COMICS! |OT| April 2014. Truly, there is no shame in continuing to read awful comics.

So I got my shipment of a few TPBs. Days of Future Past, Thor: God of Thunder, and Hawkeye (2nd one).

Flipped through and love the art of Hawkeye and Thor. DofP certainly has some dated art styles but I'm sure I'll like it.

Also, it made me remember some old comics I had when I was a kid. I might still have them, even if they are in terrible condition. I had the Christmas X-Men 143 with Shadowcat and that demon thing. I also had X-Men #1 with Claremont/Jim Lee, and some Dark Phoenix comic where she destroys an entire planet full of green people. Also had a Wolverine comic where he fights Sabretooth. Wolverine had bone claws and Sabretooth had adamantium claws at the time.

They're all in terrible condition now but that's kinda cool I s'pose.

I've only been visiting IST for a few months but so far it seems like they have a monthly sale at a time. I wouldn't worry too much about it, they'll eventually have a certain publisher on sale again.

Awesome. That's about what I figured.

Now then, one last cast out in hopes of getting an opinion on the stuff in the TMNT Classics books. I guess if nobody speaks up for or against them I'll just take the safe route and get the first 3-4 as a sampler to decide if I want the rest.

You could ask this on the IDW boards. Yeah, they're a ghost town but some people do occasionally chime in in the TMNT section.

Mine just arrived today, and the packaging was great. I was worried at first because the box was so large, but when I opened it the box was stuffed full of padding. I'm quite happy.

In related news, the difference between the Planetary Omnibus and the Ultimate Spider-Man Omnibus in terms of binding is night and day. And I've heard this is a consistent issue for DC Omnibus editions. Why doesn't DC insist on making prestige editions that you can actually open up and lay flat before page 238? They can do it with their Absolute editions, so I don't see why they suddenly become incompetent for the Omnibus line.

Whoever is in charge of editing the DC Omnibus line is weirdly incompetent, not just in terms of binding (which to be fair, has improved from the days where they would glue the binding to the back of the spine for some reason) but also in how they mis-solicit things and do a poor job of restoring the art. The way they've treated the Absolute line in the last few years as a dumping ground for any old story has been kind of disheartening as well tbh

DC does have some interesting stuff coming up though - they're apparently doing their own versions of IDW's excellent Artist's Editions, with Frank Miller's Ronin and Kelley Jones Batman out this year and Miller's Dark Knight, Neal Adams Green Arrow/Green Lantern, Brian Bolland's Killing Joke, and some undefined Sandman stuff out after that.

It's a bit nitpicky, but there was at least one mistake in the Planetary Omnibus' pre-issue quote pages. Like, it's just a page with a single giant quote from the issue before the actual issue, and there was a typo. Shit bothered me.

I am all over a fancy version of Green Lantern/Green Arrow.

Curious to get some thoughts on some books I was thinking of picking up. Most recent acquisition was Star Wars Omnibus: Knights of the Old Republic Volume 1, which is on its way now. Liked the sound of it and heard some good things. Will probably pick up the other two volumes if I like that.

Anyone know any other good Star Wars comics by the way? I have the original Legacy collections and liked that alright.

Anyway, the other books I was considering were:
Deadpool Deluxe Collection 1 with the first 12 issues
Aquaman by Geoff Johns
Zero Volume 1 by Ales Kot
Spider-Man Family Business
Superior Foes of Spider-Man

The thing about Marvel books is that I never know if its worth it to get the individual trades or if I should wait on some inevitable Ultimate Collection or Omnibus. I don't know what's up with these hardcover deluxe editions either that seem to collect 12 issues each like with Deadpool here or with Mark Waid's Daredevil.

Johns run on Aquaman was really good, he did a great job reinvigorating the character.
Zero is some next level God tier shit, buy it and come along for the ride.

Don't hesitate, get zero. The one book that I get more excited for every week.

