CIVILIZATION VI |OT| He's Got the Whole World in His Hands

I know the game just released, but are there any good videos for players mostly new to Civ games? I have like 10 hours in Civ 5.

It has all but one of the major game play systems from Brave New World, and introduces a couple besides. So in terms of core game play it should be comparable. Obviously it lacks the tons of great mods and doesn't yet have as many Civs as 5, but I think the general consensus is that the core game can compete with where vanilla 5 with expansions is now.
Which system is missing? Espionage, religion, trade routes?

FilthyRobot is putting together some new player videos on his channel that are very good. He's a top tier kind of player but also voices his decision making really well. There are only three up for now but they cover a lot of the core game play decisions.

Barbarians and combat - https://youtu.be/dj5tWp_bdGw
Early game decisions and strategy - https://youtu.be/rqcMxlYEuRI
City management and growth - https://youtu.be/33CWv7A6Zng

Sorry for shitty mobile links, still trying to at least appear like I'm working today.

Wow im stupid. Just realized that I have to click the right arrow om the envoy screen to make envoys ACTUALLY deploy to those city states. I thought it automatically did this for some reason. Im on turn 99 and had 6 envoys just sitting there.

Getting a cool perk from hong kong right now.

Thinking about getting this. Is it a huge improvement over Civ V (with all expansions)? I still play that every now and then, but if this game is a lot better I'll definitely switch to this.

They removed the world congress and replaced the diplomatic victory with a religious victory. It will apparently be making a return in the future, they just weren't happy with the system as it stood. Everything else is still in the game with varying degrees of changes.

Kind of surprised you thought it would work. The card is far below the min spec, and I had that card back when it came out in 2008

Seriously, you can get a newer card that will run Civ for less than £20 - shit I'm even selling a GTX 560 right now if you are in the UK for £30
Well, I think it's more I need to change all the pc, x3 phenom 720. It was running Stellaris so I wanted to try.

Every time the main menu loads, urge to assert international dominance rises.

I take it auld Gandhi is still nuke happy in VI? He's just north of Pedro in my first game and he's doing the classic "I'm your fwiend" strategy that normally disappeared when he enters the nuclear era in previous entries. Percussions have been taken, i just need to pull the trigger on him

So eventually China declared war but the AI is kinda stupid on Prince, he just circled my city with countless units instead of attacking making my only defending archer unit insanely leveled up.

After defeating about 10 units he decided to make peace so I said yeah I'll take the gold and spices and chocolate and I'll attack him afterwards. But it seems I can't attack and also can't declare war or enter his borders. Tell me it's a bug and not a feature.

Isn't that just the period of mandatory peace after a war is ended?

Dunno this is my first Civ that I get into. But surely it must have a backstaber feature somehow.

If you want to attack right away, you need to end the war without any terms on both sides. Otherwise you have to wait before attacking again. That's how it used to work, anyway.

The tutorial is made with new players in mind, so definitely play through that first.
Is the tutorial REALLY good at explaining everything? Because i didn't know what the fuck i was doing in Civ V and i have always wanted to get into the Civ series but they always seem so intimidating

It's very good at explaining the basics so you can get started on your first game - for advanced mechanics and strategies you need to consult the civilopedia and strategy guides/videos, respectively. But yeah it'll give you the tools you need to at least be able to play on the lower difficulties.

So what time was it when you finally resisted Just One More Turn? 😉
You know, I actually showed pretty surprising restraint. Only played for 3 hours. But it was definitely hard to put it down.

I hear ppl on the turn lengths. But at least it doesn't impact the performance when it is calculating turns. I can still move around and check out the map while it's thinking.

All the new systems come together beautifully. I feel like I have a goal every turn, instead of just mashing enter half the time. Can't wait to get home and get back after it. Game is fantastic so far.

Well that just sucks. And I can't find where does it show the remaining turns till war time. All my troops are outside his borders like LET'S GOOOO JUST GIVE THE WORD!

This tutorial is very different to every other Civ game. It hand holds you through every single step and move to teach you, and even stops to tell you the mechanics and how they work for almost everything.

I'm a vet at the game yet thought I'd do it to learn what's new - it's definitely geared at serving the most new of the new to the game and gradually builds up your knowledge through the game.

DO IT!

I'm so bad! I can't mentally pull out of a turtle/improvement mentality regarding my cities to field an army so I end up getting crushed by barbarians and other civs.

Wow.

Did civ 5 had preview streams on twitch, yt etc? I guess they helped a lot.

