Bungie speaks out on Destiny review delay.

I'm a little perplexed at why this game is such a powerhouse. I don't think it is a bad game. I'm perfectly fine with people really loving this game but I'm not understanding it. I loved old school halo and want to trust bungie but this game is nothing like halo aside from the first person perspective. So I will wait till its out a bit and see if it actually has the legs it says it has.

In a world where Skyrim was super popular with both critics and fans, I'm not surprised at all.

Some of you might wait to pick up a copy until you read the final verdict from your most trusted review house. We’re okay with that.
I like that the devs say this, while the marketing department says BUY NOW DAY 1 LAUNCH HYPE IT'S AN EVENT NOT A PRODUCT LAUNCH BE PART OF IT

But I suppose this is the nature of the beast.

From the Bungie community blog.

So, no reviews because the game couldn't be "fully populated" before release.

Personally, while I think it's irritating (unanswered questions like the amount of content in the base game don't need a massive player base to be assesed.) - ultimately it's Bungie's call on how they want their game to be judged. The fact they're at least addressing the frustration gives me more faith than most embargos.

Considering the controversy earlier this week from the lack of pre-release reviews, figured this was thread worthy.
Well if I have to choose between trusting Bungie or kotaku, I'll choose Bungie.

Like Halo or not, but this action of Bungie is pathetic. A clear indicator that this game will be much worse than many think.

Did you even read the op? I dont understand why people want this game to be bad. Is it because people PLAYED THE GAME AND LIKED IT? Many people PLAYED THE GAME AND LIKED IT and it sounds like they want the same user based reviews/hype that the alpha and beta brought

At this point the reviews mean very little to me. I played the alpha and beta, I got a good idea of what the game was, had a lot of fun and felt confident enough to pre-order.

Yea but the speed of light is 186,000 miles per second.

The trip should have only taken 2 seconds - not even.

The load screen took almost a full minute.

They should have been out to Pluto by time that screen finished loading.

;)
Time spent accelerating and braking, and who said they went in straight line? That sort of speed, maybe you want to take a spin round the block?

You shouldn't need a review for a title that had a playable beta. You get a taste of what you get and then you go off of brand and legacy of the developer to ensure you are not going off of bugged software alone.

The game will be good. Buy it.

Well, there's the possibility that the game is lacking in content (because they want you to buy the expansions) and that they didn't want to give the reviewers the chance to discover this ahead of release.

But do you trust Activision? For all the good that Bungie can do, Activision has a long track record of anti-consumer moves - and when it comes to decisions like pre-release reviews, you know they've got a lot of control. Blind trust just sets consumers up to be swindled.

If you play WoW, and you join the world, and there is no one populating it, your opinion of the game will likely be that that world is dry (on that server), and not alive, despite everything else that can be done.

Bungie has branded this an MMO, from the start, and that's what they're rollin' with. If I started this game, and no one was populating the world, I think that would be on my mind, more than anything else regarding the gunplay, etc. (since I played the beta, and enjoyed it all.)

Personally, the only time I even played this game solo was when I first booted the beta up. I can see their logic.

After playing the beta I just want to know about the content, not so much player interactions, which are kind of subjective. however, since it is not an MMO, a large user base isn't necessarily required to get the full effect.. right?

either way, I find out at midnight, and will read up all about it tomorrow. i don't mind missing out on pre-order content, if it is good, I'll fork up the cash.

It'll be fun if their servers can't handle it and the game receives a bunch of 1's. It won't mean a damn thing, but it will be fun.

The beta was on summer. I bet many people like me where on a holiday trip during the beta.

So those guys weren't able to play it, reviews are nice. Thanks.

No faith. I'll wait for impressions on the amount of content, and then I'm going to rent it.

Seems fair enough to me. Who would trust a day-one MMORPG review anyway?

If you just want to learn what the game is about, there's no shortage of footage and impressions online already.

I mean, sure, but did anyone read the blog post aloud? The language is cringe-worthy.

Because its not an mmo. Its a co-op shooter that has players phase in sometimes. 10 people on a map sure isn't massive. Neither is 4 zones. Theres no reason for a review delay other than fears of low scores.

An MMO requires a massive player base to properly assess its worth?

you don't say
It shocked me how many people didn't jump to this very logical answer regarding population when the review copy issue was revealed.

Like all these people saying it was a conspiracy to hide their lack of confidence and content. Seriously?

And don't even say it's not an MMO because we know it still needs a pool of lots of players to populate readily at all times like one

Makes more sense than most reasons. Still waiting for reviews. Not super confident in it after the beta and content comments.

Do you really think they have any fear of low scores? This is a massive budget Activision-published and Bungie-developed triple A first-person shooter. It's going to be graded on a 8-10 scale outside of a few outliers.

Also, it may not be a traditional MMO, but I think it qualifies just fine. It's certainly not much worse than any other heavily instanced MMORPG like Star Trek or Guild Wars 2 and such.

I'm sure it's about as much of an MMO as Diablo 3 was.

Did everyone here forget what mmo stands for? Massive multiplayer online. Its multiplayer and online sure, but four zones that occasionally populate with 10 people or so os hardly massive. Massive is reserved for Eve or Wow or what have you. Yknow, hundreds? Thousands? Tens of thousands of players?

Well I think this is how all games with a major online component should be reviewed. A review based on a handful of reviewers playing togther isnt really a good basis for a review.

I get the feeling that it's because people played the beta and liked it.
Sure. I played it and left a little baffled at why exactly people were raving about it. I liked it but only enough to possibly buy it because nothing else is coming out for a while that interests me.

I think so too. But I still think it'll be a fun experience for 8-10 hours. I think the biggest thing Destiny has going against it is people's expectations.

Yeah the Gamespot stream has been going on for around 10 hours and they're on Mars right now, I think that's the last planet or second last. They're about level 14? atm.

ed: Mars is the last planet.

I agree with what you're saying, but it no longer reflects the reality, sadly.

The term is used for anything that's persistently online, has social hubs, loot, and group-only content. Oh, and a dance animation.

People are largely saying the content is the same as the beta. I personally don't want to babysit my ghost or fill up % bars for 8-10 hours :(

My gut is still telling me that this game is going to be much lighter on content than we expect.

I'm expecting a lot of "now do it with harder enemies" type stuff like the beta.

That isn't enough to keep me interested so I think I'll wait for some opinions.

Actually they did all they could to avoid branding it an MMO. Before the alpha was released, their messaging was so confusing a lot of people had no idea what the game was meant to be.

Hey, you're right, and quick few googles of "destiny mmo" shows some articles where they state that they don't want to classify it as one.

I dunno where I got that from, though. Perhaps it's because I have only read things about Destiny from here, and only after the beta started. Personally, I compare this to WoW, because that's the way it felt right from the start, for me. The Moon Tower (awesome dazed and confused reference :P) is Orgrimmar. The dancing, the raiding, and strikes. The multiplayer isnt called "multiplayer" like in COD, it's called PVP, like WoW.

I know things like different character builds, and different looking gear/stats, or even the term "pvp" aren't mutually exclusive to mmo, but my first experience with these was WoW, and I ended up playing the game for 5+ years, so I kinda see a lot of things that appear in other games as being "WoW", and by association, "MMO"

If they're so assured of 9s & 10s, why bother stopping prerelease reviews? I want to believe Bungie thinks the only way to experience Destiny is with the whole world playing alongside you. But the content we've seen doesn't signify that sort of experience. At all. Plus, Activision is going to have the final say on the experience of reviewers.

My logical conclusion is that Activision doesn't think the game is a 9/10.
