Behold Nintendo Switch (March 2017, Hybrid w/ Dock, Detachable Controllers, Nvidia)

They dropped the gimmicks, they're converging their studios to focus on one platform, and they're giving mid-tier games an ideal system.

I'll admit, I'm a Nintendo fanboy... But this really looks like the thing Nintendo needed. And I can't fucking wait.

So is this thing going to be more powerful than the Wii U or not? With the news having come out that the dock doesn't give any extra power what are we looking at? Additionally, people say here all the time Vita and PSP never really took off because no one really wanted console style games on the go... yet here this is.

You think the 360-powered Wii U could run Skyrim Special Edition?

I still don't get this X.X

Agreed. It's a solid mid-tier gaming solution for every situation.

Wow, this thing looks weirdly modern in ways I don't normally associate Nintendo with.

Either way, looks good. I'm super fucking excited about the possibility of playing Monster Hunter on it

Wish it was called the New Wii U though...

Looks pretty cool. I like the concept of mini controllers for portable split screen play. Good to see a pro controller for TV use, too. Curious about a lot of the details: price, resolution, battery life, etc.

Overall I'm optimistic.

if there's literally no reason to have a touch screen, why would they include it?

Quite honestly, it would be really weird in this day and age for a device that looks like that to *not* have a touchscreen, regardless of how much the games actually used it.

I would presume that devs would be completely forbidden from making games require it in any way (since that would obviously break TV mode) but they could use it as an optional input method if they wanted to. Would certainly make the system more friendly to ports of mobile games.

It's not absolutely necessary, but even a really basic one like in the 3DS would be nice.

One of the core concepts of this thing seems to be preserving/maintaining the game experience between the console mode and portable modes. A touch screen on the portable would significantly hamper this. Unless it exists to just like navigate system menus outside of the actual games.

Fortunately, it looks like those disgraceful silicone sleeves won't be made for this. The tablet wouldn't fit in the dock with it on and you couldn't remove the controllers.

I wonder if they'll give the system and developers the flexibility of making handheld only games that don't offer docked modes and vice versa. This thing is obviously gonna replace the 3DS (no matter what 3rd pillar line Nintendo tries to feed us). If all games are required to have a console mode, it's really gonna kill off smaller, quickies DS/3DS type games.
Yeah, I'm really curious too. Nintendo acts like they haven't even decided themselves (see the 'no comment' interview earlier), but of course they have to know when it's this close to full production.

The ideal scenario, to me, would be to have both options, but mandate that alternate control schemes be available. That way I could count on being able to at least play everything with a controller, even if that meant discovering awful controls and deciding to opt for touch.

What are you gonna do with the tablet only portion?

I could use it to play some angry birds type of shit. Browsing. Mobile phone like games.

I need a touch screen for that.

Also the joy-cons better have fucking gyros inside.

I mean the offiziell hearthstone account already wrote a tweet to nintendo with not much in it, but hell if this isn't some kind of tease that they might bring it to switch I don't know...

They finally nailed the marketing. That two second switch logo animation is going to be at the start of every single console and game video.

I'm just catching up on this now (busy day), but wow...what a reveal. Instant purchased by me! Or, at least, it will be, once pre-orders go live.

I'm not entirely sure how much I'll use the console outside of the house (I'd probably use my 3DS for something like that), but it'll be really cool being able to attach/de-attach the thing from the dock and move from room-to-room. Also, TRADITIONAL CONTROLS! Thank you, Nintendo.

Now I just need a price and a pre-order date. Please, don't make me wait too long.

Kind of looking forward to the proper reveal now as well. I wonder how much left there is to disclose. Really interested to hear and see Nintendo vision going forward, and wonder if they will make use of that SDCP (i can't remember the acroymn) patent that looked at boosting power through cloud based services and also external units.

Just recently got off work and haven't had a chance to talk about my reaction to the Switch yet. My appreciation of Nintendo has fallen off a cliff in the last decade, but this trailer resuscitated the starry-eyed Nintendo fan in me that I thought was totally dead. I gotta say, I'm incredibly impressed.

I'm also pretty surprised at the potential mainstream appeal this could have; my wife, who only rarely plays video games, watched the video and said she wanted a Switch for herself. I think that's pretty impressive.

I do have concerns (battery life and price) but if neither of those turns out to be absolutely egregious, I don't see any reason I wouldn't pre-order this thing.

Finally, it's actually a good time to be a NIntendo fan.

Initially was kind of disappointed but when I think of this as Nintendo's next portable which happens to have a tv dock, rather than their next home console, it's quite appealing. Just hope they get the price right.

I wonder:

When docked, the tablet sticks out from the cradle a bit. This probably makes it easier to remove, but I wonder if they could use that thin strip that's visible to show some game info. Like in the original Zelda, the upper portion of the screen showed map and items. Or it could just be a solid color showing who's turn it is, etc.

Also I wonder if any games will be able to display to the TV and the tablet simultaneously, so you could potentially play games similar to Nintendoland? Or 2-player games with each player having their own screen. Since they've already tread that ground with the Wii U it seems like a good possibility.

I'm not seeing any scroll bumpers. Also looks like symmetrical sticks were thrown out for the 360 layout. That sucks, the best part about the Wii U stick positioning was easy access to the face buttons without having to shift your thumb. Kind of bummed about a lack of proper d-pad on the detachable controllers, too. Those will not do for traditional d-pad usage. Glad to see some analog triggers though, hoping they have an end click like the Gamecube. Good to hear they're sticking with March! Gonna wait to see the launch lineup before I make a decision.

Will Switch have 3rd party support on-par with PS4 and XOne?

If they can't get the heavy hitters like BF, CoD, GTA, and Far Cry then I don't see any reason to want it.

I already got burned on the Wii U with a very lackluster game library.

Something that kinda struck me, was how core oriented it seems to be. Guess since we saw DeNa on that dev list, that'll change when we get the full blow out, but it seems very odd to me somehow.

I think they went with asymmetrical so when the JoyCons are separated into two discrete controllers their orientation can be the same by default (analog stick on left, buttons on right) with the same shape and everything

DS games? The Wii U virtual console has a decent of amount of those games available to download. It'd be kind of silly to take the virtual console a step backwards. Then again, they did just that going from the Wii to the Wii U, so who knows...

I wouldn't expect that. If you aren't satisfied by Nintendo games with maybe a couple third party things then it's best to not get your hopes up since you are only setting yourself up for disappointment.
