Digital Foundry: The Last of Us Part 2 PC Review - We're Disappointed - Analysis + Optimised Settings

It's weird because this is running flawlessly on my pc so far so I'm expecting it to shit the bed the further I get.

Metro Exodus EE (and the metro games in general) are PC first titles, and funnily enough it's the console performance that ends up suffering as a consequence.

So a comparison like that doesn't make any sense in this context.

Game runs RTGI 60FPS in 1080+ resolutions on PS5 and SX. Metro is one of the most optimized games with RT on consoles.

After playing TLOU1, I was skipping this anyway. It was a decent game but way overrated.

I'm 4 hours into Indian Jones currently and it's already 10x the game that TLOU1 is.
it's really not. it's a generic 7/10 game. Forspoken is 10x the game indiana jones is. And I mean it.
I liked my time well enough with it but it's just nothing special. I am happy to have finished it though.

Good vid but watch it after finishing the game. It doesn't spoil anything but I don't want to ruin your fun.

Alex continuing to ignore the fact that PS4/PS5 has hardware accelerated decompression and acting dumb founded at where this missing performance has gone to.

the decompression has zero do to with this. the fact that you think it does automatically disqualifies you from the conversation. so, go away

The PS4 has hardware-accelerated decompression? For its 5400 RPM HDD over a USB 2.0 interface?

Metro EE is pretty damn good on PS5/SX (even Series S) tho.

First RTGI 60fps game that runs pretty well and is almost always north of 1440p with its DRS.

Yeah. Also, PS4 and hardware decompression? This console was using HDD and 1.6GHz Jaguar for loading...

Sony keeps fucking up their PC ports. Incredible.

Well I'd bet that exactly what made the game so great on console(purely technologically dialling) is what's fucking up the pc port. Probably heavily tuned around all the little specials the ps APIs allow for which are not directly translatable to PC without some effort which clearly didn't go into this.
This port is half done and someone said "fuck it, just put it out there"

just like Sony's devs don't understand PC hardware it seems
but just few years/months ago nixies was god of ports.... They always knew their way around pc.
But if it's considering a sony game... so now it's sonys fault

well Nixies apparently only helped here and didn't actually port it. also I always thought they were overrated as fuck. none of their ports as of recently was any good

RT in that title on consoles uses the normal-low settings, while most of the other settings are medium.

(15 mins in for the settings)

Yes the game looks good for the performance, but you can use a PC with a 2060 at similar resolutions, higher settings, and get better framerates.

If a comparison is to be made the it should be other games that were first created in a console dev environment and then later ported to PC.

They were LTTP with this apparently. They probably tried to save this disaster but didn't have anough time.

They did decent job with few games but SM2 was shit and this one is shit as well. Quality dropped like a stone.

RT performance of PS5 and SX is worse than 2060 so it's not a surprise. They did excellent job with hardware that was available. We waited for 4 years for next game with RTGI and 60fps on consoles (indiana jones).

i don't want every game to be this sad and prentious. sure..
but this one does is so well. I cried on the ending and it rarely happens.

disgusting. Coming from tlou2 to indiana must be so jarring. It's so stiff and he drops the damn shovel all the fucking time.
Anyway... doesn't matter

I am not talking about the story here... the game design is pretentious trash. "cinematic" bullshit. sadly even Indy was infected in parts by the Sony virus, but not enough to ruin it... it was disappointing to see tho.

Not just the RT, but all settings were dropped.

Only 120 ratings on Steam but the game has a "very positive" with 90% positive responses...

Alex doesn't like the game because it doesn't shine on PC like he hopes it would and it's not favorable to compare it to PS5 Pro.

Where are all of these PC game showcases that make the most out of a 5090... they don't exist.

the update is live on playstation as well. Unfortunately pro mode shadows still broken in certain sections

I thought I read that this port was finished awhile ago and they were just waiting for season 2 to come around. Guess that was a lie.

Runs fine for me (shrug). Maxed, DLSS Quality (looks better-than-native at preset K). With framegen and a 60 lock, its an effective 4k120 experience (though looks better-than-native, as I said).

Folks underestimate consoles lower level coding.

Yeah TLOU2 is likely one of the most optimized PS4 games, so when ported to PS5/PS5Pro, which is a very substantial step up in power across the board, well guess what... its not 4K/120fps either.

But of course if the PS5 Pro doesn't work wonders its "underpowered and overpriced", if its on a similarly specced PC "its a bad port".

These clowns are really showing their asses...

The only logical explanation.

Yeah, ND engine clearly was never intended for use outside of PS consoles. But so was GOW engine and they did a decent job porting it.

Alex said that this game has similar performance on 3060 as Metro Exodus EE with RT:

And 3060 can't even do 2x performance vs. PS4

I think they deserve some special award for making PS4 game perform like that.

Why is Alex running the game with DLAA when trying to compare it to PS4?

DLAA is going to have a MASSIVE impact on performance, and PS4 did not have a solution even remotely comparable to that in place.

PS5 is a more than 2x more powerful than PS4 Pro and game performs exactly 2x better in patched PS4 version (at same 1440p res). PS5 version with unlocked framerate shows bigger difference.

4k 60/120fps was never possible.

DLAA performs worse than same resolution with TAA but it's not a massive difference.

Image quality is absolutely jaw dropping at 4k/DLAA Transformer model/max settings:

Holding damn near a locked 120fps so far on my rig as well.

The ps5 pro is about a 3000 euro's cheaper right now in europe compared to the 5090. And it runs it more stable.

If pc gaming wasn't fucked enough already

Actually going to be interesting to see how Daniel Owen and NXgamer's tests of this game go.

I have a feeling Alex is being a crybaby here for multiple reasons.

To be honest I think he is overreacting sometimes, Monster Hunter video was fucking useless. NXG did a really good video on this game explaining many things while Alex was just complaining.
