Where is the loud noise stuff coming from?

Bernard Diaz, 89, a 32-year tenant of the Cecil, said he heard a "tremendous" noise the night before Lam was missing in the fourth floor above him.

He also said there was flooding on the fourth floor the day after Lam went missing.

I drive by this Hotel home nearly every day after work around 5-6 pm and the area around the hotel definitely isn't the best. Really sad what happened to Elisa-I hope they find out what happened soon.

People are doubting her ability to get offered random drugs in a run down motel in down town LA? I figured that would be the most common place to be offered/solicited random drugs.

Fucking disturbing. Poor girl.

She was playing around in the elevator. If she were afraid, she would not be bunny hopping out of the elevator and playing with the buttons. Perhaps the person not in view is the killer though.

Has this been posted yet? Her strange behavior in the elevator:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KW8TYoEQ5g

Edit: Oh ya it was in the last link in the OP.

I think the door didn't close because she pushed numerous buttons. When she finishes pushing the last button, it's almost at the same time as the door would close, so they reopen.

I think she was on drugs. But maybe she was drugged by someone. I doubt she made it on the roof. But even if the hotel says the access to the roof was locked, it might not be true. It might HAVE to be locked, but it may not have been.

Why are you pretending that "DOOR HOLD" opens the door for 2 days?

It opens, theres about a ... maybe... 4 second delay. Then it starts to close again.

The elevator is working fine, when she & WHATEVER else is with her isn't around.

Think so. Random, maybe caught on she was alone? But what drug would she be on? Los angeles is kinda Coke/Weed? I can't see this girl tripping out on a bad batch of LSD... if we know. Who does drugs that harsh by themselves? I wanna know who she was with before.

Could be a button used by cleaning staff, which keeps it open for much longer.

I don't believe so. She was a very smart student apparently. Studied at UBC.

The strange behavior is, well, strange. I didn't know her personally, so I can't comment on anything, but I suspect she was either drugged or drunk.

some very smart individuals still have mental disorders. although, I only watched the video, so I dont have any other thoughts on this girl. it is mostly depressing to me.

But she didn't have her glasses. Thus why she attempted to get closer to the buttons. I'm guessing she still couldn't make out what it said and just pressed all the buttons but accidentally hitting the hold door button as shown in this image:

On the websleuths forum posted, someone posted a picture of the 15th floor around page 4 and it has the same titles and color as the floor in the video. They said she was staying on the fourth floor but she was in the 15th in the video, why? Thus near the end, the elevator closes and reopen on the same floor. However it has to be the 14th floor...unless the 15th and 14th has the same color. Anyway, it closes, and then go to the 10th and the color is now orange. In a review, they stated the closed the stairs at night...
..I think I'm going to take a break from this.

If the video was from right before she died then I'm guessing she was pressing all the buttons to stall up the elevator. She figured out some way to keep those doors open for an unusually long time. Though she also seems kind of baffled by them staying open so it's really hard to tell.

She looks high for sure. At first she looks scared or like shes trying to get away, but then it seems to turn into some sort of game.

Possibly trying to play things off once she realized whoever she was trying to get away from was there. People act goofy when they get uncomfortable.

Ahhhhhh her reaching around and stuff would make sense if she didn't have glasses. Then she gets out and tries counting on her hand to remember what floor she was on. Then maybe jumping out and giving a little stomp on the ground because she was expecting somebody waiting for her or was trying to draw somebodies attention to ask them what floor she was on. She must of have some terrible eyes or this doesn't hold.

Yeah, which is why I'm not completely confident in what I said.

This could be the area where it took place. Looks pretty similar.

OMG, reminds me of this seedy ass hotel my friends stayed at in San Francisco during Outside Lands last year. It was cheap as hell, but when we got there and saw that there were shared toilets and showers we knew this place was a shithole. The bathroom was disturbing. I can't believe anyone would use that regularly.

weird going through this stuff.

Looking at this, the possibility of suicide seems to have gotten smaller. I mean, sure, she could have developed suicidal tendencies throughout the last week she was alive, but I'm not sure what would cause something like that in a city of strangers. She was there traveling on vacation or something, right?

Also, if this turns out to be a murder, perhaps the killer didn't have to have carried her body up the ladder on the rooftop. It's possible that she was chased up to the rooftop, saw the ladder as her only escape option, and climbed it herself. Or maybe she was killed beforehand; a corpse wouldn't provide any resistance to someone carrying it. It's possible to climb a ladder if you attach it to your back.

