Deus Ex: Mankind Divided review embargo lifts on 8/19

What kind of game is this? I've never played anything from this series. Some comparisons to other games to give me a feel? I'm pretty open to most any genre of game.

I'm probably in the minority but I'm fine if this is true.
I really think the 3rd planned hub in HR, Montreal, would have absolutely destroyed pacing in the second half of the game.
I think the pacing in HR is already kinda fucky in the second half of the game. You go straight from Tai Yong Medical to Picus TV. That's two extremely long levels back to back and it's one of the most tedious parts of the game. Not because the individual levels are bad, but because there's no respite between them. You fly straight from Tai Yong to Picus and the pacing is not great for it. I think a Montreal or Upper Hengsha hub would have been great for the pacing and for world building because you would get to see how the world of Deus Ex looks when it's not dipped in poverty. It wouldn't have to be as big as Hengsha, but smaller one with fewer sidequests would have been great for breaking up those extended levels.

There's really nothing like Deus Ex, the older Thief games would come the closes.

Or maybe think Dishonoured with even more non linear game design, hub worlds, mass effect like conversations.

Things they were working on but got cut:

- Upper Hengsha (was nearly done but they had no narrative reason to visit the area)
- Montreal Hub (I think same as above)
- A level in Bangalore, the narrative of which got integrated into the Singapore mission

Think Alpha Protocol, Dishonored, Fallout. I only say Fallout because it does allow lockpicking, hacking, alternate routes, loud and steath options and dialogue solutions. Deus Ex has lighter RPG elements than a Fallout and the world is a lot smaller than the open world. It's a tighter and more detailed world though.

Yeah, until Mario 64, they'd never given a 10/10. There's still only been about 12 or 14 10 scores. An Edge 8 is generally another magazine's 9, and an Edge 5 is (or is supposed to be) a genuinely average game.

Oh, OK. Cool. I did notice they gave an 8 to Abzu and Bound in this edition of the magazine, though. That's above the critical average.

Yeah, they tend towards the more artsy, less-gamey games. Something like Abzu would be right up their alley, and they gave Journey an 8, too. They're more mainstream nowadays (loving the the GTA games, for instance), but they definitely give the art-y games more love than the mainstream gaming media.

Thanks to this thread I discovered that spielegrotte.de already has the game. Ordered it and it went in delivery in the span of 5 min. Can't wait for the weekend

I think The Witcher 1 demonstrated that you can have a big chapter of the game that's dislocated from the overall plot, and still have it work. I think it's chapter 4 where you go to the town in the countryside and deal with a bunch of semi-unrelated sidequests for like 10 hours. I think that part was a huge success, in that it gave the player a rest from the otherwise heavy main story.

Could not disagree ore. Chapter 4 of the The Witcher is that game's kryptonite to me. Stops me cold every single playthrough and always takes a fair bit of effort for me to push through. Hell I didn't even finish W1 until just before W2's release just because of Chapter 4 when I played it on initial release and then with the enchanced edition.

In isolation I think it's a great chapter and would make a wonderful side story, DLC, or expansion. But at that point in the game where things are really heating up it just brings the whole game to a dead stop.

Which one was Chapter 4 again?

Anyways it's not just that, it's more of a time issue.
They could have had some basic plotline to tie in but they would need other activities like side quests to make the player stay there and it needs to be good enough to not make it feel like it's breaking the pacing. Writing side quests is time consuming as it is but more so in a game like Deus Ex where you have multiple permutations due to player actions is a lengthy task.

The developer commentary mentions how they wanted a lot more quests, then they had to settle for 25....then the writer said he could probably do 22 in the time given. Spreading that many across would have affected it negatively. I think the game could have been even more indepth had it been in development for another year, but then that would have meant we would get Mankind Divided next year.

Oh man, all these positive GAF impressions are getting me even more excited!! We're so close, guys, I can't wait for Tuesday!!!

As for the OT title, I was considering just doing:

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided |OT| We Asked For This

Also, could anyone with the game tell me how
the new voice actor for David Sarif sounds
? Is it really jarring, or does he do a good job and sound similar?

I saw a stream.
He tries to imitate the old one, sounds pretty close but he also speaks fast. I mistook him for the old one until he slipped a few times.

Just read the Edge review, seems like (hub spoilers)
Prague and Golem City are the only hubs
.

