Two more behind the scenes pics.

Just read the news regarding the music over on GB. Disappointing, but there you are.

Interesting pictures too, it's looking like a lot more of the trailer was newly-shot than we'd suspected. I wonder if that's a stand-in or a dummy portraying Colin there?

I would fundamentally not be alright with Who being given to Worldwide. The BBC proper needs Doctor Who far more than Doctor Who needs a bit more cash.

...Go on? Not sure what you think the BBC proper stands to lose here.

It'll still be a Wales production. It'll still be "Original British Drama".

I happen to think the license fee is something worth protecting, and taking the biggest things the BBC has got away from it irreparably weakens it.

As a Doctor Who fan I'd appreciate the added budget, but as a fan of the BBC's output as a whole I'd much rather have Doctor Who included in a robust argument for the license fee.

Ah. Well, that's valid. I certainly don't want to see the license fee undermined either.

That said... Eh, I think it'd still be relevant as an example of what the freedoms offered by the license fee can achieve. Hell, it'd probably free up some money to create more original programming to bolster the BBC's modern creative portfolio even further, so you can say "these freedoms created Who and also all this brilliant stuff we're doing now".

Anyway, I'd be uncomfortable having the show's potential restrained for political reasons. It may seem superficial but I love Who a lot more than I love the BBC.

Nice one, cheers for the link.

Those pictures certainly confirm that whoever writes for the official Doctor Who tumblr doesn't know what they're talking about:

Doctor Who Tumblr said:
Q: In the 50th anniversary tribute, were the classic doctors wax models? Or just expert editing? I really want to know.
A: Expert 3D modeling.

They actually got their Tom Baker stand-in up on wires!

Oh a question!

I was thinking, with the 50th, I quite fancy some reading. Nice books on any part of Doctor Who. Like, about the show, not extra stories. Obviously Writer's Tale is up there, but any other book recommendations? Was going through Waterstones and mostly official ones are just fact books (interesting but not what I'm after) and unofficial ones of just fans reviewing each episode in anal detail. We've got the entire internet for that.

Looks like they did 3D models of the older Doctor's face(s and put them onto the stand-ins. Alternatively, it could be touched-up images for all their faces considering the lack of rotating during their faces being visible.

They've also already said they drew 2D pictures over photographs from the classic series for the older Doctors and then manipulated them for subtle movement and a 3D effect. There's no models!

These guys, amirite?

I was staggered to learn a few days back that not only are they showing the 50th special in my small town cinema, but that they're doing multiple screenings over multiple days! We've missed out on legit theatrically released films here, and yet we're getting the royal treatment for Doctor Who.

So instead of waking up at 4am to watch the simulcast on my TV, I'll be heading into the cinema at a leisurely 11am to watch it in 3D on the big screen. Good show, BBC.

Gallifrey Base has been doing this year-by-year thing where they put up a forum for discussion of different eras over the year. They're on 2005-2006 now. I don't post there, but it's fascinating to get a read on the super hardcore fans there - a few fun notes...

  • A lot of shitting on The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, which surprised me
  • Army of Ghosts/Doomsday, meanwhile, which I expected the hardcore to hate for being too silly, has ridiculously high ratings.
  • The biggest surprise by far comes in the form of the Love & Monsters thread (twice the size of its nearest rival), with comments like "Beautiful. Greatest script the series has ever seen," "Absolutely superb. Russel's best tale by far," and "Instant classic, 10/10." There's naysayers as well, and there's a lot of people who share my opinion (a wonderful script but Peter Kay is awful and the blowjob joke is a bit rough), but, bloody hell. Time has been kind to that episode within this particular audience (who were melting down after it aired.) There's a poll attached to each episode, though, and there's a lot of negative votes with no accompanying posts as well...

"Army of Ghosts/Doomsday" has Cybermen fighting Daleks. That episode takes a very cheap and easy way into people's hearts, but my god does it work.

Plus multi-dimensional stories are great when handled well, and Who handles it all a lot better than most.

A show called "Doctor Who Explained". Caught most of it tonight when I saw an ad earlier in the evening, seemed to be mostly talking-head interviews with a pretty awesome variety of classic and new Who stars. That little clip played right at the end.

Cheers.

God, I hope 12th appears in the special.

That would be a awesome - to see them be like "who the fuck is this?" and he does something, then leaves with a smile.

This gif is god-tier.

They're both like "Oh my God, it's The Doctor!"

I was actually thinking it was:

Matt: oh my god, it's him!
David: Jesus, you people are stuck with THIS fucking guy?

Paul McGann:

Nor are we in the Christmas special let me tell you. I don’t think so anyway! Not unless they are going to shoot it next week.

There’s all kind of rumours and counter-rumours and everything doing the rounds. One gets tired trying to refute things on Twitter and the like. Take it from me, I’m not in it.

The thing about Doctor Who of course is that if not now, then maybe some other time. That’s the beauty of it. We can always come back.

Great video interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOPPmhGDg38

He ain't in it, guys.

So... The McGann regeneration minisode is still on, then. :D

I kind of gave up hope before but I do think there is a chance of it happening now, even with all his denials. Quite a few reliable posters on GB are certain that he'll be in a minisode and it will be slotted into the special, probably pre-opening titles. Some of them are saying Davison filmed something as well. And this doesn't include his little film/sketch thing.

Even if he was in it he wouldn't tell us, just look at David and Billie's denials, you could tell David was obviously lying but I believed Bllie at first. Didn't Daphne Ashbrook also hint recently that he did something for the 50th as well?

There's one thing in that interview that does strike me, though - he talks about how gutted he is because he's "always wanted to be in something - anything - 3D". If the minisode was shot as part of the additional 15 minutes of 'extras' as part of the cinema release (plus online), you'd think they'd have filmed it in 3D, and if he knew that it'd be a weirdly specific thing to say.

My Apartment, or the 120 Screenings of Salo
Well, he's in Big Finish's 50th story, at least...

Yep. Along with Davison, McCoy, and both of the Baker bros. as well as nearly every companion actor that still draws breath. As far as I'm concerned that's the REAL anniversary special.

They should do a multi-doctor episode where the Doctor comes to a nursing home where all the old men in it claim to also be the Doctor, played by the surviving actors. Wibbledy-wobbledy ensues.

Honestly, I think I'll approach them as two sides of the same coin. Big Finish will be all about the show's past and legacy while the BBC's special sets up the future of Doctor Who.

I do wonder if they'll do anything major to commemorate 10 years of New Who. The show has gone so far out of its way to link the new and the old at this point that it'd feel a bit odd to recognise the divide again, but it would be nice. Especially if (fanwank pipe dream here) they got all 4 modern Doctors come back, with companions.

9 with Rose/Mickey/Jack, 10 with Donna, 11 with Amy/Rory, 12 with Clara... would be nice.
