Holy shit why have I not seen the 5th -> 6th regeneration before... That's hilarious. Did the 6th Doctor ever stop being such a dickhead or did he carry on like that?

EDIT: Oh. Wow.

"Three I's in one sentence make you a rather egotistical young lady?" Yeah, he got less dickish, but still a bit abrasive.

And the missing episodes stuff just blows my mind, after years of resignation that they were probably gone. One site said Marco Polo had already been submitted to Apple for iTunes distribution once the finds were announced.

Can't believe they're going to dare desecrate Open All Hours :(

Oh Matt, those trousers are hideous.

They're just trying to evoke the first Doctor a lot, I think, based on the spoilers, as well.

I think it's a shame that he's going out in neither of his 'main' costumes, though. This is a different coat, a different waistcoat, different trousers.

What if that's Capaldi's outfit?

The Time of the Doctor synopsis: Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them – the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.

Someone should make a thread. Also look closely and you can see Capaldi
in the flames
.

Something about Ronnie Barker rolling in his grave. Jesus christ have some respect.

While Barker was great the shows production had little to do with him. The original writer returned for this and so did David Jason. Something like this is a great way to remember Barker. I'm actually really looking forward to it.

What if that's Capaldi's outfit?

Nah. I mean, the overall 'language' of that outfit is the same as Smith's current one. The shape of it, the cut of it. It'd be too close, thanks to that, for Capaldi. Plus he allegedly hasn't picked yet, a statement from Moffat I actually believe in this instance.

They really love referring to the Doctor's companion as his 'best friend'. He must be constantly re-organising his top friends on MySpace.

Predictions.

The bell ringing that draws everyone to the planet is the cloister bell from the tardis echo'd throughout the universe.

Crazy, Only in moffat world speculation

Trenzalore is the echo of Gallifrey imprinting itself on our universe, The silence are time lords. The cracks are caused by them forcing themselves into the world.

Don't spoiler-tag personal speculation. There's no reason to confuse shit any further when the thread is full of legitimate spoilers hidden behind tags.

That and your spec is pretty cool. The idea that Gallifrey is "echoing through" into our universe, and the Silence are Time Lords is fun as hell.

Except it does contain leaked episode spoilers so if i posted without tags people would bitch. I said speculation before hand. Not my problem if people opt to not read that.

No it doesn't. At least, not the second bit. It contains no spoilers. It's your personal speculation. None of the details contained within it aren't known thanks to either a) the episode that just came out or b) the promo image/synopsis posted on the very same page.

I don't see him. I feel so dumb.

Nah, it's pretty subtle. Look at the fire. Specifically, around the Cyberman's head.

More Colin Baker salt via Blogtor Who. He has a lovely dedication to the series, but ever since what happened to him in his era happened it seems he can't not view everything as a personal slight. It's sad.

You know, all or none - that's what I would have thought. I know Tom did it for longer than anybody else and he's the oldest Doctor but by asking him and not us, it makes you feel like a second-class citizen, a bit.

I'm so glad Peter had the idea of doing our thing. Because it was there for the fans. I know the population at large don't care if all the old Doctors are in it or not but I think there's enough Doctor Who fans who would have loved to have seen us in it. Even though I don't look the same, none of us look exactly the same, but I look very much not the same.

Even if there was a way to get a small part in it, which we would have done with very good grace because we care about giving back because we've been given so much over the years by the fans - their unending devotion, which has been fantastic. It would have been nice to give back to them but it wasn't to happen.

They've also got a lovely new interview with Moffat where he talks about trying to put Time War plans past RTD and getting knocked back!
It's difficult with Russell 'cos he doesn't like spoilers. Even when we worked together on the show we tried not to spoil each other. I did at one point [contact RTD], we had to co-ordinate a bit around some stuff and I did tell him, just because I'm possibly treading on your toes, this is roughly, very roughly what we're going to do. I think he wrote back saying, 'I read half your email and I stopped!'

He did know about Elizabeth I, I love that gag in The Shakespeare Code where that happens. I love it when David Tennant walks out and does a bit about Queen Bess. I thought it was hilarious. And I kept it going in The Beast Below, and I wrote a line into Amy's Choice. To top it off and say that's what she was, a Zygon, I think is fun.

In general, he doesn't want to know. He always gets in touch after an episode airs to enthuse away like a fanboy. In years to come, when it's not me [as showrunner] I'll hand it all over and not want to be spoiled.

Trenzalor and Cracks being part of the Xmas episode

I wish Billie Piper got more dialogue. She was excellent as The Moment, to the point where you've almost forgotten she was once Rose Tyler by the end of her first scene with John Hurt. I love her "No More" dance.
Yeah, she was fantastic. One of my favorite parts of the special.

