Doctor Who 50th Anniversary |OT| Splendid Chap, All Of Them

Thought it looked great and was very effective in Name of the Doctor, but it'd be a bit naff to do it twice back-to-back. The lustre of that is gone.

We already know that Kate Stewart and UNIT summon the Doctor to the National Gallery on behalf of the queen/the crown - this dialogue was heard on-set from afar when they did public filming in London, though reports on the exact contents of the dialogue vary because people were so far away. Everyone present appears to agree on the point of him being summoned to the gallery, though. Prior to us even knowing that, Matt Smith gave a clue - "Paintings!" That makes me think it might be something vaguely Dorian Gray-like, and we'll see all-new portraits of every Doctor from the past. That'll probably be our look at and tribute to the older Doctors.

As an aside, I think either 1) A portrait of Hurt will 'pop' into existence alongside the other Doctors thanks to the events of Name of the Doctor, which is why UNIT summons him or 2) the solution to the problem will involve Ten/Eleven reconciling with Hurt's Doctor and what he did, which perhaps might involve 'allowing' him to stand alongside the others in the portraits. That's pure speculation on my part, mind.

Hurt as the villain of the episode could be interesting.

There really is no other fitting villain for the Doctor to face down for the 50th than a darker version of himself, with some Daleks on the side. Hurt and the Time War provide all that, it's very fertile ground, really.

I don't imagine in a million years he'll be an outright villain, just doing some bad stuff 'for the greater good', a few rungs down the ladder still from when the Tenth Doctor lost it a bit in The Waters of Mars and the unfilled stretch of lore until the Ood snap him out of it in the opening of The End of Time.

these may or may not be bad quality shots from the trailer.

John Hurt talks 50th:

Regarding his part in the upcoming special, Hurt stated: "Of course you have to remember that the Doctors are all one person, so I'm not outside of that."

Talking about his fellow onscreen Doctors, the Alien actor added: "I can't talk about it, but I will say I was really impressed when I did it. Both the previous doctors – Matt Smith and David Tennant – boy, are they good at it. Whoa-wee! They are so quick, and there's a huge amount of learning and no time to learn it in. All that fake scientific nonsense. Terribly difficult to learn."

And when asked about the fans, Hurt commented: "I thought they'd all be loonies, but they are absolutely, totally charming as anything. It's great fun. I'm not saying it's the healthiest thing – I don't know whether it is or isn't – but they are very charming."

Davison and McCoy are staging a mock protest about not being in the 50th.
barrowman is there too, supposedly.

Not sure what it's for.

Title of the episode is The Day of the Doctor.

Other programming:

• BBC Two lecture by Professor Brian Cox (The Power of Three) on the science behind Doctor Who.

• BBC Four will air a re-run of the first ever story. The four episodes are being shown in a restored format, not previously broadcast in the UK.

• BBC Two's The Culture Show will present Me, You and Doctor Who, with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet (name-checked in The Crimson Horror) exploring the cultural significance of Doctor Who.

• BBC Three will air several programmes whilst Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide is a starter for those less familiar with the show.

• Who Is The Doctor? is a 90-minute documentary from BBC Radio 2 using newly-recorded interviews and exclusive archive material.

This is making the rounds. Dunno if it's the actual poster, but if not - it's a pretty good run at it.

Somehow John Hurt now has David Tennant's hair.

Also, he's DEFINITELY wearing Nine's jacket and Eight's vest.

When did Jenna Louise Coleman drop the Louise from her name?

Under casual inspection... probably real. They haven't nailed Tennant's hair for his comeback to be honest, it was noticeable in the short video of him and Matt Smith being interviewed, and it's noticeable here.

The only thing I think makes it unreliable is...Bad Wolf. We going back to that again? I guess tying together that and the actions of John Hurt's Doctor would be interesting.

I hope that's real.

Getting really sick of the quiet around this.

That said, my suggestion is "no". The weird "Bad Wolf" just reeks of fandom. Hope I'm wrong.

The "Bad Wolf" reference is the only thing that makes me think it's fake

Yupp. Moffat's tried so very, very hard to distance himself from RTD's era, seems weird he'd pay such massive homage to it. That said, he's definitely going with the Time War, and RTD is hugely responsible for Doctor Who as it is today, it's not like he doesn't deserve reference.

It's just painfully obvious from all the rumors about this story we've heard that Eccleston should be on that poster too :'(

If Rose is back it makes sense to bring back Bad Wolf references. They're pretty integral to her entire run so far.

Poster is real. Looks nice. Still no trailer sadly. The mock protest is great.
Still holding out for Eccleston

You and me both, without any logic, proof, or hope. Would be the ultimate surprise, and there's got to be a few.

I would also settle for McGann.

If Hurt is 8.5 how weird would it be to not show his "creation", i.e. regeneration from McGann. Just as weird as not showing his regeneration into Eccleston I suppose :(

When did Jenna Louise Coleman drop the Louise from her name?

What if the John Hurt Doctor is an accumulation of all the bad and desperate characteristics of past Doctors?

