This is a shit show. Rajoy could have learned lessons from Scotland (let them vote and lose), but instead he's gonna make it hard not to have an ugly divorce which is gonna hurt a lot of people. What an idiot.

The Referendum isn't valid as it is right now, but the response of the spanish gov is absolutely embarrassing.

I'll try to go and vote later, even if it is not valid it's a way to express ourselves and nobody can take that away from us.

Have the Catalonian leadership been pushing the same lie that the SNP were pushing during the Scottish referendum that it would be possible to retain EU membership after going independent during the campaign leading up to this?

Rajoy should have treated this as the new 9-N. Catalonia has no way of grabbing independence by force and even if they were to declare it unilaterally they would have no way to exert it. Instead, now people will focus on the actions of the Guardia Civil instead of the fact that the Generalitat has just amended the rules for voting 45 mins prior to the start of the voting. This referendum is a complete farce

Balaclava donned muscle making off with ballot boxes. That's a mighty fine image you're projecting there, Spain.

How come Catalonia isn't allowed to become its own country? If that's what the people want, they have every right to break free.

I don't think it's that simple. Imagine any US state wanting to secede. Think everyone else would just watch and nod approvingly?

They would be allowed to if they did it the right way, and not through the dick measuring contest this referendum is.

We need a new thread. This one doesn't even begins to describe the absolute shitshow that is Catalonia today.

Paramilitary police beating peaceful voters, what the fuck.

Because this illegal referendum isn't the way to do it.

Those who manage to vote can put several ballots at once. There is no census. They just take note of the National ID.

It's a fucking joke.

BTW, separatists are using kids and elders in some schools as human shield to prevent Police from doing their job.

Involving underages in this mess is disgusting. They've used them for their propaganda shit.

Worst thing is that yesterday in Madrid a group of fucktards in a pro-Spain rally were singing, also with kids, 'Cara al Sol', the Franquist Anthem, which has given even more reasons for those who want separte from Spain to jump into this train.

Is this kind of police response really necessary? They all know the referendum isn't legally binding, so why go through all this trouble to try and prevent it? If anything, Catalans are going to be more and more pro-secession, even if they maybe weren't before.

They've been told the constitution prohibits it.

The "right" way is to convince a hostile foreign nation to effect a constitutional change for their benefit against that nation's express stated intent.

Exactly what I was thinking. They should've just let people do their thing but no, now all newspapers will be filled with grandma's bleeding from their foreheads and the whole international community will be against the Spanish governments no matter the obvious blame from both sides to this situation.

Isn't it because they said they'd declare independence if they won, and because of the nature of these illegal referendums, they're sure to win?
Illegal or not, simply proclaiming independence can get messy as hell.

Nation which they are a part of.
Let's keep the hyperbole in check.

At least that particular cop is a professional and is acting with proportionality considering what that lady was doing. What a shitty situation those forces have been put in.

"proportionality"

Because being old gives you the right of assaulting authority.

An old woman resisting being pulled agaisnt a fully armored cop is a weird definition of "assault"

Because our government is ruled by idiots.

Im getting sick hearing justifications for the police beating old people.

"but they are being manipulated, being used as human shields!"

Really? Is that where your train of thought has decided to stop? Not at an incompetent government which only decision regarding the referendum has been to send a fucking armada of police and paramilitary?

Why the fuck do we have more police at schools in one day than when investigating Gurtel and Punica? Sick fucks.

Puigdemont is kind of an asshole, they should call this off, try to calm people and semd them home before things get uglier.

Any recent examples to the contrary? I mean the UK is a crappy institution but it at least has it right when it comes to self determination over the last half century.

Diego Garcia.

Backing Unionist with state sponsored violence in Northern Ireland.

No, it doesn't have it right at all.

Maybe it's because the voters aren't being peaceful? Tune into spanish TV, there are actual riots. It's not like everyone is being violent, but it's also not like all police are charging into people.

Tuning into Spanish tv was your first mistake. Im not asking you to watch TV3, but check international media outlets and you'll see how "violent" people are voting.

Rajoy needs to go (he wont)

Because our government is ruled by idiots.

Tell that to people living in absolute shitholes like Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, hell even Venezuela. I find such protests and outcry for seperation in high welfare and wellbeing first World countries extremely embarrassing to be honest.

1- It's impossible to do a legal referendum and you know it, the spanish gov is playing with marked cards. This ref is more of a protest than anything.

2- There is a census and it shouldn't be possible to vote twice because there is a database and it should be checked each time. Now, being things as they are, there are absolutely no guarantees this thing will work properly. Again, this has become a protest more than a valid ref.

3- Why not bring kids to a vote? Since the dawn of democracy parents go with their children to vote to participate in the events, why not today? They haven't been using kids as human shields, there is an out of context picture making the rounds, as the pictures of elderly people hurt, which we don't know if they were hurt due to police action or because they fell due to the huge amount of people pushing.

4- Police as of right now are not being violent in general, there is no need to panic.

5- Yeah, the fascists morons from yesterday don't help

People is calmed, I was in one of the colleges, people were pacefully resisting.

I didnt mean it as in they are being violent, more as in the fact that the people out there really want it, so try to get their excitement down a notch and send them home.

I have news for you: you can have an incompetent government in one side and use humans shields in the other. They're not incompatible.

You missed my point completely.

A competent government would have prevented this. Since when parents do not bring children to vote (at a school, of all dangerous places)

Human shield would have been to bring your children to a demonstration against the police, which clearly is not the case.

I voted No in Scottish independence referendum. Caused a lot of division but at least people got a chance to vote for the future of their country.

This is a sh"t show. I understand they don't have it in their constitution but they should have just let it happen. It is illegal so will hold no baring on anything... You never know it may have given a no vote as well

TV3?

Come on now

As I said, international news outlet. Telecinco has a terrible track with things like this and so far is the only news site reporting it.

Im not surprised on them focusing on this and not on the police attacks, though.

Oh, and guess what is tVE reporting? A documentary from 2 years ago.