Fuck, I wish I didn't read this. The scope of the game is pointed out very clearly in the spoiler. Avoid it if you want to save the discovery/magic for your actual playthrough.

I played Human Revolution on PC and I'm going this route with Mankind Divided too. I REALLY hope the PC version is strong. My PC meets the recommended specs so hopefully my 970 will perform well here.

Seems like PC review copies are out there also;

Hype!

Going in blind to this baby. Can't wait!

:O

Yeesss.

That's all the reviews I need, tbh. If TB likes it, we're good.

YESSSSS YESSSSSS YESSSSSS!!!!!

I'd wait to see what he says than jump at that single comment. Having said that, if any game is to get a good PC version that is well catered towards, it should be a Deus Ex game, especially with such a strong legacy going back to the original

TB's tastes and mine align pretty heavily and he's a massive Deus Ex fan. If he says that it is a viable GOTY contender, I don't need anything more.

And I was right - TotalBiscuit did not receive a Deus Ex Mankind Divided press Key as of that tweet. Hours after that tweet there is this:

"FYI Squeenix is playing ball with code for Deus Ex but it lands right when I'm doing chemo so any late coverage will be cos of that."

In the Co-optional Podcast hours after that he says:

"I'm supposed to get my code for that tomorrow"

So - no, he didn't post that because he played it and thought it was awesome - don't quote the tweet as evidence that it is amazing

How does deus ex machina play into this game.

Also what are the load times like on ps4

I decided to pick off where i left off on ps3 but ive been stuck on a loading screen for 10 min now :/

Hmm, probably coincidental but my Simply Games order has been charged.

When I checked a short while after ordering there was an option to cancel and now there's none.

I wonder if that means it'll likely dispatch tomorrow for a Saturday delivery.

Anyone knows if any place will hook me up in Michigan? >_>

Nobody answer!! I'm stuck in Chicago and the answer will kill me. Lol

Unless someone knows of a place downtown Chicago...?!

Is that jacket a pre-order bonus or only for the deluxe edition?

It's in all Day One editions so you don't need a pre-order, just buy it on release day.

Also screw you guys, I like Adams's new jacket. I even bought the real thing. :(

Definitely.
They take payments within one hour if they have the stock.

They have removed Deus Ex from their Pre order section.

I remember really liking HR and just checked my achievement list which had 100%. I don't remember doing that but damn I really did like that game.

Didn't really think MD would make a big splash, but here I am now and the hype just hit me. Can't wait to get back into Deus Ex. It honestly has some of the most satisfying stealth gameplay for someone like me who loves stealthing around.

I'm hoping so too. TGC and Simplygames have been kind to me when it comes to getting a game a few days before release. Here's hoping!

Yep - haven't used TGC but Simply Games (and Shopto) are both awesome with early releases. I received No Man's Sky on Saturday when it was a Wednesday release!

Oh wow, nice.

I haven't received any dispatch email so my hopes of tomorrow have been dashed slightly but hopefully Saturday!

Shopto is doing a nice cloth poster with the game though, plus it's slightly cheaper there.
But you most likely won't get your copy until Monday or Tuesday from them.

Well...they ship until 7pm.
So there's hope.

How the fuck could anyone have possibly known that at that time? I hate posts like this. Just fucking state the facts, the underpinning of superiority is unnecessary.

I did, I stated that I don't see how people can interpret that as him playing it at the time and people argued against that. If anyone checked - even I didn't, we could have seen that he hadn't played it within minutes. This is hype culture in full spin. All I'm saying is don't use that as your evidence of it is good, as was used for several pages of this thread

Same here. I love it when I really get excited only as the game is coming out. That's what it been like for me with all the Soulsborne games as well.

Has the devloper mentioned what resolution it runs on the Xbox? I'm going in the shop to pick up the S on Tuesday but I assume the DF analysis will take a day or two.

It's the Hitman engine with similar focus on large environments, I wouldn't be surprised if both end up 1080P.

Hmmm, I guess I can pick it up and not open it until we have some confirmation, which probably wouldn't take long. Actually I assume some GAF people will play it at midnight, so I will know by morning.
Thanks.

Thanks.

Why not just buy it and play it on PS4 ? It's confirmed to be 1080P over there if I recall correctly.

Maybe this is old news, but my subscriber's Edge Magazine arrived this morning - 9/10. And they review harshly. Brilliant!

Ahh yes, Firefox page search failing me ;)
