With some sense of relief I'm finally in the position to quit the job I'm in to go to a company I've been trying to get into for years, able to reject the current company ideology not to mention the inane complexity of trying to accomplish my daily work while my customers generally act like over privileged assholes and attempt to circumnavigate my authority because that's how they've always done things.

Also, a 15% pay rise is neat. Good night everyone, I hope your Friday goes well!

edit!

And I got Portishead - Dummy on vinyl in the post today. Woo.

Just watched Stammer School on Channel 4. My cousin stammers something rotten, bag of feels on my head.
Yeah he's funny like that. I mean, I'm sure he feels like shit right now but his story is funny. I'll probably go out and see him in mid September, see if I can cheer him up.

Also, the band is just Shalamar. When I used the word drive I meant I was listening to a lot of them. You might not recognize the name but I'm sure everyone in the thread has probably heard these songs in their lifetime.

A Night to Remember

I Can Make You Feel Good
Well I know these guys! Never knew their name. Second new thing today.
This sounds like planets colliding!

This also sounds like planets colliding!
Mastodon are pretty badass to be fair.

Best record ever.

Well, there is also Mezzanine and Things Fall Apart and Vespertine and OK Computer and Homework and yadda yadda, but yeah, it's damn good!

Portishead's Third is better Than Dummy! Third is amazing!

Ps Mush jealous. Wagamama is amazing. Chicken ramen. Heaven.

Congrats on the job by the way 8bit, sounds like a win win win situation! Nice one buddy.

Portishead are the very definition of diminishing returns; Dummy is one of the greatest records ever made, Portishead was just pretty good, Third was kind of wut.

Also, Chinese food is pretty gross in general. Why is everything so sweet/salty? It's like the chef slipped when he was seasoning.

Good Chinese can be OK if you order/cook the right dish, but takeaway Chinese is the devil's work.

Thanks! I've been trying to get out of this one for a while but I have a very specialised skillset and it's hard to find quite the right position without considering moving.

I'm not fond of Chinese food these days, used to quite like it but having spent time away and returned it all seemed super seasoned with MSG. Last time I was out with my parents we were at a Chinese Buffet thing and I was further put off but some weird bald headed woman sticking her head in the salad trays and eating prawns & beetroot with her fingers so I've got flashbacks to that any time I'm near a buffet.

I do miss Wagamama though, there's only one over here. It's in Zürich and it's crazy expensive compared to the UK ones.

Given your predilection for things Krauty & Rocky I'm not surprised. I do like Third but not quite as much as I like Dummy. That, Maxinquaye & Blue Lines soundtracked many nights.

I dunno man, I know I'm in the minority about Chinese food, everyone else seems to love it. But to me it's like food made for old people with no taste buds left, it's like the food equivalent of drinking a glass of concentrated Ribena syrup.

And I don't think I've ever had a Chinese takeaway that didn't look like toy food in some gross, luminous gloop. The fact that the last time I went to a Chinese restaurant I was sick as a dog didn't help! Deep fried ribs that are still pink in the middle, Mmmmmmmmmm...

(Who the fuck deep fries ribs? smh)

chinese takeaway is godlike. Though I'm a fussy eater so a bit boring when it comes to ordering; just some plain chow mein, egg fried rice, bbq spare ribs, butterfly prawns and curry sauce...

man... think i'm gonna order a chinese tonight...

You are so wrong on this. Chinese take away is amazing. Granted you can get good and bad ones, same with any cuisine, you've clearly only ever eaten bad ones. Crispy shredded chilli beef, prawn toast, sweet and sour prawn balls, seaweed, special chow main mmmmmmm dammit now I'm really hungry for chinese

It sounds like you've been eating it at some proper dives. You need to find yourself a top-quality Chinese Restaurant. I'm sure Manchester has a few nifty ones.

The Scottish...? No, wait, that's Mars Bars. Is this a rhetorical question?

Chinese is so good, but you have to find what you like. I know people who only ever order sweet and sour chicken and complain every time. Just try something else!

Everyone should have Chinese for tea and post pics tonight.

Guys, it's not you it's me. I'm not a picky eater at all, I just don't like Chinese food.

But I'm not a bad person.

Indian would be my choice though, proper tasty food.
Crispy shredded chilli beef
OK, that does sound pretty tasty!

