State of the market

Projected U.S. spending on video game hardware, content and accessories reached $4.8B in July 2024, gaining 10% when compared to a year ago. 2024 year-to-date spending is now 2% higher than a year ago, at $32.1B.

wcNhrfe.png

Hardware
July video game hardware spending grew 12% when compared to a year ago, to $326 million. Growth in spending on PlayStation 5 (+25% vs YA) and Xbox Series (+48%) hardware was partially offset by a 44% drop in spending on Switch.

771k total units of video game Console hardware (excluding PC Portables) sold in July, up from 695k a year ago.

PlayStation 5 led the month’s hardware market in unit and dollar sales, with Xbox Series ranking 2nd across both measures. July 2024 is the first month with year-on-year growth in video game hardware spending since the 2% increase seen during December 2023.

Software
Launch month dollar sales of EA Sports College Football 25 more than tripled the total lifetime dollar sales of the previous best-selling college football game, NCAA Football 07.

Mobile
Sensor Tower: Top 10 mobile games by U.S. consumer spend in July and rank change vs June: MONOPOLY GO!, Roblox (+1), Royal Match (-1), Candy Crush Saga, Pokémon GO (+5), Last War: Survival (-1), Whiteout Survival (-1), Coin Master (-1), Township, and Brawl Stars (-2).

“For July 2024, we no longer see double digit growth comparing year over year, but we do still see a solid 7.6%,” said Samuel Aune of Sensor Tower. “The winning genres this month were Simulation and Shooters."

"The breakout games for Simulation were Township, Roblox, and Minecraft, which increased US consumer spend 38% month over month. Minecraft continues to be the highest grossing mobile paid game in the world over a decade after its launch," said Aune. Aune continued… "For Shooters, Free Fire Garena, PUBG MOBILE, and GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE all saw 50%+ increases in US consumer spend growth month over month, while Call of Duty: Mobile grew US consumer spend 32% month over month.”

Accessories
Consumer spending on Accessories grew 4% in July when compared to a year ago, to $184M. Leading the year-on-year spending gains for Accessories were the Remote Play Device segment (PlayStation Portal), and Gamepads (+6% versus a year ago).

The PlayStation Portal was the best-selling accessory in dollar sales for both July and 2024 year-to-date. In units, the best-selling accessory of both July and 2024 year-to-date was the PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller Midnight Black.

If EA move all their sports games to current gen it would really help out the current gen console sales.

But they will probably release fifa on ps4 through out the entire ps5 gen or atleast close to the end of it.

This kind of struck me as a perfect game for EA to dip their toe in the water for Switch football. I guess they don't need more money.
It's a current gen only release (XBS and PS5, but no PC). That said, maybe they'll be doing a CF release on Switch 2 when it hits the market. 🤷

last ps30 fifa was 2019 in 2018, definitely will last most of the gen (let's face it has probably already lasted half of it), last ps2 FIFA 2014, it happened before

Crazy that Helldivers was the best selling game of the year and was eclipsed in one month or rather in half a month.

I am curious to see how Black Myth and Star Wars duke it out next month. Black Myth seems to be a mostly chinese success and star wars outlaws has become super hated on twitter, youtube and message boards after a phenomenal reveal last year.

Would be a great handheld game. No Switch. No PC.

EA being EA.

Awkward John Krasinski GIF by Saturday Night Live
It is weird how EA screw over PC with their sports games regularly. Like they used to have the ps3/360 versions of Fifa on PC instead of the PS4/XBO versions.

Fifa 22 on PC was also the previous console gen version of the game.

It kinda is, but at the same time it isn't, since these are revenue based charts and CF costs $70 while HD2 is priced at $40. I expect NBA 2k25, EA FC 25, CoD Black Ops 6 and AC Shadows to overtake HD2 as well this year.

Ah. Been waiting for the PS Portal sales update thread.

I think football fans just wanted something - anything - different.

Perhaps for some, but here in the southeastern US where college football rules all it has been sorely missed for many a fan.

Yeah that too. People wanted something different from the yearly "Here's a new Madden with a new coat of paint" and, like you said, College Football is massive.

Will be interesting to see how all this changes as more outside money is funneled into the NCAA over the next few years. Safe to say it's here to stay.

For the first time in years, Xbox performed like a current-gen system in the sales market. Guess the College Football boost was real after all.

I'm not completely informed on the whole CF stuff; is this EA's attempt to replace Madden with a different branding?

Star Wars is probably going to bomb. In addition to the stuff you mentioned, it's not like the IP is in a great space mindshare-wise ATM. The Acolyte was a complete failure and it's now cancelled. While Andor is great, few have watched it. The last Star Wars film was seen as a disappointment.

The IP's mindshare is just very bad right now, even among mainstream audiences, and that might have a negative impact on SW Outlaws.

Madden simulates professional football (NFL). College Football simulates college football. My guess is they'll probably live side by side, my hope is that they alternate years. But EA being EA, they're going to milk their new cash cow dry.

To get a sense of the popularity of college football, check out the first minute of this

Looks like College Football has been doing some heavy carry for both HW and SW in July.
It is an IP with many followers, highly anticipated in the USA and only launched on XSeries and PS5 (no crossgen). That will always have an impact on sales. Plus it seems like it's a very good football game, even better than the Madden series. People with PS4/XBO and people with PC only had one option to play it.

It is further proof (and there is already a lot) that the union of software + marketing + quality drives hardware sales regardless of whether it is exclusive or not.
I imagine that with GTA VI we will see something similar multiplied x2000 😂

PS. The PS5 and Xbox sales list and the "most played" list are once again a carbon copy as well.

People doubted Mat when he said College Football was increasing hardware sales, but he was 100% correct.

nintendo better have some real razzle-dazzle planned for the fall if they want to hit that 13 million, cause these numbers won't reach it
It needs a price cut and heavy bundling.
GTA 5 DIDN'T CHART

GTA 6 INBOUND
It basically never charts since Take 2 told Circana not to include digital anymore.

Piscatella is closing down his Twitter account, but he'll still be sharing sales news on his LinkedIn and other socials.

That said, I'm replacing the screenshots in my OP since they link to his twitter account which he'll close, SMH.

That is really for the best. He needs to get back to just presenting the information that Circana wants him to present and stop interacting with people on twitter. He doesn't have the thick skin needed for that.

If Xbox keeps selling this well, there's not stopping this bitch! You can't stop this Cole Train for real! And wait until PS5 owners find out that they can play Indiana Jones on Xbox first!!!
Indiana? Come on, that's just "Dude Raider!" What a copycat ripoff!
