I'm glad I got an early start on the thread this week, as tomorrow's CBD is absolutely PACKED with exciting content. I mean, honestly guys... if you can't find at least one thing that's worth buying this week, then... well, then I guess that means the industry's doomed. Or maybe there's something wrong with YOU. Are you blind, is that it? Did you blind yourself attempting to recreate the accident that gave Daredevil his superpowers, and not tell anyone?

Is that what happened? You poor thing! :(

Maybe you can get your spouse or partner to read your comics to you this week, "Matt".

Batman & Robin (Tomasi and Gleason FTW!), Batgirl (aka the fun I'm missing with PeeGee), Flash (the road to Flashpoint!), Emerald Warriors (more Bleez pleeze!), Generation Lost (Jaime noooo), Knight & Squire (wot wot), New Avengers (more Doreen NOW), Wolverine (a birthday party? bad idea, new girlfriend), X-Factor (maybe), Hack/Slash (maybe), Warlord of Mars (surprisingly good), and Brave and the Bold (SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!)

Happy reading! :D

New Avengers! (<3 It's my favorite running series right now) I think that and Batman & Robin are the only books for me this week.

That Uncle Scrooge statue is looking pretty baller though. I may have to pick that up.

I generally dig Patrick Gleason, but is there some requirement that Robin's head be drawn f*cked up in this series?

Also his Batman is very Keaton/Burton-esque.

This weeks haul:

ADVENTURE COMICS #523
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #654 BIG
BATMAN AND ROBIN #20
BIRDS OF PREY #9
DC COMICS PRESENTS GREEN LANTERN FEAR ITSELF #1
DC COMICS PRESENTS WONDER WOMAN #1
FLASH #9 (FLASHPOINT)
GREEN LANTERN EMERALD WARRIORS #7

I'm not sure why I keep buying Emerald Warriors honestly. I keep waiting for Tomasi to bring the awesome like he did on his run on GLC and it just isn't clicking with me. Bleez is far and away my favorite part of the book so when the Red Lantern monthly starts that will probably signal the end of me buying EW. As much as I've been loving Brightest Day I'll be happy when it's over, I get the feeling Johns and Tomasi are stretching themselves too thin.

I'm happy for Gleason mainly because (for now) it's the closest thing I'll get to Doug Mahnke returning to drawing the Bat.

UC Spidey and Cap for sure. Not sure about UC: NUvA since Millar has been terrible lately, guess it depends on how important it is to DoSM.

But who's going to draw the big titty Green Lantern Corps girls now?! >:|

Enjoy your sausagefest.

Loving that Adventure cover. The preview for the new Batman & Robin creative team looks pretty good too.

I'm gonna be getting:

Batman & Robin #20 - Cornell's story was kind of a throwaway, hopefully this is better.

Osborn: Evil Incarcerated #3 - I've never heard of Kelly Sue DeConnick before, but she's doing a great job with this mini.

Adventure Comics #523 - Jiminez + Levitz do the Legion. Should be good (needs Giffen on the writing team for perfection though).

Ultimate Captain America #2 - Ron Garney was born to draw Cap, and Jason Aaron's always on point.

Black Panther: Man Without Fear #515 - Check this book out if you haven't already. The initial premise was nonsensical (he gets beat by Doctor Doom so he leaves his country to 'prove himself,' taking Matt Murdock's request to protect Hell's Kitchen while leaving his wife Storm on her own. Somehow nobody knows who he is.), but the execution afterwards has been great. The whole feel is very Batman: Year One.

Knight & Squire #5 - Most of the references are for Anglophiles or those of British heritage only, but this series is one of the most charming things I've read in forever. The issue where they had to fight Richard III and he spoke in rhyming couplets & iambic pentameter the whole time was genius.

New Avengers #9 - I hope some kind of a plot emerges in this issue. It's been a while.

Oh yeah, grabbing Thunderstrike.

I've really been enjoying this book more than I should. Good dumb fun. Plus the creative team on the art side is rock solid, really better treatment than the character deserves.

Plus it's implied he'll get a visual overhaul. :O

No way! It's been great.

I was this series' biggest advocate during the first run, but since the renumbering I've felt like Avengers has had all the heat while these guys sit around the kitchen table joking about how second rate they are. NA had so much dynamism before, but they feel like they have no purpose now without being the main team or being the rebel team like they were in Civil War/Dark Reign.

I'm going to bite and pick up Onslaught unleashed.

Onslaught was one of my favourite villains and I need to know what happens.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
I'll get The Flash, Vol. 1: The Dastardly Death of the Rogues eventually, but I haven't gotten to all the Blackest Night stuff yet.

Don't think posted in one of these in a while, and believe a few weeks behind on actively reading comics, but nice haul this week.

Though what is up with Robin's head on the cover of BnR?

Anyhow!

BIRDS OF PREY #9
FLASH #9 (FLASHPOINT)

What do you guys think of UC Cap? I've been tempted to start picking it up (and catch up with UC Thor from what I understand was fantastic.

