Divinity Original Sin 2 review thread

I played some of Divinity 1 but didn't beat it.

Should I go back and finish that or just jump into 2?

Just jump into 2. And if you're invested enough after go back to the previous game. Both games have great combat systems however the first lacks a narrative to easily invest to, atleast for my part. And the cast of characters for 2 is great rivaling of not topping that of BioWare games.

Yeah, it may still change as it's a very long game. But damn, isn't it impressive?

That's an incredible claim. Any Bioware fans out there to back this up? And by Bioware games, do you mean their CRPG's, or their actual modern games?

Their modern games. Likeability is subjective of course but all characters came with great voice actors/actresses regardless but the most important thing is that they have agency. Unlike modern BioWare with Dragon Age and Mass Effect franchises, the cast in D:OS2 have their own goals that may or may not conflict with your own. If push comes to shove they will ditch you and perhaps make an enemy out of you as well. I also might be a tad biased for Sebille who shares the same VA for the british female Inquisitor in DA:I.

How are the controls for the original Divinity on the PS4? I tried getting into it on the PC but dropped it. I may be up for its comfy couch experience.
I don't know about your set up but you should have the Enhanced Edition due to having the game on PC, and that has controller support. You could always just save the money and give it another go with your PC on your TV.

I'll back it up. The cast is really great. They all have super interesting stories that tie very heavily into the core plotline, likely an artifact because you are most likely going to be picking one of them as your PC.

Where it's better than Bioware is there is a legit competitive aspect between the cast. Without going into spoilers your interests don't' align with your companions and that can cause actual in game consequences. Your party does not worship you like you are the golden child, standing behind you no matter what. It's kind of like the Rivalry system in Dragon Age 2 but done so much better.

It's actually more reminiscent of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 Bioware companions back when they would actually leave the party if you pissed them off enough.

Where it lacks is the banter. There is very, very little inter party banter. The same goes for having companions interject in conversations with other NPCs. It's pretty rare.

If Larian ever does an Enhanced Edition it would be awesome if they could add banter and injections.

My second fav game this year so far, first P5 dethroned BOTW and now this took BOTW's number 2 spot.

I'm really happy this is doing well.

For me the best is still Yakuza 0, followed by D:OS2, and then P5. I still have to play BOTW and Nier but I don't see the rankings changing.

Also, I posted this in the sales thread but D:OS2 hit 500K on Steam, not counting GoG.

Well, totally unexpected, i loved DOS but they managed to do a WAY BETTER game with Divinity Original Sin 2, this year will be hard to choose my personal GOTY, between NieR: Automata, PUBG, Divinity: Original Sin 2 and hopefully Wolfenstein 2 and The Evil Within 2.

I've not played Yakuza but there's no way anything short of TNC dethrones P5 for me.

When does this come to PS4?

Or does it have the gamepad controls from the PS4 version of DoS1 built in to the PC version?

Yes the game has the controller support built in.

They haven't announced a PS4 version yet but it's pretty likely it's coming.

For those almost done or beat it.. Is it replayable? Do you have a desire to do it all over again?

I think I'm midway through the final act and I'm definitely still hooked. Gameplay is sublime, characters are really enjoyable, and the narrative want me to relive/replay those epic/revelation moments with different characters/party setup.

It's a masterpiece RPG that let's you legit roleplay in the game yet carries modern gameplay mechanics akin to XCOM

The cast is very good, but no it is not even that close to Baldur's Gate 2. And the villain(s) of Original Sin 2 are but a speck of dirt on the wind compared to Irenicus. OS2's greatest strength I believe is that it does basically everything very well or better. But in individual areas, I don't think it really surpasses the old classics.

Definitely. There have been several moments where I've genuinely felt like an outsider looking in on important going's on, especially since I'm playing Lohse, who is basically a nobody before being shipped off to Fort Joy. Playing the game again as Fane or Red Prince seems like they would be very different experiences.

Wow this came out of nowhere.

How does it compares to Witcher 3? I dropped TW3 after 10 hours of play because its open world and quest structure is too 'heavy' for me, im too old with not enough time to explore it.

Does Sin 2 have less travel time between areas, and does the story have lesser fetch quest down times?

XCOM, you say? I am a huge fan of the gameplay mechanics in XCOM.

I haven't played a proper CRPG from beginning to end since Planescape: Torment back in what? 1999? Something like that. Anyway, CRPGs in general aren't something I naturally gravitate towards, but everything I read tells me this game is a gem. It also appears to have all of the modern niceties I have grown accustomed to such as full gamepad support, full voice acting, etc. Yeah, I'm thinking I should probably give it a shot.

Finished it today, definitely worthy of the praise. My only complaints are either technical, like broken side quests, or very minor, like a few frustrating puzzles/battles (mostly in the forth quarter of the game). Most of these problem will be fixed in time, surely until the inevitable console release. Fantastic experience, looking forward to replaying it with the other companions.

Mhmm, watch the game's combat trailer to get a good idea of what you're to expect.

W3 and DOS2 are two different beasts to be able to compare imo.

That being said, looking at all the reviews, you won't go wrong with either game.

No. It's an action point based system which is used both for movement and skills.

If you hate the combat system in this game, you hate fun. Just give it a try!

can only move characters when its their turn and it takes action points to move and use skills so you have to pick and choose what you do to spend those points
if it sounds like its too much for you try and play the game on explorer mode makes the combat trivial but you still get great story telling
