Doctor Who 50th Anniversary |OT| Splendid Chap, All Of Them

I have a minor gripe, I really wish they hadn't of changed Matt Smiths outfit from the whole odd Science Teacher look he had originally with the greeny brown jacket to this Victorian era look. Seeing him and Tennant together in that pick just makes them look like they are both wearing almost the same outfit.

I wouldn't have put it past Moffat to have an earlier version of 11 turn up, Flesh and Stone style, purely so that the 50th would've been in it's own little bubble.

But I guess in some ways this syncs up with Moffat saying how they can at once seem incredibly similar and totally disparate. Though I do hope they dont just end up sticking Capaldi in a suit too.

Edit: Updated. Christmas special spoilers/hints from GB:

Matt's regeneration (or the circumstances surrounding it, anyway) has more than a little in common with that of the First Doctor.

He's still got one more than the Daleks! (Legs, that is...)

Silence MUST AND WILL fall when the question is asked.

Expect enemies galore! But not all of them are real.

An intimate area of a previous companion (sort of, anyway) makes an important reappearance.

Clara is now a teacher?!

The Tenth Doctor was so, so vain. To Eleven's detriment!

But where on Earth does it all go from here?!

Rest assured he goes out with a BANG!

Also, I'm hearing it takes place in Christmas Town. Yes, Christmas Town.

(Another poster:
I was told it features Daleks, Cybermens, Weeping Angels and Silence and that they're all back to Trenzalore to create the battle which turns the planet into a battlefield graveyard and where the Doctor falls.

Have I been told wrong ?)

Absolutely not. You're spot on.

But I don't think the Doc realises quite where he is for a while...

There's no trap, as such. The Doctor is there more or less by choice, albeit without a method of getting out. It's like chess. It's a stalemate. A loooooong one.

The meat is the stalemate, I think. The Doc can't leave and the Enemies can't attack. So time ticks away...

ALL THOSE HINTS SOUND SO GOOD.

Sounds like something either Ten did in his own series or something he does in the 50th special comes back to bite 11 in the butt.

Yeah I like Matt Smith's first costume more then the current one.

Absolutely. Watching series 5 now, his original costume is his iconic look. Don't like the new one as much.

I like the 1st one, and the sort of "put-togetheredness" that it has, rather than the series 6/7a costume, which looks tailored. This however, makes me jealous that I don't have it, and I NEEDS THE PRECIOUS
frock coat
.

I already have the "chevron" bow tie.

Yup, I'm with the both of you. Much prefer the tweed to the new outfit.

HOLY SHIT. 3 episodes to go in series 5 of Doctor Who and shit just got real. Holy crap. WHAT IS GOING ON. (Pandorica)

The last few episodes of S5 are incredible, you've got some great stuff ahead.

My mind hurts, so much. I'm halfway through the finale of series 5. The Doctor is rewinding.
He came back in time and talked to Amy during the Angels episode? It wasn't him during the current time?
Man.....

(not sure if we need to spoiler those, but oh well).

I would say it's safe to not spoiler tag. It's even interesting because back in Angels episode, the Doctor is wearing the right jacket, but people thought it was a continuity error at the time, but it's tiny stuff like that, that makes me shake my fist at the sky and violently scream "MOFFFAATTTTT!!!!"

I remember when Flesh and Stone first came out, and people were divided over whether or not it was a continuity error. I think I said at the time that I was sure it was just a mistake, but it would be mind-blowingly awesome if it was intentional.

And it was mind-blowingly awesome.

Series 5 done. Two series' to go in a little over two weeks. Here we go.

Any tips on where to find series 7? Hulu? It's not on Netflix. I'd rather not pay $60 or whatever the series BluRay cost, I want to buy the whole pack eventually.

Pros:
David/Matt chemistry is amazing
John Hurt looks great
Time War
Zygons
UNIT

Cons:
Still two weeks away

Also this is going to look fantastic in 3D on the big screen

There's a theater showing this in 3D on the 25th near me but I'm almost certain none of my friends would go see it with me. Kinda thinking of just going alone...

As much as people seem to hate on Rose here, I'm glad she's back. Billie Piper looks good.

Agreed. Thought she looked amazing here:

As said, it's on Amazon Video or also iTunes (that's what I did, and then watched it on my AppleTV)

That's another thing I'm looking forward to. The current run with Moffat improved on cinematography vs. the RTD era, especially series 5 and 6. This definitely looks like they filmed it as a movie, rather than just another special.

