Breaking: Xbox and Microsoft reveal global price increases for consoles, accessories — and even games

All of it is too expensive - the value of these products is lower than the monetary cost. Just let it die.
All I use my Xbox Series S for is as a Moonlight client so I can stream games from my PC to my TV.
I'm kinda done in general with these walled garden shitboxes though. Why should I pay 600 euros for a gaming console? It's getting ridiculous.

How do you install Moonlight app on Xbox Series? I am using an old APPLE TV 4k but does the xbox have less input lag?

80 dollar increase in each console, to absolutely dinamite their last mildly working market. WTG, MS

Sony has raised 50 euros only the digital console, and only in some markets. It's not even in the same league.

699$, 699€. No drive.

Fall 2029.
No, it's a joke. You see, They said "Playstation 6 2030" meaning that the console would come out in 2030. In the context of the thread, which is about console prices rising, I pretended that I thought the 2030 was a price (that's the bit you're supposed to spot and not really think I'm being serious about) and then basically said "no, they won't price it as high as that, they'll want it to be less than $2000."

I wasn't really saying that I thought the next generation of consoles would cost that much.

Sony overshipping millions of extra PS5 units to the USA before the tariffs will probably end up as one of their best moves this gen. They probably managed to delay these price increases until the fall. (which is right around the time GTAVI releases)

So basically the rest of the world taking a hit to subsidise the US because of the man-baby tariffs. There's no reason Europe should be paying more for the console just because the US want to pay double.

Wow, that's massive if they do have that much stock on hand. TBH, I still think that the tariffs will get rolled back, but maybe I've got the wrong read of the situation, versus what the administration thinks is a sensible thing to do.

Just blaming tariffs for this is incredibly short sighted. Tarrifs play a part, as they should (China needs to be challenged, Trump's doing it with a crowbar and there might be more elegant ways go go about that but he's right when it comes to China), but this is largely corporate greed, being in bondage to unsustainable, infinite growth and the shareholders and the signature MS ignorance of the reality of the market. Gaming is a luxury good, people and corporations tend to forget that, but luxury goods are the first to go if money's tight.
The industry is going to learn that very quickly.

💯

I can't believe how dense people are when we've seen this multiple times in our lifetime, as recently as within the last 5 years.

X event happening is an excuse for massive price increases (despite record revenue and record profit for most of these companies). Once X event is over, the prices don't get adjusted back down.

On the contrary, if you just want to say that home consoles costing £200-£300 is no longer viable I'd be more agreeable with you. The manufacturers are more than welcome to sell hardware for profit, and not at cost. In a market where mid range tablets go for the same price £200-£300 and might last you 2-3 years at best, or a Samsung / Apple phone cost £800-£100 and mid range phones cost £500, or a high end TV costs £700-£2k - why the hell should a PS5 Pro cost £400?

American media are always like this when it's about Xbox. It's never Xbox's issue. Xbox didn't stop releasing exclusives because Xbox failed as a console manufacturer. No...it's the industry's fault. (even though they are the only ones that stopped releasing exclusives)

When the media talks about how console sales have stalled...they never mention how that's due to their USA brand being left behind while PS5 and Switch are doing great and breaking records.

But in this instance, do you think that if Nintendo hadn't increased the prices of games and if Donald Trump hadn't slapped massive tariffs on the goods that they import that the price rises would be happening anyway?

It seems unlikely to me that Microsoft, who are generally the most consumer friendly of the console manufacturers, and also who would like a bigger market share than they currently have, would be the ones to make a move like this without external influence.

All of it could be true that Microsoft's decision is Nintendo, Trump, and Microsoft.

For example: Nintendo raises prices in consideration of economic conditions (Trump). Microsoft does the same thing, but had Nintendo abstained, Microsoft may have used their infinite money to stay their hand and absorb more damage, since their style is to pay to match the competition.

Just search for 'Moonlight UWP' in the Xbox store, it's just a normal/retail app. And it works with barely any lag, the Series consoles are great for streaming.

Correct.

Tariffs play a certain role, but are, mostly, just a very convenient excuse.

Microsoft issued IGN with the following statement as to why the price increases were taking place:

"We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development. Looking ahead, we continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen and ensuring value for Xbox players."

Your first mistake is thinking this administration is sensible. Lol. But my sentiments are the same as everyone else here. The series x hasn't been worth the $500 I paid for it, let alone the new price.

It will be interesting if we see a boost in inventory on Sony's next earnings report. It's funny too because they had just recently shifted towards reducing their inventory after having failed to sell the 25 million units they were targeting. They drastically cut back on inventory.

Just ordered a PS5 pro from Very on 10% cashback because of this....what the fuck am I doing......

Great to see you have come around (y)
Ok.

Anyway. I will be doing what I would be doing with an Xbox galaxy edition and not buying it.

