Doctor Who 50th Anniversary |OT| Splendid Chap, All Of Them

The Series Seven thread keeps getting bumped, and I assume that's just the general "List of Doctor Who episodes that devolves into complaining about Moaning Myrtle the knob-slobbing Pavement Slab" so I'm checking to see if anything even remotely interesting/noteworthy has happened?

I heard the trailer was supposed to have been dropped yesterday? Of course, it wasn't.

I saw both this and the other thread at the top of my subscription list and was convinced that the trailer had dropped.

See what you did, BBC? I'm sad now.

Speaking of The Master, I'd like to see them bring him back for Capaldi. I read that Moffat doesn't like the character much but really, just do it.

At least if he does and Moffat pulls the same random powers bullshit he did in Flesh and Stone (and with the Whispermen as well) it can't be any worse then in The End of Time.

That got me all tingly. Now I want to watch some 6th doctor episodes.

Check out his radio dramas instead. The Big Finish stuff benefitted him and McGann more than any other Doctor.

"Dalek" is based on an audio drama originally written for the Sixth, called "Jubilee," which is actually even more screwed up than "Dalek" was.

It seems like Moffat doesn't like bringing back any characters besides River Song. I would of liked to see the Master, Captain Jack and Martha Jones in his run with Smith and none of that ever happened (though I know Captain Jack was in the works to be in A Good Man Goes to War but it didn't work out).

Said this on here a while ago but I'd love to see John Hannah as The Master vs Capaldi's Doctor.

I've been thinking of ways to get Hannah vs. Capaldi as well.

It would be a lot of fun.

If they can get Craig Ferguson in the episode, I may orgasm.

No 50th trailer on the series seven box set is disappointing. We need something.

I'll actually have a 3D TV by the time this airs. Anyway to watch the broadcast in 3D in the states? or will I have the wait for the 3D blu-ray release?

THERE'S A NEW TRAILER

p01hmv9n.jpg

Coming soon.

But not tonight.

They've specially written and filmed a trailer, currently in post production, all new stuff never seen before.

But tonight, they're revealing the ident for the 50th anniversary and THE HASHTAG. Exciting stuff. Before/After Atlantis, 8:25 BBC One.

Woo, it begins! I see Daleks - could this be the rumoured
Paul McGann minisode
?

Is Atlantis supposed to be any good? I might watch it tonight if I've got nothing better to do, but those kind of BBC-shows never really seem that interesting (can't stand something like Merlin).

There's a thought,
Mcgann
said on twitter he wouldn't be in the 50th specifically, and if it's specially written, what if the trailer is a minisode? Also I guess this is what the dubbing was for the other day.

Atlantis just seems like a replacement for Merlin, I'll give it a go, I liked Merlin at first but it got boring.

Picture is from the trailer filming, to clarify. Not to rule other speculation about its contents, mind.

So to my own speculation! But I would presume not throwing in minisode style stuff as it'd be a short trail for TV. Extra Doctor is a bit of a faff for that. Plus, if it's Moffat, it'll be a kid reading some poem over footage of the Daleks. :p

I wouldn't expect a ton from the trailer, especially if it's filmed entirely separately from the episode. They've done this before, separate trailer filming - specifically on Series 4, where they filmed the trailer a month or something after the series wrapped: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pkgVNbg4Zo

They also did similar for Series 3/5, though these were filmed during the actual series filming, so were a bit more content-rich.
Series 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1rkE6eruh4
Series 5: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpbmMhNe6aA

Willing to be this'll be a voiceover banging on about Time War stuff.

This trailer better be pretty amazing then.. I'd rather have footage from the actual special. Why not release that comic con trailer then if they are going with this first?

If I had to guess, until two weeks before when we'll start getting 30 second TV trails the only trailer we're likely to get will probably be something as part of Comic Relief or something.

I was holding out hope for a cinema trailer, but again... the Series 3/4/5 "filmed outside of series" trailers were all done that way, differently, so they'd be cinema-friendly, so I bet this is the same case.

Forgot about these, they're nice examples of teaser trailers...

but I'd accept anything at this point, even if it was just John Hurt blowing his nose for a few seconds.

HNNNNNNGGGGG. My body is ready. I'll have to wait until someone puts it online, since I live in the states. :/

True enough, but you know the BBC. This way they get to put out a press release about how they're competing with the big boys with a specially produced trailer, and all that.

Atlantis just started, and they showed the Doctor Who Anniversary ident before it. Really nothing special though. It simply showed '#savetheday' in gold letters in front of a black background, and you heard Matt Smith saying 'The Day of the Doctor' in a rapey voice. Nothing more than that.

I'm watching that Atlantis-show right now, and maybe it's better that they didn't attach the DW-trailer to this. This is exceptionally bad.