He's trying to channel the Frank Quitely spud-head look for him. I'm glad he is; it gives the character a defined kid-type look. Artists usually draw Robin (actually, most all teenagers) as looking like he's 27, all cheekbones & lantern jowls.

Wenis said:

It's only a 5 issue mini and only one issue out so far. They did a digital inking thing on Garney's pencils that made it look kinda sketchy, but other than that pretty good. Ultimate Thor was another mini, only 4 issues. Great for the first three books, the fourth was kind of a continuity cleanup explaining how he got from that story to Ultimates 1&2. Worth reading.

Big haul probably for myself this week.

Batman and Robin
Fables Are Forever!!!!
Amazing Spider-man
New Avengers
The Walking Dead

I thought New Avengers #7 was fantastic but last months left me cold. I'll give it another try this week but I didn't like the story nor the art. Super excited for the new Fables though. The first Cinderella series was a lot of fun.

I've been trying to get into comics for the past few weeks so have been reading Batman Streets of Gotham, really out of the loop though.

When did Batman die?
After SoG what should I read next?
This week I'l get batman and robin, maybe spiderman....

BATMAN AND ROBIN
THUNDER AGENTS
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Of course STAN LEE STARBORN art by Khary Randolph a relative new guy on the scene but I like his work.

Just two this week.
The Flash #9: The last two issues were nice backstories for Captain Boomerang and Reverse Flash but Francis Manapul's art in 1-6 was amazing and I can't wait to see more.

Superman #708: I'm probably in the minority but I have enjoyed the Grounded story line thus far. It's kind of corny and doesn't feel like it's going to have a major impact in the DC universe, but I'm fine with that.

Bats died at the end of Final Crisis taking down Darkseid. I'd recommend checking out as much of Grant Morrison's Batman run as you can, up through Batman RIP -> Final Crisis -> Batman & Robin #1-16 > Return of Bruce Wayne -> Batman Inc. That's been the core Batman story over the past couple of years, and it's awesome, one of the best runs ever (maybe the best[/i].

ADVENTURE COMICS #523 : Big hopes for the new artistic team. LONG LIVE THE LEGION!
BATMAN AND ROBIN #20 : For a filler, I thought Cornell really brought it. I know it's not the most popular opinion but I thought the arc really came together with the last episode. Hyped for Tomasi and Gleason though.
FLASH #9 : Love Scott Kolins' art but oh boy Manapul is back!
KNIGHT & SQUIRE #5 : Loved the series for its quirkiness from the very start but #4 was were it hit that sweet spot of great characterization, drama and crazyness. Do want an ongoing.
HAUNT #13 : Or "Kirkman sure can write the shit out of comics", really the more the story goes the more interesting it gets.

Yeah, it might be too niche to support an ongoing, but I could definitely read this stuff every month. He's done a great job of filling these characters and their wacky world out. I loved Jarvis Poker the British Joker, who can't be bothered to commit crimes because they're too gauche. But Richard III was the best villain ever. The Milkman was awesome too, taking characters from Benny Hill novelty songs is pretty funny.

Clearly you don't know fappable if you're talking about Jim Balent. Guy is terrible outside of haunted vaginas. Never liked his stuff.

Eww, Jim Balent art was ugly as sin. Protip, women do not have perfectly spherical breasts. And he was bad at faces as well, had this very awkward look to them. Best Catwoman artists are Darwyn Cooke and Cam Stewart. That 50's look really suits her.

Here's my list-

Batman And Robin #20
Flash #9
Knight & Squire #5 (OF 6)
Red Robin #20
Ultimate Avengers Vs New Ultimates #1 (OF 6)
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #153

Millar's Avengers has been dumb fun so far (even if the last arc kinda sucked) so I'll give it a few issues before flushing the chain entirely. This will probably be my last issue of Flash and/or Batman and Robin depending on the quality of the issues.

Damn, I need more good comics to read!

I really liked Alan Davis's (I'm partial to his art anyhow) take on the evening dress and cat mask, but Cooke's design is great too and Adam Hughes has a blast with it.

Damn, I need more good comics to read!

The next issue of Savage Dragon will be a good jumping on point as it starts a new arc. :D

The Spirit has also consistently been delivering courtesy of David Hine and Moritat. Plus the back up stories have all been pretty good and had some amazing talent involved.

The new Batman & Robin is supposed to be the new on going creative team so hopefully that's more to your liking.

The Spirit has also consistently been delivering courtesy of David Hine and Moritat. Plus the back up stories have all been pretty good and had some amazing talent involved.

The new Batman & Robin is supposed to be the new on going creative team so hopefully that's more to your liking.

Savage Dragon? Nah, never been too much of a Larson guy, I think that none of the old Image crew have aged very well to be honest. Never heard anyone talk about the Spirit though, might check that out. I've quite enjoyed Hine's work on the Batbooks over the past few years.