I hope mine and many others message gets through to Sony because they are in a death spiral at the minute but they have so many die hard quick to jump on the grenade to protect them. Hopefully they realise that Sony clearly don't care about them and are trying to extort them.

The ps5 pro is a rip off at 700 dollars. That is a fact. The BOM of the console is not much more than a standard ps5.

Bruh, I've never seen anything this stupid in gaming. You're struggling to sell hardware and you turn around to increase the price astronomically.
Who's stupid enough to pay $429 for a 1TB Series S in 2025. Or even the 512gb version at $379?

Why buy a Series X for $599 when a PS5 Pro is $200 more? Why take the PR hit of being the first to trigger the price scaling to $80 for games? Because now, everyone will follow suit.

Last time they hiked prices up, it was to launch Redfall at $70 🙄

It's clear Spencer needs to go. He doesn't have the balls to hold his ground with Nadella. Other MS divisions have a long history of trading losses to get users. They bled money for Azure until they hit a critical mass of users and now it's a money spinner. They put over $100bn in AI and that's yet to grow a profit, but they're happy to play the long game there.

The smart move would have been to slash console prices. Eat the losses and grow the userbase until they can reset for next gen.

Clowns at Xbox, tbh.
I can understand the price of the X, but having the Series S this close to the PS5 Digital is a nonsense

The boost was already seen last quarter. Hence why those 9.5M consoles shipped out of nowhere that no one was counting on. If anything, this next quarter we will have way less consoles shipped than we expect (unless Sony kept overshipping this quarter, who knows).

Let's not forget these tariffs were part of Trump's campaign already...we just didn't know how bad they would be.

There is always going to be a boost in inventory for CYQ4. Not sure we have enough evidence to suggest that Sony had concrete plans to stockpile last quarter. Even a boost in inventory or lack thereof this quarter isn't necessarily evidence of stockpiling as we don't know where inventory is going. Though I think it's safe to assume if there is an actual boost that it's dedicated towards surging units to the US.

It's also worth noting that I think you're confusing sales with shipments here. The 9.5 million is in global sales and yes many of us were absolutely expecting it with the combination of Anniversary edition sales and the PS5 Pro.

I don't want to read too much into anything but you would think Sony would have at least repriced the Astro Bot bundle if they were going to do an aggressive shift in pricing. I think most of retail is running out of that bundle, but sony still has both SKUs on their website.

It's also possible that Sony could have stockpiled and we'll still see an increase in price, but if Sony has been smart and strategic, they should have stockpiled enough consoles and accessories that they can weather the storm without increasing prices.

I can understand the price of the X, but having the Series S this close to the PS5 Digital is a nonsense

If we try to put ourselves in Microsoft's shoes we can think a couple of things here

Either Sony does the same in line with them and at the end of the day it doesn't matter or they're being pushed out of the hardware market anyway and it doesn't make sense to eat hardware costs in the process.

Great to see you have come around (y)

in my defence. I have got a deal. Not the exact deal I wanted but very close.

PS5 Pro £689 with 10% cashback - Making it £620.10
Disk drive from £99.99 to £69.99
Gross Total £690.09 + 6.8% cashback from TCB (£46.93)

So Net total = £643.16 with disk drive. Not too bad I dont think.

Now I need to sell both my PS5s. Hopefully I can get £250 each for them.

I've seen a few people saying this now that Sony were stockpiling ps5s.
When did this happen?

By the way, they are literally telling people as it is in the statement for this announcement, but they don't want to listen:

"we continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen"

This is why I said Phil is going to come out looking like a genius. The timing of the tariffs and other influences on gaming costs could not be better for MS. I suspect that is why they are making a move now to accelerate the timeline.

Wait few more months, sony gonna rise ps5 price in response to xbox pricing so u will probably get additional 50pounds each :D

When getting your teeth kicked in you lower prices to compete better usually, especially when you're a multitrillion dollar company. At least that's what xbox fanboys kept repeating about xbox keeping Sony console prices in check with the "competition" they kept talking about throughout the gen. It was obvious to people that weren't trying to suck MS' dick that MS would screw the console market if it had less reliance on it though. I said this back in March:

This is now a clear reminder to xbox diehards that MS couldn't give a fuck about competing on price and they don't bring ANY price competition to Sony, not with that $730 Xbox Series X.

Just think back to 2020 when no one wanted to reveal their system because getting the price point right was such a big deal and now jump back to now when the XSX 2TB is more than a 2TB PS5 Pro at least for today.

That's absolutely a signal that they don't care about market share anymore.

They didn't stockpile hardware and made no moves to keep pricing down.

These tariffs will likely push Microsoft out of the hardware business faster than most of us predicted.

Damn, this is the best move that means next call of duty we wont have shitty children playing because parents cant afford it.

Microsoft has said before they consider Series X to be their pro console and now the piece matches that. Personally, I think the PS5 Pro is a better value but to each his own.

I doubt there is much appetite to keep these tariffs in place through the holidays... and certainly not in the election season next year.
