Costco no longer sells Xbox consoles and games

The stock they had on shelves probably wasn't moving, and with the latest price increase, well...let's be honest, no one shopping at Costco is about to spend $600+ for an Xbox
You're looking at this too myopically imo.

This isn't only about consoles, controllers sub cards games etc can all sell just fine (especially controllers) and take up negligible floor and warehouse space.

The issue isn't just consoles not selling or not being there, the issue is the entire SKU lineup being gone from one of the biggest retailers in the US.

Kinda sad really. Been a fan since the original Xbox. Shame that MS has allowed it to happen.
It's exactly this. They had all the resources to counter and adapt to changing markets, but disastrous leadership and awful decisions put them in this situation. No one to blame but themselves. That 2005-8 was near perfect for them. How they fumbled and fucked those last few years up of the generation blows my mind. They never recovered.

Ahh, their last real market is finally catching up to the rest of the world where Xbox isn't relevant.

Shows how loud and annoying the online minority is and how much that mob plagues social media. Your brand is dead.

America has basically kept Xbox on life support this past few years.

I regularly travel to mainland Europe and the Series consoles and games never had any visibility in shops unlike PS5 and Switch/Switch 2.

Roblox makes more money than Xbox for them. Interesting. The consoles with the price increase I understand but not selling the gift cards????

Selling off stock here in New Zealand

I'm convinced the higher-ups at Microsoft are deliberately sabotaging Xbox now to kill it faster and have the excuse to cancel it altogether without too much pushback

The best Xbox fans can hope now from this disaster are Steam machine style Windows PCs with the Xbox brand slapped on them, Xbox as it used to be is truly finished, it's just a brand now Microsoft will eventually dilute into nothing

If they're going to pull the console off the market or until stocks run out, they could at least have the decency to say so, like Sega did back in the day.

No need to announce the discontinuation of Xbox when you have "everything is an Xbox" doublethink first. They are incapable of admitting any kind of tangible defeat, just shifting priorities and goalposts. In fact, the death of Xbox is a "win" because PC is "better" and now Xbox is PC.

At what point do people start questioning whether they're actually going to move forward with that next console design, or call it off like they did for the streaming box and first party hand-held?

How poorly would the Xbox brand have to be doing for that to happen? And what's the distance between that point and where they are at right now?

They just announced a multi-year partnership with AMD for a bunch of new hardware so I don't think so.

IMO they're punting the Series consoles early like they did with the OG years ago, and they will start fresh with their new strategy. We'll see.

It's just gonna be prebuilt Windows PCs in a fancy case called Xbox. Trust in Xbox consoles is abysmally low, they'd have to be completely retarded to make another console now

Exactly what it will be. Probably cheaper for them to have partnership in a glorified pre build with the likes of ASUS, than it would be making a full blown console that won't sell.
Not like they'll make much profit from it (as most people would just build their own), but I can see them doing slightly better than they currently are even if the demand for it will be low. And it will be low.

Anyone that believes they're making a true console again is deluding themselves at this point.

"But Sarah said this, Sarah said that." She answers to higher up at MS. They'll undo any potential plans she has whenever they choose to.

They cancelled a dedicated Xbox handheld, and they'll do the same with a console.

Meanwhile, you'll still end up with a PS6, a PSP 2 (or whatever name they give it), and a Switch 3.

GAF has a really good source that says they are indeed making another Xbox console.

My local GAME (Electronics Boutique) has relegated Xbox to a couple of shelves in the side corner. Most of it is just headsets and controllers. Probably 10-15 actual game cases.

Their second biggest market country.
That's the way the Xbox section looks at most of my local Walmarts and Targets. One Target even stopped carrying the digital game vouchers you could buy. It's just a few headsets and controllers, no games or systems.

I'll believe it when I see it, Microsoft's promises and "leaks" have all been a joke the last 4-5 years and the fact that they increased the price shows how little of a fuck they give anymore. At this point they just say shit to save their reputation but each lie is a short-term fix that further ruins their reputation among gamers long-term. Like Ellis said, remember that portable they were going to release? That was a credible source too afaik

Every windows pc is a prebuilt pc with MS name on it. MS releases an Xbox branded pc and people are still only going to buy steam games through it.

Curious, my Windows 7 PC doesn't have MS name on it, but Asus.

And when I buy a game in Steam or I trade a key (probably pirate by the way, except GOG all those shops are Black Pearl crew) MS doesn't see money at all.

You basically agree with each other, because you're both trying to say a PC is just a box people will buy Steam games on whether it says Asus, Microsoft, or Xbox on it.

But they already have Asus etching, Windows sticker, and Xbox software now. They even often have an Xbox marketing gimmick like a free GP sub with the PC. You're getting deep in semantics.

Exactly.
Everyone begging for MS to release an Xbox that allows for Steam/ Epic store are arguing for MS to have a setup that doesn't benefit them at all.
The idea of a walled garden box is to funnel everyone through your own store, even for software/ games that you didn't make yourself and then collect your %30 cut.

MS is opting to get rid of the hardware/ walled garden and focus entirely on the GamePass service.
The only problem with that is GP is most popular on Xbox consoles, where users don't have the option of other store fronts.
On PC, most people still prefer Steam.

There is still a future for MS as a game publisher but they are trading short term gains for long term loss.

This sounds so familiar

I wouldn't be surprised if manufacturing had ceased by now and they're just trying to squeeze profits out of the remaining units.
Oh I have no doubt that's the case. I'm inclined to think in *this* specific instance, it really isn't much to do with tariffs because these are likely pre-existing systems that have been in US warehouses all this time. They've clearly thrown in the towel with hardware this gen, so my guess is these prices are intended to prep the market for their next-gen hybrid, which I'm guessing won't be under $1000. Also, if they bargain bin the current systems just to clear out inventory it further dilutes the 'perception' of the brand ( and they've done a great job of doing that the last few years anyway). Otherwise, they've hard pivoted to the 'this is an XBox' strategy.

Nobody of sound mind should buy the Xbox at these prices, so I'm more interested in seeing what places like Best Buy do down the line. I wouldn't be surprised if a year from now the only place you can get an Xbox is off their own online store or Amazon.

I don't think so. Latin America had kept them on life support with the Series S. I can't imagine that will continue.

Looks like Microsoft wants all their customers staring from their PCs, which is stupid given the infrastructure is not there yet.

It will probably be a bit more then that, they have to convince the suckers somehow to stick around. Same suckers already ready to lineup to get the "Xbox" rog ally x so half the jobs done.

Bullshit. I was just there and bought 2 of them. They were delicious but quite oily.

Edit. I thought they were talking about their roast chicken.

The gimmick will be that these PCs have a super duper fast, gaming version of Windows. Based on my experience with Microsoft the powershell programs that stop the dozens, if not hundreds of useless Microsoft services and programs probably make Windows faster than that this supposedly new version

We'll see, there might be a miracle and Microsoft becomes competent

That would be pure foolishness on their part imo.

The kind of presence they fostered with big retail partners around the world is a very valuable asset and destroying it right before they supposedly need it for their next-gen device is insanity.

Microsoft has made it clear that they don't care about hardware sales anymore. I suspect they will charge a premium so they can profit on each one sold, and will sell them directly through their website.

Just speculation on my part of course.

It's honestly crazy. Imagine losing when you have the "infinite money" cheat code enabled.