Got the first Hellboy library in the mail, along with Daytripper (already read it) and Spiderman Family Business. I really hope I like Hellboy. And need a Spiderman story to satisfy me after Marvel Knights ended.

but I am taking tiny steps forward

How did I not know about these!? If Dark Knight Returns is a reasonable price (AKA same-ish as Absolute Edition pricing), I'm gonna be all over that.

it's so frustrating that they shit the bed so hard on the New Teen Titans Vol. 3 omni. I have the first one and intended to keep getting them, but i'm not gonna bother if it's just gonna be incomplete like that. It even turns me off of getting the second one (which apparently had a mistake too)

Shot in the dark but have you read Uncanny X-Force? If not, read that, some could argue that Deadpool is the star of the show.

This one? It might be next on my list. Is that entire run recommended? Or should I look at getting individual trades?

I can't vouch for it, but when it comes up people usually say the new Deadpool is pretty fun if you can endure its mediocre opening arc.

Marvel Now! Deadpool is good.

Sounds great. I'll look into picking it up in my next order. Probably in mid summer.

And general questions to anybody who can answer:

I have Cable and Deadpool trades 1-5. I cannot find 6 or 7 anywhere. 8 is the "Deadpool kills teh Marvel Universe", right? Anybody have any idea where I can get 6&7 new?

I also have the first three Daniel Way Deadpool trades and enjoyed them but haven't got the rest. I really liked the first one about the Secret Invasion but that third book had that atrocious pirate story that really turned me off. Is the rest of the Way run worth picking up?

Did that new Punisher run turn out well? The one where he moved to Los Angeles? I remember seeing previews of it a month or two back and it looked pretty interesting.

I'll say this about Uncanny Avengers, it's the only superhero book that after I read it, I think "shit, I need to read the next issue as soon as possible". Hell, I get sad when I reach the halfway mark cuz I know these the last few pages of this story I'm gonna see for a month.

Grab Way's Deadpool/X-Men trade and Magnum Opus, then drop it. Then pick up MarvelNOW Deadpool, maybe skip to after the first arc.

The first Secret Invasion Way DP stuff was good...then its all downhill.

Marvel NOW Deadpool is like the opposite, in that the first story arc is bad, and then it's the best Deadpool book since Gail Simone left.

The Dark Reign stuff was better, after that it all nose dives.

I'm enjoying it. It's setting up some fun things

I'm still annoyed by the cancelling of further volumes of the Starman omnibus in paperback. Got the first two volumes and everything :(

Just finished Zero. Fuck, what an issue. I really do love that you're time-skipping in an entirely non-linear way, and yet the way the issues are presented, you're getting the themes and reasoning and characterizations in a completely logical way. And Ales Kot has a talent for busting out these perfectly crafted scenes
I loved a woman once.. Me too.
that burrow down to the emotional core of the book.

I see. I was also wondering about the door and thought that maybe it was
some weird porn but Vibranium I think hit the nail on the head when he said it could be child porn ring or something.

I'm going with child-porn ring with strong hints of necrophilia.
As for why he
Zero popped Zizek
, I feel like it's just the culmination of everything up to that point. He's stopped taking his
pills
at this point, I believe, and I think everything is hitting him in waves, like the beach that features so prominently in this issue.

Ok, did some research and 236, the one I bought says Jan 1982 on it. Even 237 Feb. 1982 on it. The one Taj posted says Jan 1981. So I got the comic that has my birth month and year printed on the cover. But it's not the comic that really came out. Sigh, oh well.

damn it, that comixology sale on Superior Spiderman made me bite. I'm not even gonna get around reading it until I catch up on the last few volumes of Amazing Spiderman.

This birth month comic stuff is kind of stupid fun. For the Legion fan in me, here is mine:

Hmm. I do really like Wildfire, so it's kind of awesome that I get an origin issue.

Huh. Looks like I got the first appearance of Cardiac for my birth month? I had no idea he was that old, geez. Kind of assumed he was a relatively new character when he showed up in Superior.

Umm, it says in the yellow box 1982 and January. The one that was after it said Feb 1982.

Marvel's database shows the same bicycle ad on every issue that month.

I was born around the debut of everyone's favorite symbiote serial killer, as I've just found out.
April 1992

I have the issue where the Carnage symbiote first shows up in his jail cell somewhere. Forget what issue it was.
EDIT: Amazing Spider-Man #345