That said, if it is a murder, I'm not sure why the killer would put the body in the water tank. It obviously would eventually be discovered and link the incident to the hotel. If the killer is part of the hotel staff (which is likely considering the locks), then he/she just narrowed down the suspect list drastically. Of course, if the killer is not an employee of the hotel, it's gonna be pretty hard to track them down.

What a complex case...

Guys I'm sure the door stays open this long because it is a button to keep doors open for a long time for cleaning staff, so it doesn't have to be jammed by something to being kept open.

She acted weird but I don't think she was on drug. She might have pushed several buttons to cover her tracks in case somebody came into the lift with her.
The hand movements were definitely weird maybe due to the anxiety.
And maybe she didn't go straight to her room because she wanted to verify whether or not she was followed.

That WebSleuth forum links to a Expedia review wherein they mention a security guard that follows you around the building. I posit that said guard is the number one suspect. Guard is off camera, holding button to keep elevator doors open. When Lam is gesturing she is talking to him. When she finally leaves it is with him. Something goes wrong and here we are.

URGENT

I think the elevator video that has been released to the public has been tampered with by someone. This is not a joke.

Could someone please look at the 2:57 mark and confirm something for me? Does anyone notice a jump-cut when the elevator door closes after she leaves?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KW8TYoEQ5g

Are my eyes deceiving me or is this really happening?

Either someone at the hotel tampered with the video to not be seen walking in the hallway, or if the LAPD released the video they cut something out so as to not make any potential suspects apparent. The rest of the video appears very fluid.

WTF is going on?! I hope the LAPD is at least aware of this. I can not see the damn time code of the video to even make sense of it. Is there a version of the video with the time code clearly marked?

Looks like it now that you mentioned it.

If it was and the LAPD didn't notice it wouldn't it put the security guard who apparently followed people around the main suspect now?

Autopsy inconclusive, toxicology tests to come, and the water is apparently clean

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-0222-hotel-body-20130222,0,4318339.story

More tests need to be performed before a cause of death can be determined for the Canadian tourist whose body was found inside a water tank atop a downtown Los Angeles hotel, coroner's officials said Thursday.

The body of Elisa Lam, 21, was pulled from a tank at the Cecil Hotel on Tuesday. Lam, who authorities said traveled to California from Vancouver on Jan. 26, was last seen Jan. 31 at the hotel.

Los Angeles County coroner's spokesman Ed Winter said the autopsy was completed. He would not say whether the medical examination found visible signs of trauma on the body.

But Winter said toxicology tests, which will take six to eight weeks to complete, would help determine if Lam was taking medication or another substance at the time of her death and, if so, whether it was at therapeutic levels. He did not elaborate.

Winter also did not reveal whether coroner's investigators had determined how Lam got into the water tank or how long she may have been inside. The matter is being treated as a death investigation, he said.

Law enforcement officials familiar with the case said that although foul play is a possibility, they are examining whether Lam's death might have been an accident.

The body was discovered by a hotel worker checking out complaints of weak water pressure, police said.

Lam was reported missing about three weeks ago. Last week, police released video of her inside a Cecil Hotel elevator. In surveillance footage, Lam is seen pushing buttons for multiple floors and at one point stepping out of the elevator, waving her arms.

The only ways to get to the roof are via a locked door that only employees have access to and a fire escape. The door is equipped with an alarm system that notifies hotel personnel if someone is on the roof, Los Angeles police Sgt. Rudy Lopez said.

Also Thursday, health officials said there were no traces of disease-causing bacteria in the Cecil Hotel's water supply.

A do-not-drink order implemented Tuesday was expected to be in place through the weekend until the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health determines that the water is suitable for drinking, said Angelo Bellomo, director of environmental health.

Officials tested for disease-causing coliforms at different places inside the 15-story Cecil Hotel.

"The tests came back negative, meaning that if they were in the water they are no longer viable," Bellomo said. The test didn't take into account water conditions before samples were taken Tuesday, Bellomo said. But the chance of disease-causing bacteria surviving was "very unlikely" because of the chlorine in the water.

The Cecil Hotel is expected to drain and flush its tanks and water lines before sanitizing them, a process that could take two or three days. The Department of Public Health will then conduct another series of tests before deeming the water safe to drink.

You know at first I thought she was talking to herself when she went outside the elevator and waved her arms, but after she waved her arms she did a hand gesture where it looks like she is "listing" stuff. You know that gesture where you are like "first of all" and you grab one finger and then "second of all" and you grab both fingers, etc. makes it look like she is listing reasons or listing to someone. I dunno. I hope that's clear :p it's kinda hard to describe hand gestures. Someone probably mentioned it already. She could be talking to herself still I guess...trying to sort out why the elevator isn't closing.

