Well if you look at the screen posted just above you can see there is a line of five ethernet ports across the top

This is why it is called the Nintendo Switch
I just sprayed tea out of my nose. Thanks for that.

I think they went with asymmetrical so when the JoyCons are separated into two discrete controllers their orientation can be the same by default (analog stick on left, buttons on right) with the same shape and everything
Yeah I'm sure, same case for the d-pad buttons probably. I'm not sure it was the smartest decision, though. I'm sure a lot of their first party games will take advantage of this feature, but the only other games I see taking advantage of this are indie titles. I'm already scratching my head on how they're going to fit the Mario Kart controls on the joycons in a comfortable layout. There's no way you can use the bumper and trigger in that orientation without it feeling completely awkward.

They really should have just kept the NX name. Overall I'm still pretty hyped though. More so than I was when the Wii U was announced. Aesthetically the tablet looks 100X better than the bulky fisher price looking Wii U tablet. The joy controller though...

This was posted in one of the other threads, but that was the first thing that came to mind when I first saw it, lol.

Looks great and I definitely will get one. Playing the new Zelda game, Skyrim, or a Dark Souls during my commute would be awesome. I worry about the battery life though.

Pardon my ignorance but what's the difference between the Wii U and this aside from the fact that you can slip the sides off of the screen? What's so innovative about this console? Even the scene where they are sharing the two sides of the controller to play a game, it looks too small to be played comfortably.

Do not separate the audience the way that happened with WiiU and 3DS , I wouldn't call it innovative but yeah they finally get it

As someone who has a huge backlog on his PS4, Wii U, Vita and 3DS, and does not have a social circle in which a device like this would ever be used as shown in the video, I am prefectly content with not owning this.

I will consider it more next year when the library starts to flesh out. Assuming there is something I really want. But as of right now the only thing I won't be able to play is the new Mario game. I can wait.

Tbh, I would much rather have a PSVR to further expand the technology and ecosystem I already have.

The use case they didn't show you:

Using it to play touch-only games.

Given the audience they're supposedly targeting, this is almost certainly going to be a thing.

Using the Joy-Cons separately without the grip, Wii Remote and Nunchuk style?

We don't actually know if that's possible when the unit is in the dock. It obviously should be but they didn't show it and considering how messy this thing is it wouldn't surprise me if the grip was necessary.

A little anecdote:

I just showed the video to my SO. She plays games like Zelda, Pikmin and Lego games, but she's not too much into the devices itself. She still says Wii for Wii U, for example.

Her reaction? "That's cool!" What game she noticed immediately beside Zelda? Splatoon.

The name? Immediately stuck. It made sense. Especially since NX means nothing to her.

Should we get it? "Yeah, I think so, looks cool."

So, now that we finally have confirmation what this thing is, when are we expecting to get some substantial information on the actual launch lineup? I had been hoping that once Nintendo broke the seal on talking about this thing that the floodgates would open up for talking about the projects in the works. However, as we've seen with Bethesda, even companies showing games off in the reveal trailer aren't ready to discuss whether those games will ever make it to the NS. Is there going to be a big blowout event later this year or are we going to have to wait until 2017 to finally know what we'll be playing in 5 months?

I'm super excited about this product, but honestly games are so much more exciting than hardware. Can't wait to find out what is gonna launch alongside this console.

I only seen like 2% negativity on the NS. People on my facebook that mainly playing xbox, ps and pc even want one. 98% good impressions. Even on gaf most seem to like it.

It all depends on the price. If this comes out at $399 it will be a different story.

$299 or even $249 is what Nintendo needs to hit for this thing to get wide acceptance.

Looks interesting but why the hell was it necessary to write

NINTENDO SWITCH

in huge lettering across everything

Unless that is not the retail model then I'll be quiet lol

I can't get over how horrible the controller looks, aesthetically and for holding. It doesn't look comfortable in any of its three forms, not in one piece, not in two pieces, nor in just half a piece.

I'm far more impressed than I expected to be with this. The clip on controller looks very smooth and how it can break into 2 mini ones is genius. I'm interested to see if they do anything anything with the tablet part as in an operating system and app store (tightly controlled).