I don't really get takeaway very much, maybe I have just eaten some crap ones.

We went to Red Chilli with the olds a few weeks back, it's meant to be amazing and has had some great write ups. But that's where we had the gross deep fried ribs and generally gross food all round. The shredded duck wraps were pretty nice I guess, apart from the plum sauce that tasted like it should've been drizzled on ice cream not meat.

The Chinese sure love their sugar.
I know people who only ever order sweet and sour chicken and complain every time.
Disgusting. That's what I hate about the cuisine, it's all sugar and salt.

You're crazy. Crazy. Third is one of the best records I've ever heard. You like Machine gun, right? Right?

Machine Gun is great but Dummy has Roads so wins by default.

Git outta here!

Have you (or anyone) heard Geoff Barrow's band Beak? They're great too.

Edit edit

Ps vita people don't sleep on Counterspy. I've only played it for a bit but it seems perfect on there. Just like damn rogue legacy which I am STILL playing for hours at a time.

My old school friend is in the band with him, I believe. Only put two and two together fairly recently.

Yeah, got the first one, but seem to have missed the second for some reason.

I quite like CounterSpy, but getting the Defcon counter down is frustrating.

At the end of the day, both Dummy and Third come from very different places. Dummy is this organic, smoky little album that's in love with John Barry. It remains pretty emotionally constant throughout which makes it a great album for the ol' up and down or a good smoke. I mean, I like them both a lot, but I think I prefer Third because it's got a much dirtier, more urgent, motoric/krautrock aspect to it. It has much more dramatic (without being melodramatic) shifts to it too, so it doesn't blend into the background like Dummy can, especially the middle three songs.

Also, I put Threads (I think it's that one) up there with Roads. Dat elephant call trumpet thing at the end tickles my brain.

Funny that no one talks about the second album. All Mine is the shit.

Yup. Saw them at the ATP Portishead curated at Ally Pally.

For some reason I keep thinking Only You & All Mine are on Dummy.

My band Parachute for Gordo made a video - http://youtu.be/3kZT8IH99ro

we are also on tour on the following dates:
07 Sept - Brighton, Sticky Mike's
08 Sept - Brixton, The Windmill
09 Sept - Guildford, Boileroom
10 Sept - Basingstoke, Sanctuary
11 Sept - Bristol, The Thunderbolt

Come out and see me BGAF!!

I was umming and ahhing, since it's a school night and I should be revising, but I just looked on this website and apparently the entry is **free**, so I might have to come. Also, someone repeatedly misspells the band "Parachute For Godo", which makes you sound like a sequel (or prequel?) to that one Samuel Beckett play.

Portishead peeps all up in here, jolly good show! Nice description of their changing sound over the records Meat, I found myself nodding in agreement. And yes sploat, Machine Gun is boss, but that kind of goes without saying, just not a fan of the record in general.

My favourite track from "Portishead" is Undenied though. It's so beautifully sombre and melancholic, even by their standards:

Portishead - Undenied
The way the drums crash in after the gentle piano on the intro tweaks my nipple.

And as a counterpoint to all this mopey trip-hop, they do smile sometimes. Maybe my favourite track of theirs, and definitely my favourite from Dummy:

Portishead - It Could Be Sweet
"But the thoughts we try to deny,
Take a toll upon our lives,
We struggle on in depths of pride,
Tangled up in single minds,

Cos I don't wanna lose,
What we had last time your leaving,
This life ain't fair,
You don't get something for nothing, turn back,
Mmmm gotta try a little harder,

It could be sweet"

The way she exhales gently into the microphone after that final line is gorgeous.
Indian Food >>>>> Chinese Food
Even the yank agrees.

One of the floor staff who left last week was DJing at Mint last night. When he was sound checking before we opened he played this, I thought it was ace so asked him who it was.

"It's me mate! It's from my EP that's due out."

Well shit:

Dan Wainwright feat Androit Delacroix - Doing It

Got a bit of a Primal Scream/Death In Vegas groove going on, I think it's awesome! Fair play that man, he got some skills.

That's pretty tasty, man. Got a nice laid back Alabama 3 vibe going on.

I ended up listening to a lot of the music on his page via auto play, really great stuff. Thanks for sharing.
