is a disaster. A clusterfuck of menus and controller keys and sub menus and just a MESS. That alone is a huge turn off.

I played a couple of matches. It seemed to run ok. Better than the beta did that's for sure. I lost interest pretty fast. I played one map that had soe kind of arena in it. Didn't know what the fuck I was doing. I just wandered around until some guy shot me. Then I quit and went back to Skyrim.

7 huge maps for All Out War. 6 More in Portal. Conquest and Breakthrough in All Out War and Portal additionally gets Rush and TDM. In addition to those is Hazard zone.
More maps (and probably modes) will be coming throughout each season.

shooting the gun obviously feels better in COD
But the sandbox aspect of the game is where the creativity and adventure in battlefield shines more.
like you think shit is sweet, you’re holding down an area, just got a couple kills while inside a building and then a tank blows a hall in the wall and now you’re exposed.
or your behind cover and a random ATV jumps off a small hill and kills you