The dock feels more and more tacked on and unnecessary the more I think about it. Nobody calls the PSP a home console even though you can connect it to a television to play on. It's a tablet with proper controls for games. The home console thing feels forced.

Oh of course, people love the concept though firstly. They picked the right games to show off. They should definitely make a japanese tailored trailer as well.

Everyone else saw a good ol' pupper. If I get a dog I may name it Switch

You have to remember that Nintendo raised a generation of gamers who now have crippled hands thanks to Kid Icarus.

It would be quite rude to throw those people under the bus by making a default controller that you could actually hold. Those people suffered.

That said, it would be nice if Nintendo included one single photo of people using the d-pad in a contorted claw like grip. Just to be really inclusive.

This is pretty much where I'm at. I'm interested but considering the bloodbath my wallet will experience in Feb. next year, I'll probably end up waiting. Love the concept and name though.

I better get a fully functioning, high quality virtual console on this thing. I'm talking no dark filter, and don't trickle out the releases again. I don't want to be sitting here in October 2018 looking at the Virtual Console releases to see it's Tennis again.

Is this going to be powerful enough to emulate GameCube games? I've just had an image of portable Super Monkey Ball on the train.

The thread is pretty big... but has there been any talk about connecting to the internet if I want to use a cable to hardwire? Am I going to have to have an ethernet cable roll across the living room to connect?

I'd imagine the handheld unit has a wi-fi chip/module located inside.

There might then be an ethernet port in the dock.

I seriously doubt there'll be an ethernet port on the handheld unit, and if you're in the living room playing on the tv I'd imagine you'd have the ethernet connected to the dock.

But perhaps there's no ethernet at all. It wouldn't surprise me. The Wii U needed an adapter for ethernet.

I feel the same. The hype train on this thing seems to be glossing over ergonomics, potential battery life, the fact that half the games shown are on Wii U (or Skyrim). The hardware is interesting but it doesn't do anything truly revolutionary. The games shown seemed pretty bog-standard and as someone who felt let down by the Wii U and Wii I'm not all that excited.

The super cynic in me thinks it will still have a shitty Nintendo OS, shitty Nintendo ecosystem, shitty Nintendo internet functionality, over-priced and drip-fed VC games, an expensive library with meager discounts, lots of potential for broken or lost parts not easily replaced, etc.

Well, you got my attention, Nintendo. This is looking good and something I will probably get with a Zelda bundle.
Unlike Wii U, this felt new and fresh and something you would want to have. I am a little excited and can't wait to find out more about the console and software line-up.

The name is not bad and is growing on me. Much better than Wii U.

Switch really felt like a console made to meet my needs, as I won't always have access to our TV at home.

My dream device.

A portable with all of Nintendo's games.

I can finally burn my tv to the tround.

Finally, the gaming utopia I've always wanted.

Thank you Nintendo, for making my dream come true.

Splatoon 2, New Mario, and Mario Kart 9 make this announcement even better.

Now the long wait for more news. We need price and launch lineup now.

But for this moment, thank you Nintendo.

Is anyone worried about the d-pad? They sacrificed their standard d-pad for something that can function as a controller independently with an analogue stick and 4 face buttons.

This thing doesn't look convenient at all. Maybe I am wrong but it looks worse than what Sony is doing with the Dualshock for example. Does anyone think that we will see another JoyCon L or however it's called with a proper d-pad for people who don't care about multiplayer gaming on the go?

I dare say this phenomenon goes back to the N64 unfortunately

I didn't even think about the shitty Nintendo ecosystem. I can probably handle a lower powered system than a PS4 or XB1 (that space seems pointless to compete in), but the archaic mess they use for Internet functionality needs to change pronto. I should be able to sign into my account on someone else's console for Christ sake.

The pro controller has a proper D-pad. Don't worry :)

After how ugly the gamepad looked and how good that thing felt in your hands I at least give them the benefit of the doubt on the ergonomics

Force feedback with next gen on the go.

Even it could do allot more, + other addons....

Nobody is saying you have to use it as 2 controllers...

We only watched a sneak preview, wait for more