And no spared expenses towards the effects, too.

Rose is another reason I wish Eccleston was back. I thought Rose and 10 didn't work that well together, but Rose and 9 were brilliant together.

I thought they matched up fine. After The Christmas Invasion, it's almost as if the Doctor never regenerated. But it felt more romantic vs. being platonic with 9.

So if Tennant meets Clara as the Doctor's new companion, then the Doctor wouldn't be confused (or maybe confused in a different way) when he meets her in HIS timeline right?

Ugh. My mind feels wibbly wobbly.

The mechanisms are never explained but they the Doctor tends to forget encounters with himself. Occasionally he remembers but only during the event.

I don't know if I buy those spoilers for Christmas.

The Silence I get. They could even call the episode "Silent Night". But The Weeping Angels don't seem like the type to team up or participate in any scheme except their own perpetuation and self-preservation. They don't seem to have an agenda against The Doctor.

I was actually going to ask this. I get a lot of spam email at work, but I recently got an email announcing theater showings of this in the area. Most of them are like in D.C., but there's a showing that's only like an hour or an hour and a half away from me.

I've got that whole week for vacation off from work and I never really do anything exciting for myself when I'm on vacation because, well, I live in the middle of nowhere. Would it be super dorky if I drove to more than an hour to see this in a theater? I kind of want to do it, because I never do this kind of stuff when I have actual vacation time. I'm sure there would be Dr. Who fans there too, so it wouldn't be like me going to the theater alone like what I do now when I want to see a movie. Then again, I'd be going alone.

I just want to kind of do it. I don't live near anywhere where there are like conventions like PAX or Comicon, so I kind of just want to do it. Even it's just me and four other people in a theater, it would be awesome.

So what do you think? Stay home and watch it alone or go to a theater alone and watch it with the hopes I meet other Who fans?

I'd go to the cinema alone. In fact, that is what I'll be doing. I'm going to the first screening available, so I figure a big chunk of the local fans will be there (assuming there are any local fans where I am).

Worst case scenario, you get to enjoy the film in 3D on the big screen with nobody distracting you.

Using up one of his regenerations to create the meta-crisis Doctor, I imagine.

Ok this episode with the aliens that you forget when you turn around is insane. Show just keeps getting better.

That 2 parter is fantastic. I don't think the show ever looked better. Those two had a particularly high spectacle look to them. They filmed in America and the cinematography was perfect-with the exception of that diner that was supposedly in Utah, but was obviously a US-themed restaurant created by non-Americans. Kind of like the Cafe 80s from BTTF2.

It's a very lovely restaurant in Cardiff Bay! The food is good. They've got photos from the filming on the walls now.

Yep been to that restaraunt! Didn't even notice for a bit, best moment of realisation ever!

Will create an interesting dynamic if Ten already knows about his impending death in the 50th. Might cause some bitterness seeing Eleven prancing around.

Also, dem Christmas spoilers! Hope he fucks up the Weeping Angels after what they did to Amy and Rory.

That's Eddie's Diner. It's lovely- I ate there myself after the Doctor Who Experience Bay Tour.

Oh shit is Moffat going to
retroactively make Ten's regeneration less childish?

It would make sense in a way. Imagine if you got told you were being fired from your job and they bought your replacement in for a trial run while you were still there. Quite the bummer.

But equally doesn't it make it seem as if Ten is saying "I don't wanna die and turn into that guy. He sucked." I don't think End of Time's many, many problems can ever really be retroactively fixed.

Thoughts on the trailer

- That shot of the 3 Doctors walking together. Hnghh.
Still should have been Eccleston.

- That guy running away at 00:21 is a bit of a dead ringer for McGann!

- "Great men are forged in fire. It is the privilege of lesser men to light the flames." Fantastic line. I'm pretty sure Hurt Doctor is indecisive about ending the Time War and looks to his future selfs on what to do, maybe causing a huge paradox.

- Cheeky waving Rose? So maybe she's not omnipotent Bad Wolf figure... all the time?

- Wouldn't describe myself as a huge Tennant fan, but god it's good to see him back.

- I love the fact we can have a multi-Doctor story; someone who lives for thousands of years, but maybe only has a slightly better memory than that of a human, so he forgets things. Solves the problem of "Well Eleven knows what's going to happen anyway"

- Overall, hyped as fuck. Begone the next two weeks of relative unimportance.