Peak time for concurrent players is in about 2hrs - - but the proper peak for the game should be seen on Sunday at around the same time. Regardless, it's clearly a successful launch for them, assuming over the next weeks and months, the game remains heavily played / in the top of the chart as Civ V has been

Seems like the game and I have a different definition of continents. Across the river is not being on another continent wtf

Maybe that's why Roosevelt kept trying to kill me.

Does the game keep crashing for anyone else? Had it crash when I clicked the cross in the policy menu and when I finished a wonder. Really annoying; screen just freezes..

Firaxis need a spell checker.

In the tutorial Captial is spelt "Capitol" - which doesn't make sense for the context anyway when they then use "Capital" afterwards. Quite a few little errors like that around

Another question - There doesnt seem to be any culture / science / happiness penalty for new cities. Anyone confirm if there is any negative for building a new city?

Played for a half hour-ish last night, but I started on normal difficulty and have about 4-6 barbarian units circling my city already. Killed two but they eventually kinda just swarmed my units. (Only had a slinger, that I had to buy, and starting warrior)

Lan Dong Mik

And why would I want them?
Fuuuuuck the hype is getting to me bros. I need to leave this thread, but I can't. I've bought Gears, Battlefield and Shadow Warrior 2 already!! Must resis....ah fuck it I'm buying this too.

It doesn't seem so. However, the cost of settlers/builders/districts go up each time you build one.

Production costs for settlers, builders and districts scale, so it's more that you need more and more hammers to generate new cities, and then those cities take way longer to come online as district costs increase.

You're also somewhat limited by luxury resources. Each copy you have hooked up provides 1 amenity to only 4 cities. So if you throw down a bunch of new cities without the luxuries available to provide happiness they will start to suffer penalties to growth and yields as their population grows.

The tutorial is telling me to choose either warrior or settler and use the escort button, but I can't find any escort button and all buttons on the unit screen are greyed out.

I don't think anyone could call it a huge improvement, but to be fair that's largely because Civ V is such a great game.

From what I've played so far, there's just about enough new things in Civ 6 to consider it a worthwhile upgrade provided you're a fan of the series. The city management with districts is a nice addition, and being able to link combat units with support units or civilian units is useful, but nothing is game changing. If you think of it as a Civ V expansion that adds city districts and alters the art style (I was hoping they'd go for realism again, but they definitely nailed the cartoon look at least) you're in the right mind set. If that seems worth the price of admission (I found it for £36.99) then go for it. It's a great game, and I'm sure they'll continue to build on it over the next two years. If not, wait for a sale and buy it then.

If you like Civ V you'll almost certainly like this game too. It's a just a question of value.

Played a few hours and man...I am fucking loving this version of Civ. So damn good.

Barbarians are pissing me off though. I'm not great at Civ so they're just completely stalling my plans in the games I've played. I've had to restart a couple games because they're such a nuisance.

They are only a problem for the first few turns, at least in my experience. Just build or buy a few slingers/warriors, attack their closest camp and they won't bother you that much.

Played a few hours last night, but I intended to only play ~30 minutes. The "one more turn" feeling is something serious, even compared to past Civ's.

The UI scale isn't working? With a 34" 21:9 monitor, I have to lean from one side of my chair to the other just to see the text in the left/right panels. However, the performance is really smooth with 4790K/GeForce 1080. Well over 60 fps constant.

Loading up the game towards the main menu is much faster than in V. Now I gotta found out how to get 4K DSR Nvidia working in full screen. Only works in windowed.

There should be a button that looks like a chain link above the unit portrait

Steam is such a beast - on an impulse, i bought the game (wanted to wait for a -25% sale during christmas) ... started downloading, took a dump, got a sandwich, download done.

Great intro (dat female astronaut!), great main menu music already (it's no Baba Yetu, but it's reasonably epic). psyched!

edit: I went blind into this ... is that Sean Bean?! Amazing :D

There's a tiny little arrow near the other buttons that show it. Other than that, you can press "e".

From my obsessive restart experience, it really depends a lot on the map. Sometimes the AI is close enough to you and their camps are in a good enough spot so that barbarians are attacking them rather than you, but there's definetly scenarios where you are the main target of a camp or two and it can throw a monkey wrench on your early game plan to deal with that. Especially if you are planning on being aggressive, there are definetly situations where you have to postpone the first war all the way to the mid game because of barbarians.

(but oh well, I probably suck, so)
