Digital Foundry: Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered - PS5 DF Tech Review - Is The Upgrade Worthwhile?

There was no reason to remaster the original Horizon, which already looks like a very good game graphically.
...other than Nixxes getting to know the Decima engine (which, hopefully, will be more utilized more in the future across SIE studios - it really is a fantastic engine) better? Nixxes will be doing other ports later. Superficially, it seems, well, superficial. But it's only a 10€ upgrade (which you are not forced to buy), bringing up the most criticized elements of HZD (NPC conversations and water) to HFW standards.

If this would be a full-priced re-release, along the lines of Persona 5 Royal (or whatever Atlus game) I'd be pissed. But it's an optional upgrade, with an obvious target behind the scenes. Don't like it, don't buy it, but for what is on offer, I don't think the price is unreasonable. Nor the effort, but again, that's a future investment.

Its a nice upgrade if a little unnecessary. The game was already decent looking and running at decent performance + image quality on the PS5.

If only this effort was put into a Bloodborne remaster. Where its stuck on 1080P and 30fps.

Preordered the upgrade. I already have the platinum, but my daughter is going to play it with all the snazzy upgrades. Can’t wait to watch.
I platinumed it as well! Were you able to get the discount? I couldn't see it when I tried to order.

I loved Horizon ZD. I've played it through three times, though. I don't think I'm up for a fourth run, so I'll wait on the upgrade. Maybe in a few years.

In a time of diminishing returns, a remaster it's worthless
“worthless” and “useless” are so overused and subjective.

One of those things. Why bitch/moan about something you can just skip? It shouldn’t exist because I say so. Who does it hurt? No one, but I still say it’s useless/worthless/waa waa!

Like you said, Nixxes is familiarizing themselves with the engine and we get a considerable update for all of $10 as a result. Outside of obvious agendas and bias, its existence hurts nothing.

This is the type of $10 upgrade they should have done for Ghost of Tsushima. That native PS5 upgrade was extremely low effort compared to the PS5 enhanced patch that already existed.

Maybe call it "Horizon Enhanced Edition (2024).” “Remastered” to me implies a generational leap because the product is so old, aspects needed to be brought to the modern era.

If every new console generation, the best first party games of the previous generation had this level of effort remaster for £10. I’d buy the lot of them. I prefer it to backwards compatibility, and I think it’s a better strategy at preserving games.

It would keep classics looking as you remembered them looking, too.

I’d pay £10 for a PS6 remaster of GTA V. I don’t care that it’s a meme.

But it doesn't look as good.
Because it's still built off of ZD (scenery etc), it's still using roughly the same engine build as FW, they have the updated Nubis, loads of assets from FW, in fact, in one part of the video I thought they had recorded FW, it's that similar. What doesn't look as good? Water maybe? Hard to tell on that really because ZD does not allow underwater swimming, not does it have sea waves. Other than that there isn't much difference that I can see.

Again, it's the tech from FW so spec wise should be pretty much exactly the same, so when he says the specs are the same it was (to me), well..... Durrr

Wanna know something interesting; during the opening cutscene in the game, the fish jumping up the dam are upside down! At least with my copy of the remaster. Anyone else noticed this as well?

The faces don't look nearly as good as fw, that's probably because fw straight up use like 186 metahuman models while in the remaster they just glowed up existent faces, the still look waxy compared to fw.

Only aloy face looks 99% as good as fw and maybe sylens??

Zero Dawn has a better story and plot than Forbidden West, and the remaster essentially brings HZD up to something a lot closer to the tech in HFW. Personally, I think it's a great remaster that makes the game worth playing through again, especially if you have a PS5 Pro.

Despite the tech improvements in HFW, I felt HZD was still always the better game. I really expected HFW to have Aloy tracking down Sylens to find out what he was up to in HFW, but instead they went with a plot I found much less interesting.
