Doctor Who 50th Anniversary |OT| Splendid Chap, All Of Them

I'm sure Barrowman would've made the time. He just did the Torchwood series last year I think? That show's been put on hiatus though.

It does seem like Moffat's hesitant to play with too many of Davies pieces. He wanted Billie Pepper because she's a fan favorite but even then made sure not to associate her too closely with her Davies created characters.

Now that he's been mentioned, it does seem odd that Captain Jack wasn't in this at all beyond a single reference. Was John Barrowman unavailable?
He was in the Five(ish) Doctors, so who knows.

And the footage of Christopher Eccleston was just re-used from Series 1, right?
Yeah. I remembered the line but I can't remember where it came from.

Is it meant to be ambiguous?
Is Tom Baker playing the 4th Doctor, or is he just playing a whimsical curator? I don't follow Old Who so I was thinking there might be some giveaways that I might not notice.
Leading theory is that it's:
Tom Baker playing the Nth Doctor who has decided to curate a museum, possibly because he's already saved every day in time at that point

Another random question from a NuWho'er:

Were regenerations ever shown on-screen or dealt with in plots prior to the new series? Was The Doctor ever mortally wounded in one scene, and then turned up with a new actor in the next scene? Or was it more just that they started a new season with a new actor, and gave some throwaway explanation about why he regenerated?

I think nearly every regeneration has (as of the 50th) been shown onscreen except for Colin Baker's. You can find them all on YouTube.

Colin Baker's is seen. I mean, they got Sylvester McCoy in a wig to do it, but the regeneration effect is there, and Sylvester McCoy's face appears at the end of it. If McGann into a photo of Hurt counts, and Hurt into about a quarter of a CG-morph of Eccleston counts, than McCoy in a wig with a glowy-face probably counts.

I think the only one that might fall under the original question from Border is Troughton to Pertwee, as I think that's just Troughton fading to black while spinning on a turntable and shouting "NO!"

Haha, the Troughton to Pertwee one is pretty hilariously dated.

"Paul McGann - Christopher Eccleston: No official regeneration exists. (This video features a fanmade regeneration created by Mulett.)"

They obviously never shot McGann-Eccleston. Pretty cool how they were able to work this into the 50th Special. I wonder if RTD was really thinking that far ahead, or if they just didn't want to bother starting NuWho with a confusing regeneration.

Also, Baker's cameo is not really ambiguous at all. If there's ambiguity, it seems to be played up by fans who don't want to take the answer provided in the text of the show at face value (seriously, I've heard about three podcasts where the hosts simply refuse to believe because it couldn't possibly be that easy)

But it reads loud & clear to me that at some point in the future, the Doctor finally retires, with the ability to control his regenerations, down to being able to choose which face (and how old that face can look) at will. When he retires, he ceases being "The Doctor" and is now "The Curator," which is the job assigned to him by Queen Elizabeth in the episode :)

I'm not sure how exactly that would mesh with The Doctor's grave at Trenzalore. Though that's not really a plot thread I am fond of, and I imagine it will be retconned or explained away somehow.

Seriously. It's like people walking out of The Empire Strikes Back saying "So what does everyone think Vader's relationship to Luke is? They made it really ambiguous, but I think he's secretly Obi-Wan's twin brother who went bad and murdered Luke's father." It's not ambiguous. They tell you what the deal is straight away!

Jack hasnt been seen since the Tenth Doctor.

From what I've read, Moffat intended for Jack to be in "A Good Man Goes To War", but filming commitments for Torchwood prevented it.

Some of the lines from Vastra in that episode felt like they could have come from Jack, after all.

The full plot synopsis from GB has made its way into the pages of The Sun. Disastrous.

Hope this changes the spoiler culture of that board, because it's getting insufferable.

The Sun supposedly spoils the Christmas special today, so you might want to avoid buying or reading it if you don't already avoid it like the vile piece of shit it is.

The problem here is not with not with the Sun- well, no more than normal.

The problem here is fans, drunk on their own power, not being able to keep their bloody mouths shut.

"I am your father" is a little more blunt than "in years to come you might find yourself revisiting a few [faces]"

On first viewing, I honestly wasn't sure whether to take it as a forth wall-breaking *wink wink* cameo, or a literal implication that the Doc would become Tom Baker again in the future.

Since then I've decided on the latter in dialogue with fans... But it wasn't "spelled out" in no uncertain terms.

I think they had to keep it a little ambiguous in dialogue, only because thinking about the mechanics of future contuinity takes away from the emotional intention of the cameo.

On Jack; they can't go through it recycling companions every few episode from every era. Otherwise they'd end up with Journey's End every series, and it'd get tiring. It takes the special nature away from it if they're always on hand.

Compared to most TV show communities the Who community is pretty good with spoilers, really. Some people like to read and like to know. I don't see why people should be told not to share or banned from doing so. If Cardiff wants to stop them, they need to try to stop them at the source. It's like saying people like Verendus and the like should stop posting inside information or leaking NPD figures to GAF because it'll end up on Kotaku.

EDIT: Okay, so NOW I think it's bad, as Matt Smith's actual last words as the Doctor have been posted. Posting dialogue verbatim is too far. Also, sounds even worse than "I don't want to go!" Hooray!

I don't watch the show too often but recently I came upon one where he stated "rule 1: the Doctor lies" - a fake grave to confuse his enemies (or companions, or himself...) sounds consistent with that.

