How does the exotic sword quest work when you have done one already? I thought people were saying you could skip the initial steps and just collect materials.

I would suggest not using it on your first character, personally. But you wouldn't be skipping much at all if you do decide to use it, as you can still play through all the previous missions whenever you want.
Just finished a raid and got almost nothing. I think a level 300 fusion rifle and a level 300 class item. Weeeeeee

So what's good to buy with marks? Caped and need to get something. Should I get one of the Ghost shells. since I still have a blue one, or are any of the hunter helms you can get good? Need a backup for when I want to use an exotic something other then helm and I've gotten literally 0 legendary helm engrams with a ton of everything else.

Complete sword quest on 1 character -> transfer unupgraded swords from alts onto said character -> upgrade them on that character -> Shaxx will give you the material/ability kill farm step for the other swords

I was constantly dying, so I would wager that kill counts across the board are higher.
It really helped me with the Radiance multikills, as I could just lob Sunbreaker-fueled solar grenades and hopefully get post-mortems.toastyToast
