Halo 3 had an insane water and illumination system way under utilised. They explained it in a vidoc. But since someone has already pointed that out I always though that all physics systems in Uncharted 3 were nuts. Water included:

PS3, folks.

People who aren't petty assholes who refuse to acknowledge that devs have put in years of hard work and FREE UPDATES to make their product beter.
Sorry for being an ass for not buying games that aren't finished upon release, I promise that from now onI will pre-order all the games because developers deserve my support no matter what.

Thanks for putting me in my place.

It all started with the first waterfall that you see in Uncharted Drake's Fortune. I remember I rolled around in the water and my clothes got soaked and as I did so I could see the beautiful ripples in the pond. By the end of the game you have a boss fight on a ship in the pouring rain and everything is glistening.

That same year Far Cry 2 came out and still to this day, I don't know how the dev team managed to make the reflections in the water so perfect. It seems lie it's some early form of ray tracing because it's sure as hell not screen space reflection. It even reflects every object in randomly created multiplayer maps! 2007 was an incredible time.

Then Uncharted 2 took rain to the next level when you have to rescue Jeff the Cameraman, as well as having the first very highly detailed snow in video games.

Uncharted 3' they created an entire Ocean simulation for the Cruise ship which also took place in the pouring rain. Water graphics to the max!

The Last of Us had some really great water droplet technology. When you were walking through the sky scrapers in Boston you could see the rain rolling down the window panes.

Uncharted 4 you could just free roam in an entire Ocean environment that looked stunning which also led up to what I believe to be one of the most incredible pieces of technology that Naughty Dog has eve displayed, the mission "Marooned".

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy had some incredible underground temples with dripping water as well as a very highly detailed thunderstorm that slowly rolled in over the course of about 5 minutes. It started with a light drizzle and ended in a borderline monsoon.

And finally The Last of Us: Part 2. Besides the story which could have been better, they used water in nearly every single level of the game and it was a real treat. The approach to the Aquarium as Ellie is absolutely mind blowing. One of the best things I've ever seen.

I love this stuff man. Great thread. I can't wait to see what Naughty Dog does next as they have always been the pioneer of this kind of technology.

To huff and puff like a petulant child because a game doesn't meet your expectations at launch is one thing. Dismissing it after years of updates and positive momentum, though, is basically the definition of petty.

The game has received a dozen or more updates so far. Each update pushes it a little closer to the original vision. It's one of the few examples of GaaS actually working ... and working better than expected in some ways.

Haha! Just kidding!

Only a fool would fall for such a scam! Not alabtrosMyster alabtrosMyster , a man of exquisite taste and keen intellect. You won't catch him dead playing this drivel! A pox on Sea of Thieves, I say, and anyone who dares support it.

Sorry I hurt you like that, sorry I made you so upset, deep in me I deeply regret that.

Can you tell me what game(s) I should give a chance to next time? I just want to be sure I don't cross you again, you seem pretty manly and dangerous.

Any answer other than Sea of Thieves is objectionably wrong.

Halo 3 had absolutely insane water physics though. The water didn't go through objects that were in it, it actually flowed around them, could have a current, etc. Such a shame that they dialled it right back to basically nothing in future halos.

What a dolt.
How many times do I need to beg for your pardon for having insinuated I may not think buying a broken game is a good idea? I am sorry, you da man! I give up, you are right, I'm an ass and I don't know what more to say to make you happy... Should I buy a thousand disks of that pirate game, whatever its name is? I'll do it, I want to make it up to you, the real man, the toughest person posting on this forum, maybe the toughest man of all internet! Like you got me convinced now, I can clearly see how wrong I was and I truly want to make it up to you and Rare, even maybe Phil himself while we are at it.

TBH sea of thieves water is ok. But not what ppl try to make it out to be.

This looks much more interesting interactive wise. But we'll have to see how it holds up next year I suppose.

Astrobot on PS5 fight me...a mark of a good platform to me is how much I can mess around with it and accomplish shit while still having fun. They nailed this.

Mario Sunshine had some really nice looking water in it, especially the reflections.
The Water technique in Sunshine still holds up really well to this day. Very visually appealing. It is technically not using a Reflection effect though, however it does refract.

It was indeed a scam. They completely mislead all their customers with their PR bullshit and lied about the content of the game many times over.

It launched as a scam, could be better now, I don't really care.

What did Rare lie about? Rare was pretty transparent during development and kept fans up to date during development. Everything they showed leading up to release was in the game on day one.

Announcement trailer. Everything they show here was in the game on day one. The island they show here is Cannon Cove and all the little details they show here are in the game.

Gameplay trailer from the 2017 E3, about 10 months before the game was released. Again, everything they show here was in the game on day one.

Then there was the Beta, where gamers could try the game out before buying the game. And once again, everything that was in the pre-release Beta was in the game on day one.

The steady stream of content updates started shortly after release as well, with the Athena's Fortune Pirate's Legend Lair and Athena missions. Then there was the Hungering Deep world event, which Introduced the Megalodon and story driven adventures into the game. There has been a steady stream of events and content updates ever since. So much so, that you actually have to be a hardcore SoT player to stay up with everything.

There's so much evidence dude, I'm not going to skim through it and post it all here. I don't care enough.

I always felt Wave Race 64 has and still has some of the best "feel" of the water but overall there have been some real good ones in this thread, uncharted, and Sea of Thieves come to mind. I would really, really like another "wave runner" race game though...

Not the best looking water anymore but back in the day it was. One of the first shader effect water.
Morrowind
r9800-morrowind-nobug1-2.jpg
When I first saw the water in Morrowind I remember thinking, "This is it. THIS is the pinnacle of water effects, no possible way it can get better."

Morrowind was such a magical game.

----------------------------------------------

My vote goes to Sea of Thieves, it's water/wave simulation are easily the best I've seen to date in a game. It's almost "magical" how good it looks, if they could just get the spray from waves onto ship decks, it'd be about as good as it can get.

I remember people being excited with ripple effects in Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 2 (PS2)

I certainly was blown away with how good it rippled in that game. Still annoyed they never released a PC port as it's such a fun co-op hack n' slash. At least we are getting a new Dark Alliance hopefully in 2021.

Looks lovely in motion. Really is a surprisingly beautiful game in general too

Is that definitely the actual game and not an advert, ie some CGI? If so I'm super impressed, looks brilliant for the 360.
I don't know if this Is real gameplay or not, but Rivals Is the XBOne iteration of the game, not the XB360 one, that didn't feautured Jetsky. So it's Just the firstexample of the water render tecnico that then evolved in Sea of Thieves, on the same platform