John Hurt put the other two's silly quirks in their place - I hope Capaldi honors his attitude.
Speaking of which, it was odd not seeing him in the final reunion shot - maybe they're still thinking of a distinct outfit style for him? (I think rolled up sleeves would give a nice practical vibe to a semi-formal outfit like most wore, but then again, british weather...)

Unfortunately, his headstone is a bit problematic in that regard.

The final shot was about capping off 50 years of Doctor history.

Despite Capaldi's time-bending cameo, he has not actually entered the Doctor's story yet....

The post above about it being 50 years cap-off is true - he's the start of the next, not part of what this was celebrating, so it makes sense -- but also he hasn't picked his costume, no. Moffat said after the disaster of his contributions to Matt's costume (all of which ended up rejected) he's leaving Capaldi to it. The tweed and stuff was only picked 3 days(!) before they started filming. It's sort of tradition it all falls together very late in the game.

Various lines from the modern Dr Who seem to state that she's dead.

Well, the indication under RTD is that all Time Lords were recalled to Gallifrey when the war got bad, basically a draft, anybody out in the universe was ordered home or picked up because they needed the bodies and the TARDISes for war. So regardless of what happens with her in 8th Doctor Big Finish stories and whatnot (as they do meet again there), the official word was that between 8 and 9 she ended up back on Gallifrey. Same's true of Romana, who was trapped in N-Space the last time we saw her in Old Who, but who we know from expanded universe stuff was Lord President for at least part of the war before being pushed from her position for being too soft, possibly in favour of the revived Rassilon.

Prior to last week this meant all these characters were certainly dead, but now...? Hmmm.

A tweet that I don't think's been posted:

@mediaguardian: #dayofthedoctor cinema release takes $10.2m globally in 3 days.

(It goes on to talk about the US taking, which has already been discussed).

I believe that the traditional budget for Doctor Who was £1M/episode, and I suspect that's been reduced a bit. Even more notably, if we take Moffat at face value:

We were making a feature-length Doctor Who on the schedule and budget for an hour. We’re doing it in 3D on the budget for 2D.

So... that's quite a lot of revenue for an expenditure of £1M.

And, to underline it: that revenue is not from the intended distribution method. That's an alternative revenue stream alone.

Interview, mainly about Billie Piper :

http://www.bbcamerica.com/anglophenia/2013/11/doctor-steven-moffat-explains-billie-pipers-role-50th/

“I thought the story of Rose, which was beautiful, was done,” he said. “I didn’t want to add to it, and I didn’t feel comfortable adding to it, really. That was always [former Doctor Who showrunner] Russell [T Davies]‘s story. But we did want Billie. And I liked the idea of bringing back the Bad Wolf version. The way Russell ended it in “The End of Time,” by just sort of looping it around, was perfect. I didn’t want to stick another bit of it in. That would be wrong. I just wanted to get Billie Piper, one of the absolute heroes of Doctor Who, back in the show, but without interfering with the story of Rose Tyler. I just thought I might spoil something. I might trip over my bootlaces doing that.”

I really miss her sometimes. She was a great ambassador for the show. Mainly because she seems insane.

If I'm not mistaken, in non-UK broadcasts there's a short extra part before each episode where she narrates (as Amy) the concept of the series for newcomers. Did they get rid of that part now that she's no longer in the series?

This to me is the best thing to come out of the 50th really. Finally an adventure for and about the Doctor and not companion-based, with quite possibly huge implications and possibilities.

edit:

Yes, even reruns have it removed (at least on Space, which used to have that intro bit for 5-7.0)

The more I saw of Karen in shows and interviews etc the less of an attraction there was. She is lovely and I do like a redhead, but I find her personality a bit grating and she rarely displayed any great talent in the show. She's in NTSF:SD:SUV:: now and, while she doesn't exactly have a great amount of time to display any skill there, she's still not exactly doing anything noteworthy. She definitely had some good moments on the whole, but even with the lack of development for Clara I've much more enjoyed Jenna on the show than Karen. Will be interesting to see whether she can pull off the role in GotG well.

It's on the Netflix episodes for Series 6, but not others.

I hope to God that they do. It was cool for the 1st episode, but REEEAALLLLLYYY fucking annoying for everyone after that.

There's all this shit going on about e-mails getting sent namedropping Gallifrey Base.

What's this about "Drunk with power?"

Dude found spoilers. Dude posted spoilers.

This is basic. Considering this thread has been vampirically FEASTING off spoilers since its inception, I don't know why suddenly this is a terrible thing. Just because the Sun ran them? Eh. That's on The Sun. Dude didn't MAKE the Sun do that. The Sun did that on its own. ANY paper could do that on their own if they wanted. It's not like the entertainment writers don't know about these things, don't know about these places. They exist for every show/movie, they have similar fanbases, all doing the same things. Hell, if they wanted, they could have taken spoilers FROM HERE. And then NeoGAF would be the hive of scum and villainy, wouldn't it.

If the Sun wanted to spoil ANY show, it could. That isn't a mark on the fanbase of those shows. It's a mark on the Sun.

I've read that Moffat wanted Capt. Jack for "A Good Man Goes to War," but he was on a project that wouldn't give him the time to do it. The Arrow producers have stated in interviews that if Barrowman got a guest spot on Doctor Who, they would schedule him around that.