I don't know if the message from earlier today meant that there will be another ident at the end of this or if they're just showing the same one again, but I'm not going to watch this. I'm not expecting much, but I'll just leave the tv on while I do something else. Maybe I'll catch it.

It'll be nothing though.

The HIGNFY-trailer aired! No Tom Baker though, just the regulars in a Baker-scarf and hat coming out of the Tardis, making a couple of time travel-jokes.

Oh, and that second ident. Same gold letters, the date this time with the 11 made from the Tardis (as in, the DW-logo from the Matt Smith-intro). So yeah, it was nothing.

I just saw that too, thought it was pretty funny (will be watching, HIGNFY always makes me laugh.)

The hashtag revealed sucked though :lol

Wait, so they're filming a trailer, they're not gonna cut together existing footage, but instead make a 2 minute short?

I guess that makes sense if you're going for maximum security - not a single frame of footage is going to be seen until the episode premieres.

Pretty good plan, if they had not already shown some footage to people who then provided detailed descriptions of that footage.

Transmission info:

BBC Worldwide today announced that the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, will be broadcast simultaneously to millions of viewers worldwide in a global simulcast on 23rd November 2013. This is an exciting first for the show.

From Canada to Colombia, Brazil to Botswana and Myanmar to Mexico, fans in at least 75 countries spanning six continents will be able to enjoy the episode in 2D and 3D at the same time as the UK broadcast, with more countries expected to be confirmed within the next month. The US, Australia and Canada have also signed up for the simulcast which will be shown in numerous countries across Europe, Latin America and Africa.

On top of the worldwide TV broadcast, hundreds of cinemas in the UK and across the world also plan to screen the hotly anticipated special episode simultaneously in full 3D, giving fans the opportunity to make an event of the occasion and be part of a truly global celebration for the iconic British drama series. Details about tickets for the anniversary screening will be announced in due course.

Steven Moffat, current showrunner for Doctor Who and Executive Producer of the 50th Anniversary episode adds: “The Doctor has always been a time traveller - now he's travelling time zones. On the 23rd of November, it won't be the bad guys conquering the Earth - everywhere it will be The Day of the Doctor!”

The free-to-air 3D coverage will be available to those with access to a 3D TV set and to the BBC’s HD Red Button service. This is part of the BBC’s two-year trial experimenting with 3D production and distribution, which has also included selected coverage from Wimbledon 2012 and the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Day of the Doctor, the 50th Anniversary special of Doctor Who, will be simultaneous broadcast with the UK in the following countries:

Europe
Germany (Fox), Finland (YLE), Poland (BBC Entertainment), Russia (Karousel and NKS)

North America
USA (BBC America), Canada (Space)

Latin America (on BBC Entertainment and BBC HD)
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela

It was probably wishful thinking that an Irish channel would get in on the fun, since none of them air the show. Still, I'll be watching on BBC One.

Steven Moffat has explained why The Day of the Doctor will be more than just a “parade of the greatest hits” and how he hopes to ensure the show stays alive for the next 50 years.

In an extract from The Doctor: His Lives And Times, Moffat says: “You’re going to get every kind of retrospective in the world when it comes to the 50th and you’re not going to be short. To make this show just a walk-down, just a tribute to the past, a backward glance, would be like one of those end of year shows: ‘That was the year that was! Look back and feel slightly old and sad.’ Don’t do that! Of course it’s a celebration of the legend of Doctor Who, but more importantly it’s ensuring there’s going to be a 100th anniversary.

He adds: “It’s a hugely important story to the Doctor. That was my mission statement. Very, very rarely in Doctor Who does a story matter to him very much at all. Obviously he runs around, defeats mutants, meets a space badger, saves a civilisation, causes epiphanies to happen to everyone he meets, rushes back to the TARDIS and forgets everything about it. If you asked him he might have a vague memory of the badger, and that’s it.

“My intent was to move it forward, to have a show that’s equally about the next fifty years of Doctor Who. Attaching the word fifty to anything… I almost tried to rip the logo off saying ‘Why is that good?! That show you’re watching is really old!’ Why is that a good thing to say? It’s about proving we’ve got many, many more stories to tell, and in a way, being able to say the story really starts here. People ask me how am I going to please the regular audience and I say I’m actually on a recruitment drive to get the people who’ve never watched it before to watch Doctor Who. That’s what matters. There are some people out there who’ve never watched it before, God help them. You want them to think, ‘Oh I’ve been missing out, I’m going to join in now.’

“If you’re going to celebrate Doctor Who, you’re celebrating the Doctor – well, why not tell his story? What’s it like for him? What’s it like being him, what defines him, what defines what he is? How do you make that might moment in his life? What would be the Doctor’s most important day, what would be the show that would change him as a person for ever, alter the course of his life?

“That’s what’s big enough to do for the 50th, rather than just a parade of the greatest hits. Never mind that space badger one; this is the adventure that he really remembers, and thinks, ‘That was the day everything changed.’”