As for Batman and Robin, I'm having a hard time going back to average stories after Morrison's run, they all seem a little... I don't know, shallow and pointless I guess. The Morrison run was about these massive themes and managed to weave something amazing from 70 years of history, I'm not sure if anyone else can live up to it. And especially since the solicit makes a mention of Brightest day which I've been trying to avoid. Dropping Flash because of the ties to that and Flashpoint, I'm starting to get cold about dropping books now, do it like a hitman quick and to the point :)

The only batbooks I''m reading now are Detective (which is brilliant) and Reb Robin which is keeping me hooked with some seriously great art. Marcus To is consistently killing it on that book. When he goes I go too though. It's weird, for 20 years I've bought every Batman book on the market, and now just two of them...

Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets) set the tone for the whole Firstwave line at DC. Spirit is a lot of fun, and the general premise is Denny Colt is really under the impression he came back from the dead and cannot die; but he's just a bit crazy. And not Mel Gibson Lethal Weapon crazy, he just takes crazy risks.

The First Wave book itself is a lot of fun. Haven't checked out Doc Savage as I'm waiting on the trade for that one.

It's an interesting take on familiar faces (Batman, Doc Savage, The Spirit, Rima the Jungle Girl).

Forgot about Generation Lost! Damned, love the book!

Btw I caught up on the last 3 issues of Brightest Day, two gripes :

-Hawkman and Hawkgirl :
What seems the end of their arc was good but why didn't Johns and Tomasi let them have a fuck at the end? Can't fictional couple be happy or at least be happy once in a while? DICK MOVE! Even though we all know they'll come back soon
-Aquaman :
Seriously the hand-cutting scene was badly handled (ah!), at least give me a Black Manta lurking in the corner of a panel beforehand (ah! ah!). It was so abrupt that it didn't do anything for me

But I still find the book enjoyable for example the Deadman scenes with his
grand father
were a high point of the book. Brought a smile to my face.

#3 didn't do as much for as the premise hinted at. Maybe I'll should read it again. But #4 with the love drama, the way the armor was used in terms of character interactions and showing part of their past was really skillfull to me.

Let's cross our fingers for another 6 issues mini!

Delays killed my interest for this as a "monthly". Anyone knows when it is collected?

No idea.

I don't mind, it's not like I need a book, and christ knows I waited for issues of that pile of sh*t Civil War to release. Ugh, what a bucket of f*ck that series was.

Oh, and my primary shop is reducing inventory and moving to a slightly smaller shop. I asked last week and got filled in, official announcement went out today.

Unfortunately, as is the trend with a lot of comic shops; they're reducing their back issue inventory overall. This is the opening for digital comics. Collectors can still have their dead trees that gain value, but for folks who just want to read stories, being able to go online and buy a cheap copy to read would be a great business opportunity.

Hint. Hint. Hint.

Thing is, as long as I can't buy a wide aray of cbr files I can read on whatever device I feel like, I'll be keeping my dead trees whether it's in floppies or trades...

Don't go getting all super nerdy defensive on my ass. I've got six drawer boxes behind me, a 6 foot bookshelf full of trades, and 10 long boxes (about, haven't counted in a while but they keep multiplying) in the attic.

I've got plenty of floppies.

Still, the increase of shops reducing back issue inventory means it's going to be harder to fill in old runs, or collect old favorites without going to a con.

One of the biggest hurdles for new readers is the massive history of these franchises; so you Kool-Aid drinkers are going to need to acknowledge the value in the digital model.

I'm one of you; but there is stuff out there that is completely non-essential (Brightest Day, Thunderstrike) that I could just as easily read on a color digital reading device and save space in my home and money.

For a new generation, it will just be easier to download Frank Miller's run on Daredevil and read it on their digital doodads.

But I'm with you on what you're saying, if funnybooks want to stop thriving like they are now they need to get into digital distribution HARD and FAST. Thing is, most of the online shops specialize in the rape of customers. I mean just look at the shit Marvel tries to pull with their Vault shit.

EDIT : All in all, I just don't want to buy license to read comics that Marvel or DC can decide to take back from me on a whim. DRM less CBR files are the way to go.

June 22nd for the hardcover.

I think I've mentioned it before but I'm getting pretty tired of The Walking Dead. Andrea's still my favorite and if anything ever happens to her I think that may be when I quit. Not sure, just doesn't seem that big.

New Avengers... meh.

Batman and Robin was great though. Overall story doesn't seem anything special but the writers write the Bat group wonderfully.

I've kind of been tired of Walking Dead's, rather cyclic story telling for some time, but continue to read out of habit.

I think it's mostly because everyone is expecting something to happen, but unexpectedly so when it doesn't happen it's like "guess I need to keep going to get that payoff".

I mean Kirkman has said that this group will eventually just not be anymore and new characters will take over...He's probably still toying with that idea.
