i kinda guffawed at the idea that this meant there was some stench of the Russia / Trump problem on him but the comment about how he might not even finish out his term has me like HMMMMMMM

I'm leaning towards diddling an office member or child porn or something of a sexual scandal. That is, if it's not a payday. If it's Russian related one would expect more than just Chavetz moving quickly no?

She's like 50% journalist and 50% conspiracy theorist, and for the past couple months has been ...well, first to mumble about this stuff on twitter, then it comes out that it's real.

So her following is increasing. It all sounds like a conspiracy theory, but then, we're talking about an actual conspiracy with global implications.

The one thing that's been increasing her credibility is that she wrote about the FISA warrants on Trump associates all the way back in November, but it was on Heat Street so people disregarded it pretty quickly. Then the BBC picked up on it in January and now everyone else is going "....oh she was right the entire time."

She can still be nutty but she hasn't been categorically wrong about most of this stuff to this point.

I'm leaning toward that, embezzlement of epic proportions or treason.

Maybe he was called in to talk with the Mormon First Presidency because of all the negative attention that he was getting in the press.

I can see them telling him to get out to avoid having to continue interfering with the Trump/Russia investigation.

Its got to be more than just a simple affair. For one, he wouldn't talk about wanting to spend more time with his family, and two, I don't think he would resign over it. If he was just having an affair he'd talk about how much he'd pray for forgiveness, ask God to give him strength, yadda yadda yadda, and but ultimately continue to put party first.

No way, he is LDS an affair for a temple going LDS guy is excommunication status.

I know people don't put too much faith in Louise Mensch but I mean, she said this a week ago before Chaffetz's announcement::

Louise Mensch has made a career peddling unsubstantiated fanfic for various, desperate audiences. Before her anti-Trump stuff, she was spinning Gamergate conspiracies. Even Mr. Fantastic couldn't hold her stuff at the arm's length required.

There doesn't have to be anything directly Russia related for Chafettz to gtfo. His job is to investigate the President. Even without the Russia stuff, there is a mountain of emoluments violations, ethics fuckery, and shady business deals for him to sift through. There are simply too many cases for him to dodge. Once he decided that he didn't want to be the Republican who was forced to deal with Trump's shit, leaving was his best option.

If he isn't going to run for re-election, there's really no reason for him to stick around. The decision has already crossed Ryan and GOP leadership, so they would make his life hard for the rest of his term anyway. Better to leave now and lay low for a bit. Politics loves a good comeback story and he's still young enough to have a few left in him.

I think he realized his job wasn't being an obstructionist but to actually govern and like every other republican they have no idea what they are doing and would rather quit what turns out is an actual job.

Yep it is far easier to play spy hunter than internal affairs.

I'm going to stick to him being real shook by getting yelled at by his own constituents.

Anything beyond that as the reason for him resigning is going to be a massive, massive, massive bonus. hnnng.

also i just find it hard to believe that Chipmunk Man Jason Chaffetz could have a side piece

Probably the same way the governor of Alabama managed to get a side piece (if it turns out true)... they would do it for favors which is a whole other can of worms.

Around 30 minutes ago this was tweeted by Chaffetz's account. Innocuous most days. Maybe not so much today?

How anti-gay has Chaffetz been in his career? The more vocal he has been about it, the more likely you are to be right.

He's a member of a very anti gay church (Mormon). He would get church discipline for infidelity but homosexual relations would be excommunication almost guaranteed

He would get excommunicated for infidelity. Those who have been married in the temple and cheat on their spouses are shown the way out. Infidelity with a man or a woman is the same sin: sex outside of marriage. If he hadn't been married in the temple, then just discipline would be in order, yes.

Hopefully it's not infidelity. However much he might be disliked, his family doesn't deserve that.

I don't think it's so clear cut with a hetero affair, probably depends on the nature of the affair, what was done and how many times and for how long and high councils have some latitude. But if it's a dude? All but guaranteed.

Note this is coming from talking to my dad who was a high councilor for many years

Everything is personalized, yes, but I would be shocked if he wasn't excommunicated for any sort of sexual activity outside of marriage given that he's been married in the temple. I obviously can't say 100% either way though. In recent years it's been more likely to see someone excommunicated than not be, however.
