It definitely looks like it'll take me a while to learn the mechanics, but I appreciate the complexity and scope of what they've presented in the video. I suppose a similar video about XCOM 2: WOTC might seem equally daunting to someone who's never played XCOM.

That being said, looking at all the reviews, you won't go wrong with either game.

DOS2, being an iso-crpg, does looks more tactical, less actiony, more party based adventure. TW3 is a real time sink going around the world.

You can skip Returns -it's decent but it mostly built the foundation for the next two which are superior- and play Dragonfall & Hong Kong.

I'm still in the middle of the game (50 hours) and I'm already thinking and planning my next playthrough. There are so many possibilities for the companions, story paths, how you tackle the quests, party compositions, etc. Not to mention the Game Master mode and custom maps from the modding community...

You can play this game forever.

It's great to hear both about reviews and sales. An isomeric niche CRPG got 94% metacritic and already sold 600K copies at essentially full price. That's pretty amazing and good for Larian. The game is absolutely worth it.

Also, everyone buy Shadowrun Dragonfall and HK, as both are overlooked and underrated games with interesting storylines, great setting and pretty awesome characters.

Its between Yakuza Zero and D:OS2 for me. Never would have expected the result at the end of 2016.

Also early on seems to confuse Shrieker and Gheist as he is describing / talking about big Act 1 fight. Small nitpick, but eh.

Gaming journos only pretend to like Dark Souls because the public reception forced them to. Because they would get told to git gud otherwise and they'd be competely against the player reception of the games. Therefore every review of every Souls game almost reads the same and precisely 100% of them has the line "its hard, but fair".


Right after Dark Souls 2 released and gaming journos wrote how the game is hard but fair, i counted 15 games released in the same time span where it was too hard and that was a bad thing. I stoped keeping count after that. In reality i suspect most journos hate Souls because its so damn hard and they need to repeate scenes dozens or hundreds of times, while needing to keep a deadline.

What you see here, with Kotaku, thats the real gaming journo in every game ever that demands a little extra of them.

No, it isn't some written to stone rule of law that every game release has to obey in order to be "full priced". It's common norm, but if developer / publisher decides that e.g. 45 is full price for their game then that is full price for their game.

If we want split hairs and do some semantics then we would argue that full price of something like CoD is closer to 130-150, because you need that season pass if you want keep game relative and be able to play with majority of community.

I never found the difficulty of combat put me off the first game. It was spending an hour in the first village and getting swamped down by about 23 quests in an awful quest tracker/log. Doing literally anything would start a new quest.

Everything else about the game was awesome. My only complaint with quest progression was that when I knew what to do or who to accuse

Is Explorer really that easy? I'm on Classic, and the game stopped being hard at around the middle of chapter 2. I'm on the final chapter now, and let me tell you: if you survive the growing years your characters turn into engines of destruction.

Dark Souls is not difficult in the same way as D:OS2.

Souls games always give you options if you can't beat a particular boss. There are usually NPCs that you can summon to help you, or you can summon other players, which makes boss fights considerably easier. Even if you don't resort to summoning, you can always increase your stats by grinding more souls/blood echoes, which are for all intents and purposes an infinite resource. The game never stops you from progressing.

In Divinity: Original Sin 2, however, it is entirely possible, as a result of poor stat distribution, skill choices and lack of synergy, to end up in a state where a fight becomes practically impossible, without any means of making it easier or grinding for more xp, at which point your only option is to restart the game. The free respec option does alleviate this, but you don't gain access to it until act 2, which can be a good 20+ hours into the game.

TL;DR Comparing Divinity: Original Sin 2's difficulty to Dark Souls is intellectually lazy whataboutism.