I'm also wondering if this 75 minute special is... part one of a loose two-parter.

Meaning the story started in it doesn't ACTUALLY wrap up until the end of the Christmas Special, even if Matt Smith's chapter of it SHOULD end in the special proper.

I wonder if they'll have Capaldi interacting with the Doctors before he actually is regenerated.

The Valeyard, basically? I dunno if they'll go that far. And I don't even know if you can recast The Valeyard because he's only got the one incarnation - and we've already seen it back in the 80s.

But I'm willing to bet that he's definitely going to be a bit more of a hardcase than we've seen from other Doctors.

Doctor Who 50th anniversary schedule revealed by BBC

he BBC has announced a raft of programmes to mark the 50th anniversary of the first episode of Doctor Who.

A 75-minute special episode called The Day Of The Doctor will star the soon-to-leave Matt Smith and David Tennant.

Smith said: "Hope you all enjoy. There's lots more coming your way."

Other highlights include a BBC Two lecture by Professor Brian Cox on the science behind the hit show and the drama An Adventure In Space and Time, written by Mark Gatiss.

The one-off programme stars David Bradley - known to millions for his role as Filch in the Harry Potter films - as William Hartnell, who played the first Doctor in 1963.

BBC Four will introduce new audiences to Hartnell, with a re-run of the first ever story. The four episodes are being shown in a restored format, not previously broadcast in the UK.

The Day of the Doctor stars Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt

BBC Two's flagship arts programme The Culture Show is to present Me, You and Doctor Who, with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural significance of the BBC's longest running TV drama.

A 90-minute documentary on BBC Radio 2 will ask "Who Is The Doctor?" - using newly-recorded interviews and exclusive archive material to find an answer.

For those less familiar with the show, Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide will provide a handy primer.

Danny Cohen, BBC director of television, said: "It's an astonishing achievement for a drama to reach its 50th anniversary.

"I'd like to thank every person - on both sides of the camera - who has been involved with its creative journey over so many years."

The anniversary episode, which also stars Jenna Coleman and Billie Piper, sees the return of the Daleks

Smith has already started filming his final scenes as the Doctor, which are due to air in this year's Christmas episode. His replacement, Scots actor Peter Capaldi, was announced in August.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer on Doctor Who, said: "50 years has turned Doctor Who from a television show into a cultural landmark. Personally I can't wait to see what it becomes after a hundred."

CBBC will broadcast a show, 12 Again, bringing together stars to share their memories of Doctor Who.

They include the seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, Tommy Knight, who played Luke Smith in The Sarah Jane Adventures, Warwick Davis, who played Porridge in a Doctor Who episode and Louise Jameson, who was the fourth Doctor Tom Baker's companion Leela.

Blue Peter is launching a competition giving viewers aged between six and 14 the opportunity to design a new gadget that will become part of the series and Matt Smith will appear on the Blue Peter sofa to answer viewers' questions.

BBC Three audiences will be encouraged to get involved and vote in Doctor Who: Monsters and Villains Weekend.

The most interesting thing about the poster to me is that the exploding TARDIS in the back as the St. John's Ambulance logo. 8's doesn't, and neither does the RTD-era one. So - is it the current TARDIS in the Time War somehow or a simple error in the actual poster creation by using the wrong artwork to build from? Interesting if it ends up being the former...!

Technically, 8 or 8.5 could've changed his exterior at any point, that's probably not what happened here, but just something to think about.

Didn't Moffat say that 11 spends the Christmas episode knowing he was going to regenerate or something, maybe because he meets 12? It is perfectly possible the story continues into Christmas.

I don't see why they couldn't recast him if they decided to use the character again in the future, timey wimey and all that. The Valeyard being taken into the Doctors past to put him on trial then changed the future from that point, including his future regenerations appearance.

Okay, so again big ol' grain of salt time, but Peter Davison might have spilled the beans that he's making an appearance in the 50th.

“I have got a copy of the script which has got my name embossed across it. So it’s top secret, but there’s other stuff, lots of other things that are going on that people should keep their eye open for around the 50th anniversary special!”

Now, it's possible he could have been referring to anything from the rumored Children in Need "Classic Doctors Protest" sketch or the audio drama "Light at the End" starring Davison, Baker, McCoy, Baker, and McGann. But still, it's an odd way to phrase it when most people are going to be focused on the 50th special itself.

Considering the focus on the Time War I will be quite disappointed if they bring in Davison and not McGann.

Hell, I'm wondering if Davison got a script for the 50th just because.

"Fine. We'll let you read it. But we're putting your name on it, so if shit leaks - we know it came from your ass."

I mean, I doubt it. There's rumors of there being paintings involved in this episode. Maybe his talks?

Come on, even Moffatt isn't that much of a troll.

"Hey, you're not involved in this. But would you like a script to read? It's quite complicated, would you like some help Peter?"

Yeah, I know. But now that you type it out - it seems a little more plausible, right? :)

Anyway, let's re-focus:

WHERE'S THE DAMN TRAILER ALREADY.

yeah, no way they're handing out the script to anyone but essential personnel.
