In a dizzyingly meta development, the special is filming at the Doctor Who Experience tomorrow.

Probably to use the replica of Tennant's TARDIS set that they have there.

OR

Maybe they're secretly filming an episode based on The Forgotten? :p

It'll have to be pretty tightly shot if so; the replica of Tennant's TARDIS at the experience is rather incomplete compared to the screen one.

The London version of the experience was a much more comprehensive version I think, but it was shrunk massively for Cardiff. They couldn't really make another Tennant TARDIS, as it'd have to be commissioned ground-up. Funnily enough, this is still the actual, original prop from 2005... It's been moved so many times now - from the original production place to Upper Boat, from Upper Boat to London, and then from London back to Cardiff... it's been pretty heftily cannibalized at this point. The Smith one they could copy the parts from the real, recently-built deal.

Did they destroy the original? Or did they actually destroy it when it crashed when he regenerated? Or is that actually the original?

They kept the set. The worst thing that's happened to it is get dirty and lose one of those coral pillars from filming the regeneration scene.

Dismantled to send to the exhibit, I believe.

They did the same with the previous TARDIS control room, since they moved production to a new lot and couldn't move that set.

Well, the 2010 Smith control room they actually built a second one for the exhibition. The filming one was dismantled, and who knows where it is now. Matt stole the coat stand! That's all we know.

They never actually destroyed any of the coral pillars. The one that blows when Tennant's Doctor regenerates was specifically built for that purpose, and wasn't there before. Some of it did melt and get badly damaged during that and the first scene in the Eleventh Hour, but then they spent a bit patching it up for The Doctor's Wife knowing it was going straight to the exhibition in London afterwards.

Like I said earlier, the tenth Doctor TARDIS interior at the Cardiff exhibition is very noticeably different from the filming plot - the walls only extend about eight feet up, for instance, only around 2/3rds of the original walls are there and it's generally way smaller. Here's another example shot of what I mean. Very little of the set is 'there' from angles other than this one - the walls stretch round probably that much again..

I feel like it'd be very difficult for them to convincingly film on, so perhaps it's something else? Hard to say...

It has to be said this isn't the first time they've filmed at the experience - they've used it as a location before, though I forget where/when...

^ Smith's wearing his 7b costume, Tennant his classic suit. Just a similar cut of the jackets from a distance.

That has to be for a little inteview clip on the website or something I'd guess, given the tightness of the shot, the "casually talking" sort of posture Tennant has and the fact there's no way that's a 3D camera.

Still, seeing them together...! And I still much prefer the battered-old Time War-survivor TARDIS.

One of the most exciting aspects of this special for me is the idea of the music. I wonder if Murray Gold will bring back many Tenth Doctor era cues? I do sort of miss that old main Doctor's theme - even though we hear it briefly in A Good Man Goes to War - other than that not since the moment the tenth Doctor went.

I can already imagine him doing some sort of mix with the old and new themes. Hearing Rose's Theme again would also be awesome.

If by Rose's theme you mean this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPWDUMzJ1i4

Then 100%, absolutely. It's still his best character theme, I think, though Donna & Amy both have amazing themes. If you mean Doomsday, that piece can sod off, I think. Really hated how it was reused (even briefly) later on, as it kinda dimmed the specialness the piece had in its first use. Perfect analogy for Rose in general, ho ho ho.

I had to look through my Who soundtracks to double check that there's none titled "Bad Wolf Theme".

Unless you're referring to Doomsday? That's a separate theme.
I'm talking about the theme that played when Rose met the Doctor and also when she became Bad-Wolf.

Yep, that theme.

I'd say that Amy's Theme (and the various different styles) and Rose's Theme are my favourite ones. I like Donna's because I thought it perfectly fits. Martha's sounds like it's piggybacking off Rose's.

Rose's theme was a bit overused as Series 2 continued. Notably, I thought it was awkwardly placed when Mickey was saying his goodbyes after deciding to stay in the parallel universe. Not that it wasn't appropriate, but Murray Gold decided to use the latter part so suddenly, where the them really gets loud.

Part of the problem there is that Gold doesn't actually score the episodes. He just gets scripts off Moffat (and before that RTD) and composes 'basic themes' for the series based off the ideas and themes expressed in scripts. Sometimes he'll be more specific like "here is key music for the Cyberman episodes" but usually it's just very vague.

