I forgot just how good the final few episodes of season 4 were. No idea how they're gonna top them with the last half of season 5.

As I'm topping off season 3, I can say on a rewatch the series is quite a different beast. It certainly is far less engaging because, as MiKeD noted, tension is a major part of the show and knowing the outcome it's not as interesting. However, this allows one to focus on the other aspects of the show. Mainly the characters because holy hell they are even more impressive than before.

Every single character (well, besides Marie maybe) is so meticulously crafted and undergoes such a great, yet logical progression it's amazing. I think especially Walt, because it's obvious right from the pilot that he is a self-centered buffoon overcome by hubris. It's amazing really. He changes a lot throughout the series, but nothing seems to be random change for the sake of change, he generally is still the same character he was in the pilot. I love how at the very beginning the show's concept is summed up by a single line, "chemistry is a study of change", and 5 seasons later it still sticks to it.

I think the only episode I enjoyed on a rewatch just as much as I enjoyed it the first time is "Fly". Such an odd, genius episode. The way it's shot is brilliant too, and it's saying something when it comes to a show with such great cinematography.

It's understandable, really. At the time she didn't know they had access to basically, par devastating events, unlimited supply of events. For christ's sake, the operation cost what, 100 thousand dollars? That's a freaking lot for a family that is so cash-starved that Walt's wife who is in a very late stage of pregnancy decided to undertake a job and returned to it as soon after labor as she could.

On a rewatch it's even more mind-boggling how much Skyler is overhated.

Practically everything Skylar does is within the realm of plausibility for anyone in her position. I imagine that people sympathize with Walt and see her reactions from his perspective, which is understandable, I suppose.

Viewers don't see all the times that Skyler is sitting alone wondering if Walt is ever going to come home. She's a pretty patient gal, I'd say.

If she wasn't so condescending all the damn time she'd be more liked.

Yep. I think that ever single thing she's done in the show is very realistic for what practically anyone would do in her situation. It's just that Walt is the protagonist and people follow his logic, where just about everything she does is harmful to him. This is especially noticeable on rewatch. I actually really like Skyler's character, especially the line "Someone has to protect this family from the man who protects this family".

It's probably because Bryan Cranston is such a wonderful actor, so that's understandable. :p

If you want to imagine the show as some real-life scenario, then yes, Skylar is the most defensible and sympathetic character. However, when you realize that this is actually a television show, and that her character mainly acts as a foil to the wacky hijinks of the main characters that serve as the entire hook, it's not hard to see how she can be seen as a bit of a buzzkill, especially in the earlier seasons. Combine this with the facts that her actress is easily the weak link of the bunch, and that she is often given some truly corny lines, and it becomes clear how absolutely ridiculous the logic of some of the Skylar devotees is (i.e. if you don't like the Skylar character, you must be a real-life misogynist!)

every single woman who I know that has watched the show including my own mom instantly hated skylar haha. My mom disliked her from the first damn episode of the series.

I will never get the Skylar hate. I try but I just can't.

It's really not that hard to understand. She's not a particularly interesting character herself, and she mostly serves to antagonistically whine at the show's protagonist and most popular character. I don't hate her myself, but the hate can be justified.

Haha, same here. The whole with-us-or-against-us pro-Skylar internet defense force always struck me as some kind of bizarre overcompensation.

I don't know what it is about this show that makes its fans feel like they can sit on a high horse and judge everyone else solely based on their opinions on certain characters and events in the show. Even worse than "if you don't like Skylar you're a misogynist" is the offensively stupid "if you like Walt you're a bad person".

I'm not calling out anyone in this thread, most all of you are cool people who just like the show. But these sentiments have definitely established themselves in BB discussions all over the internet.

Remember when the Dark Knight came out in 2008? Everybody was in love with the Joker. In fact I remember almost everyone on GAF having a Joker-fied avatar for the following few months. How come nobody accused any of these people of having a warped moral compass for being so entertained by him? Both Breaking Bad and The Dark Knight are dark and violent dramas that attempt to ground themselves in reality but occasionally require a significant suspension of disbelief.

The Joker was an infinitely more twisted and sadistic villain than Walter White has been so far. How come liking the Joker made you cool and part of the group, while liking Walter White makes you a despicable sociopath?

Waat? Have you seen her acting in the episode Fifty-One? Easily one of the strongest performances of the entire shows run.

In before shut up shut up .gif

Call me ignorant, but I don't think I have seen those sentiments all that much. I mean, yeah, there are a few like that. I guess its just me not surfing other sites, but on Gaf that sentiment seems very tame here.

I've seen it most on the AV Club's comment section. If you dare to say something positive/negative about Walt/Skyler you are the worst person in the world. Just enjoying Walt's character or acting or writing makes you apparently just as bad as everything Walt's done.

Team WW until the wheels fall off. If you don't have the stomach for this go watch Psych, or cry in a circle with Pinkman.

I can't speak to the comments, but I would draw a distinction between enjoying watching a character as compelling and dramatic, and specifically defending the character's actions as justified.

Not even Vince Gilligan agrees with the latter.

Then he'll scream about how under appreciated he is and cry as he slowly sinks into a corner.  If Jesse somehow summoned the testicular power to kill Walt he'd probably off himself out of remorse.

Those are fighting words. Waly wouldn't be shit without Pinkman.

Let's be real.

Motherfucker couldn't even conjure up a thought about where to cook..."yea let's do it at your house!"
