Major Updates

New Gameplay: Challenge

"It's tough to confront the old rivals anew, but the Great Sage will always prevail!"

  • After completing the game at least once, the Destined One can find "Challenge" at any Keeper's Shrine.
  • There are two types of challenge available: "Return of Rivals" and "Gauntlet of Legends".
  • "Return of Rivals"
    • The Destined One can challenge a former opponent to a duel, choosing from three levels of difficulty.
    • If any opponents remain undefeated in the main game, the corresponding rebattle will be unavailable.
  • "Gauntlet of Legends"
    • The Destined One can battle against multiple opponents in succession, using customized curses to tailor the difficulty.
    • This mode can be difficult, as some old opponents may surprise with new moves. Proceed with caution!
    • If any opponents remain undefeated in the main game, the related gauntlet will be unavailable.
    • Completing any gauntlet rewards players with new rare treasures.
      • Medicine: "Glimmering Scale Pellets" and its formula;
      • Drink and Soaks: "Sour Wine", "Frost-Enduring Chrysanth", and "Robust Antler";
      • Curios: "Stone Tiger Tally", "Ever-Burning Palace Lantern", and "Fragment of the Ocean-Settling Pillar";
      • Equipment: "Three Hill Crown";
      • Weapons: "Qing Mallet", "Fanged Cyan Staff", and "Leeching Centipede Staff".

PS5 & PS5 Pro Support and Optimization

  • PS5 Pro now supports PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). By enabling it, you can achieve a high-definition visual experience by selecting either Quality Mode or Balanced Mode in Settings.
  • The system supports 120 Hz Output. When enabled in Balanced Mode, it maintains a stable 40 FPS output. If you encounter any visual anomalies, you can turn it off in PS5 Settings.
  • Various scenes and boss fights have been optimized for better game performance.
  • The stability of frame rates and visual clarity in both Balanced Mode and Quality Mode have been enhanced.
  • The input response speed has been improved in Performance Mode.

New Music Library Functions

  • "Black Myth: Wukong Soundtrack Selection" has been added as a new soundtrack application (some tracks are not available for export due to copyright restrictions). (PC)
  • The Music Library now supports exporting tracks (some tracks are not available for export due to copyright restrictions). (PS5)

Physical comes out next week so I'm hyped. I just tried this game on the PS trial and went to buy it right after. Super fun game.

The big news for PS5 amateur is the 120hz mode for a good 40fps. I've finished the main story, but I'll check this out.

We both read the part that says this adds PSSR to the Pro right.?

The part about turning it off is about the 120Hz mode not PSSR.

The system supports 120 Hz Output. When enabled in Balanced Mode, it maintains a stable 40 FPS output. If you encounter any visual anomalies, you can turn it off in PS5 Settings.

Anyway the game on the base PS5 already has a lot of ghosting and upscaling artifacts especially on particles effects and with motion blur on (I completely turned it off when I played it) so I'd be surprised if PSSR can do miracles here but it will be good to be able to compare the two modes.

YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Probably from AMFMF1 to AFMF2. Not supporting PSSR means they are using frame gen yet, they didn’t bother even make compatible with PSSR

This is easily the best part. If the 120hz mode is as good as it is in Rift Apart, Horizon and Forspoken then it would be at least superior to the default balance mode.

This is baffling, they need to metion the targeted fps for Pro mode.

I remember balance mode was unlocked frame rate, I would assume PSSR and extra power on Pro push it to 60, but then they said if you have 120hz display it would lock at 40, very strange.

Gaiff Gaiff help make sense, lol.

They really don't get into the weeds much, but here is what we can infer.

Performance mode on base PS5 is 1080p and capped at 60fps. It uses FSR3 frame generation to reach its 60fps target. PS5 Pro doesn't seem to change any of this. No PSSR. I assume perhaps because it cannot combine with frame generation at the moment or something else. The better GPU on the PS5 Pro will ensure a more consistent 60fps. In scenes where frame generation is disengaged such as the intro fight, the Pro will have a significant performance advantage.

Balanced mode on base PS5 is 1080p and capped at 45-48fps. It doesn't use upscaling. On the Pro, it will be capped at 40fps, which is awesome for 120Hz displays. It will also use PSSR to reconstruct from an unknown base resolution up to another unknown target resolution. The update will also cap the base PS5 at 40fps. It took them 4 months, but they finally got it right.

Quality mode on base PS5 uses DRS and seems to vary between 1224-1584fp and uses FSR to reconstruct to 4K according to DF. It's also capped at 60fps like Performance mode, but it doesn't use frame generation. On base PS5, it mostly hovers around 30-35fps. On the unpatched Pro, 35-45. The patched Pro version will use PSSR to upscale from an unknown internal resolution to a 4K output. I assume the 60fps cap will remain.

Thanks my man! I didn't know quality mode was capped at 60. Hopefully the Pro implementation will help achieve that target.

I'm just not very into 40 fps, so hopefully the the quality mode can deliver.

DF, there is gonna be work to do, lol.

Quality Mode might even be capped at 45-48fps like Balanced. The problem is it never really reaches those numbers, so I’m not sure if it’s 60. Would need to check again. Whatever the case, it’s mostly below the VRR window.

Quality mode is not capped at 45fps currently. There is one scenario where you can get into VRR window sometimes. In fact in that area Quality mode is faster than Balance mode in Pro

Edit, looking to the floor you can get 60fps in quality mode, unlike balanced mode (45fps cap)

Hopefully Game Science getting more competent with consoles.

They forgot to add from the patch changelog:

Once a satisfactory number of poor reviews left on Baldur's Gate 3 steam reviews, we will concentrate on a real pro performance patch.

This video also shows various instances where the Pro pushes fps of quality mode into the 50+ territory (and it occurs even in smaller one on one combat scenarios!). They better not cap the quality mode to 30fps in this new patch without offering an uncapped mode as well. If they have I’ll be annoyed.

The patch is now available on PS5. It’s pretty big at 24.362GB.