A good point. It isn't clear when this video was taken, but I assume it's from January 31st, because in news reports that's when hotel staff last saw her. She was reportedly scheduled to check out February 1st. If she was murdered by someone who knew her departure date, they didn't want her to leave (or she made it known to some stranger at a bar or club she was leaving on February 1st), they possibly wanted their "last chance" to try and be with her. This all could have happened if she had spent her last night out in LA partying or clubbing with someone she became acquainted with or met up with.

More theories regarding the elevator video:

  • It appears the elevator door tries to close 13 seconds in.
  • She might be conversing with someone out in the hallway, we just can't tell.
  • The reason why she is looking around is that she may be looking for someone else for help in a "uncomfortable" situation she's trying to get out of while quite possibly under the influence. Someone outside may be pressing the up or down button, preventing the elevator door from closing.
  • At around the 2:02 mark, if she is alone, could she waving her hands at the door sensor? Is she thinking the elevator door is blocked, or testing it to see why the doors aren't closing?

I just want to clarify that Elisa lam did not have a mental disorder of any kind.

This is coming from a friend who actually knew her for many years. Now, whether she was under the influence is a different matter.

Guys I'm sure the door stays open this long because it is a button to keep doors open for a long time for cleaning staff, so it doesn't have to be jammed by something to being kept open.

This is creepy as fuck. It does look like she might have been interacting with someone outside the elevator, leading credence to the idea that the doors were being kept open from outside. Maybe not, but the video is genuinely disturbing.

How the hell do you end up on the 15th/14th floor of a hotel, when you're staying on the 4th, without your glasses or contacts?

If you're gonna kill someone, make sure they're from out of town? Drug them at the club, follow them to where ever they're going to go? How do you even hide a body in a water tower?

Or maybe the elevator sensor was broken and she was trying to trip it so she could go up to her room because she really had to pee? So she's trying to hide from the door sensor, and then she's stepping out to talk to the guy at the front desk?

Elevator video is definitely disturbing.

Initially, she is clearly hiding from someone in the elevator. Unclear whether playful or dangerous. She is visible anxious. The elevator door doesnt close.

She then confronts the person outside. There seems to be someone to the left, given by her reaction. It seems she wants to go back into the elevator, but is called out. She looks anxious.

It then seems there is a conversation outside the elevator. She brings her hands to her head. She then goes back into the elevator, almost as if told to do so, and presses a bunch of buttons. She looks anxious by the way she raises her hands to the elevator doors and keeps putting her hands on her head.

Then the strangest part. She goes back outside, and begins talking and waving her hands towards the elevator, not toward the left hallway. It is unclear whether there is someone actually there, but she is acting as if there is.

Jesus fuck, that video is so disturbing. She definitely had to have been drunk and or high for sure ....

EDIT: From 27 seconds to 37 seconds, what or whom is she trying to hide from in the elevator when she presses herself up against the corner by the buttons?

My first thoughts were similar. But according to her family she has no mental health issues or history of drug use. She still could have been drugged or indulged or something. But either way after watching it again there could easily be someone out of the frame so the video gives an appearance that she is crazy or drugged be really it is normal behavior if someone was bothering her or simply just talking to her.

Why does the door never close till she leaves? Did she hit a button to keep it open or does someone else keep it open? And then she ends up on the roof?

This is one of those stories that you really hope gets solved. The video is creepy, the story tragic, and disgusting for those who were staying there.

This is exactly the plot of Dark Water.

Edit: Didn't read rest of thread, my bad.

I'm not trying to make a joke, but it is kind of strange how much this case is similar to Dark Water. There was even a weird elevator scene in that film.

I can't help but think how awesome it would be to have an X-Files episode out of this. That elevator video is creepy, though. At first it does look like she's hiding from somebody or something and then she starts walking in and out of the elevator and that elevator door not closing. It's so bizarre. I really hope this gets solve soon.

This part of DTLA? If this girl was walking outside she'd probably either have her hair pulled out by a vagrant, hassled by vagrants, or return to the room due to the smell in the area. I know what you mean, but DTLA isn't really a social place like that, the rough bits.

Poor girl though, either way.

Except for not really. A street over, maybe, but Main Street is pretty safe, especially where the Cecil Hotel is (right in the center of the gentrification).

At 14 seconds the door starts to close but something stops it. Didn't notice that the first couple times I watched it. She seems very frustrated that the elevator won't start.