Any actual placing of score to the footage is done in the edit, and he's never even there - he's off in New York, and works from there. If you're really familiar with the original pieces start-to-finish, you can hear where they're cut and spliced together in the edit fairly easily quite often. This makes things like the tightness of the whole singing sequence in 'Rings of Akhaten' really rather remarkable when considered.

I'm really hoping given how much time there is between filming and broadcast, Gold will actually get to score this episode. He usually fully scores the Christmas episodes, but never series episodes.

You're referring to Doctor's Theme, I believe.

Well, the Doomsday theme is actually - the main melody of that piece is a riff on The Doctor's Theme that plays the first time she enters the TARDIS, and then doesn't again until Doomsday. The two themes are sort of intricately related. When she becomes the Bad Wolf in series 1 is the Doctor's theme, though.

I have to say that I think you've given me the most insight into behind-the-scenes stuff on Doctor Who out of anybody.

This was used during Ten's last meeting of Rose prior to regenerating wasn't it? Soooo made me cry :x

It's notable that various pieces of established music get thrown in to different episodes that they don't really fit it. There was a really noticeable bit of Dalek Asylum score that was thrown in to Cold War for no apparent reason, and the trailers get really daft with it; the trailer for Hide has a piece that hasn't appeared in the show proper for nearly 8 years, and random themes from stuff as obscure as the Futurekind has been used over the years.

It's easy to tell that Gold had a far more active hand in scoring the Christmas specials. It's hard to imagine any other episodes getting their own soundtracks as A Christmas Carol did, or even a 10 minute suite of exclusive music like Voyage of the Damned did.

Well, they make use of what they can. They can only afford for Gold to do a certain number of minutes of new music a year. There's more rearrangements of older stuff (or older stuff with synth over the top, like the piece after the submarine surfaces this week) this series than usual as they had a particularly high 'new music' spend in a sense - there was of course the new Amy/Rory theme that's laced throughout 7a and appears in full when they jump off the building, Clara's theme, the plot-essential song from Rings and some other bits. It explains why we didn't get an iconic 'Ice Warrior' theme this week, really.

I'm sure they gained a bit of a pass with the Christmas special being in the middle, though - as they could use that (separate) budget for some of the Clara stuff we've heard reused since then. I think this series' score has so far been really fantastic, even if I am tiring of variations on bits of "I Am The Doctor" a bit.

The Runaway Bride is still I think his finest single episode score. Voyage and A Christmas Carol come really close as well. You really can tell the difference, so one hopes that's budgeted for here.

Which TARDIS interior do you guys like the best and least? Please include pictures.

My favourite:

I don't hate any of them, but I least like the 8th Doctor's:

I do like the more homely feel of it, though. My opinion on his TARDIS kind of bounces around.

I do actually think they've significantly toned down the use of I Am The Doctor recently. Yeah, it's often used, but it isn't as omnipresent as it was in series 5, both inside the episodes and out.

I do agree that there have been a lot of really great themes this series, though. I actually really liked hearing the Dalek Asylum bit again, because I thought it was a really effective, vaguely Planet of the Apes-y bit of scoring. Clara's theme is nice and delicate, Gold nearly single-handedly rescued Rings, and the Amy and Rory theme is up there with This is Gallifrey, The Greatest Story Never Told and The Impossible Astronaut as the cream of the really stunning, knock-you-sideways tracks. I look forward to the details of the soundtrack that we're meant to get soon.

It's always a play on that theme, though, usually on the series 6 extension of the bridge section. I'm looking forward to getting an all-new action theme, eventually.

Here's a filming pic of John Hurt:

Interestingly, he looks very much like he's wearing
the ninth Doctor's leather jacket

Here's a spoiler from someone who is usually very accurate at Gallifrey Base. It could be a HUGE, HUGE spoiler for the 50th or Series 7 finale or could be bullshit. Please spoiler tag any discussion related to it.

They are proposing that John Hurt is playing the ninth doctor. Not that Eccleston has been "erased from Doctor Who", but he would be the 10th, Tennant the 11th etc.
Something happened to the Doctor that was so traumatic he's suppressed the memory one of his incarnations.

I believe they posted that before the set pics from today with Hurt wearing the 9th's jacket.