That was where I was kinda like "it's not gonna be THAT kind of special." That probably should have been a moment of serious portent, and instead, Billie Piper is playing a computer program that likes being a smartass. The rest of the episode ended up being MOSTLY a comedy, and I really appreciated that more than anything else.

Well, that's the beginning of the whole conceit of the episode: that the War Doctor has no fucking clue what he's about to do. The Moment knows full well it can't ever be deployed, that no-one can seriously bear that guilt, and it's there to ensure no-one ever will.

It's openly mocking him not because it's a smartass, but because it's looked at the Doctor's justification and his "no more"s and knows it's all poppycock. So, yeah, amusing, but not just for the sake of comedy.

Best bit of the whole special was at the beginning. We were in a cinema that was packed! This was the Monday viewing so I presume the majority had watched it at the Sunday viewings but never the less this little cinema in Perth was still overflowing with people. They were playing ads before the movie came on.
They had this ad for Doctor Who in concert. Basically live music with a full orchestra and Daleks and all that walking around the stage. Everyone was getting excited and then it flashed...
"Only available in Sydney and Melbourne."
And the whole cinema gave out cries of disbelief and started booing the screen.

It was brilliant.

Really like that now we have all of the regens, though a shame that Eccleston wouldn't appear in the 50th for a proper regen. Still, nifty.

Though I started watching Dr. Who in the late 70s I still have a fondness for Peter Davison -- he even got me to eat celery as a child.

I'm not saying your interpretation is wrong, or invalid. I like it - but she IS mocking him because she's a smartass, too. It's not an either/or thing. You can teach someone a thing that they absolutely need to know while still poking fun/having fun with them.

That's what I appreciated about the episode. It absolutely could have chosen a different tone to work from - and it very much did not. That scene was where it crystallized for me, and it made me smile quite a bit.

At this point I honestly would not have minded if they had regenerated Hurt into Tennant and nullified the 9th Doctor. Hurt could be the new official 9th. The 9th never happened.

I mean, part of that is just Doctor Who in general. Arguably the shows peaks have always involved comedy of some kind, so any other approach for this episode didn't even come to mind.

Plus "The Night of the Doctor" had enough tragedy for the 50th. :p

Just got back from the 3D showing at my local theater. Even having seen it twice on Saturday and a third time on Sunday (both at home), I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm also convinced that a good deal of the big "action" styled shots were designed specifically to take advantage of the 3D.

Also 10 and 11's pre-movie 3D glasses intro was hilarious.

That was an amazing episode.

I have a question though:

So, did the 3 doctors really change the past, or is this how it always happened? Meaning, did the War Doctor ever destroy the planet? Or does he just think that because he did not retain memory of the events?

Just got back from the cinema and although I had already seen it on Saturday, it was a great experience to see it in a room full of Whovians. Naturally Tennent got some big cheers but the loudest cheer came for (surprisingly) Capaldi.

Lots of fun and a lots of great t-shirts to be seen. :p

This is how it always happened, yes. History wasn't altered.

This is how I interpret it. Because until now we've only seen it trough the eyes of 9 and 10.

Also seeing it in the theater a second time was really fantastic. Though It still bugs me that the story was a bit all over the place at times.

Anyone know when the soundtrack will be released btw? It was superb as always.

I haven't seen the 50th yet, but does it answer this?
Name of the Doctor spoiler:
How does Clara and the Doctor get from where they were at the end of the episode to where they are at the beginning of the 50th?

It seems these are the 6 major points people keep getting hung up on out there in the world wide internets:

1) The Doctor never used the Moment: Gallifrey was always frozen, never destroyed.
2) The Doctor, at some point in the far-flung future, retires and becomes The Curator
3) Peter Capaldi is NOT the guy who says "No sir, All THIRTEEN."
4) Billie Piper, despite the what it says in the end credits, is NOT playing Rose Tyler/Bad Wolf, but is playing The Moment.
5) No, we never see the ultimate resolution of the Human/Zygon negotiations.
6) The Numbering remains the same - Hurt just slots in as "The War Doctor," between Eight and Nine.

There's not an absolute ton of new music - about thirty minutes' worth or thereabouts if I had to guess - so I imagine they'll bundle it together with the music from Christmas at some point in the new year, as Christmas will probably be another 30 of new stuff.

A very large chunk of the music from this episode is available on soundtracks for series 5-7, at any rate as they reused stuff as they often do, so go seek it out! I was trying to work out if the Dalek track they use is a new recording or not - it's the same piece from Series 4, but I can't work out if it's a new recording/orchestration or no...
