You know what I was looking forward to on GB, seeing what the reaction was by that one poster who was certain no old doctors, McGann especially would return, he hasn't been online since the 13th, I bet he feels pretty stupid now.

If there's an Eight mini series, I hope they get Sheridan Smith back as Lucie. I'd be ecstatic.

I'd rather an 8th Doctor miniseries a thousand times over before we get the inevitable "Vastra and Strax Mysteries", but I know which one's likely to happen first :'(

I would flip. The hype from this would simply dwarf any reaction I had to The Night of the Doctor.

Even if all they did is re-tool some Big Finish dramas for filming, I'd be happy as hell.

They could even put animation to some of the old audio plays to expose classic stories to a new audience, though, I think it goes without saying we'd all very much prefer a live action series.

The animation they use for the classic episodes is hideous, I'm sorry. Like... admirable that they're bothering, but why bother with that?

Like I said, I absolutely think McGann's take on the Doctor in those seven minutes is better than the portrayals that Eccelston and Tennant offered. If he gets his own series, I think he'll surpass Matt for me as well. His performance was subtler than the others but he owned the role in a way that they never did.

Oh my you could be right, I never saw like that.

I like you.

This makes complete sense and will be completely frustrating when it inevitably doesn't happen. Damn you to hell Ignis.

lol. I genuinely think that that's what is going to happen, as long as they can get Eccelston on board. It just fits together too perfectly. I'll be disappointed if Moffat can't get it done.

Don't get my hopes up. She's probably one of my favourite companions. AND Sheridan Smith is totally adorable and has does numerous interviews saying how much she liked doing the audios. AND she's kinda the psuedo companion in Jonathan Creek which is basically Doctor Who minus the space and time stuff. AND she's basically a more likeable version of Rose so she'd be accessible to new viewers....it lines up to such a degree that it clearly makes too much sense :/

Should be seeing the clip on Children in Need soon, hopefully.

Really hope it isnt the rumoured
meeting of 10 and 11, would rather see that during the episode.

Children in Need Clip Talk:

- Paintings glass has been smashed from the inside, all in the gallery, with things escaping from them
- Eleven remembering it, this is where he comes in
- Chucks Fez in time kind of time hole
- Jumps in, Ten picks up the Fez and they look at each other, in a forest

I'm okay with this, McGann needed a proper regeneration scene plus the acknowledgement of his non-movie companions in his most dire moment was great. I feel the minisode happens so far into Eight's life that it doesn't create any real limits on future BF stories too.

I don't know, you'd be missing out on the whole Charley era. Chimes at Midnight and the entire Zagreus arc are pretty great stories.

Zagreus was a bit too much for me, but Chimes of Midnight is my favorite one so far. The mixture of dark humor and genuine mystery makes for a perfect 8th Doctor story. I cannot recommend it enough for anyone wanting to get into the 8th doctor audio novel. Invaders From Mars is also a lot of fun.

I don't post on GB, I just go there for spoilers and info.

Speaking of GB... this was posted earlier:

So it could very well happen, if it does they might be exclusive to iplayer since they're having a major revamp where they want lots of exclusive content.

I want it. I want it all over my face.

so

that was kind of my first exposure to McGann as the Doctor, having not seen anything besides NuWho and a few of the old old serials.

Where would one go to hear these audio dramas or see his movie?

The only thing I remember about that movie is that Julia Roberts brother aka that mobster guy from The Dark Knight (Maroni?) was the Master.

And that it was really shit.

I've asked my contact about this. I'll update when i hear anything back,

I highly doubt the BBC would have an meeting on a single day's turnaround the very next day. Schedule one, maybe. Probably shite. Hopefully the sentiment expressed there is one actually ongoing, though.

RE Gallifrey Base, it's a tip. It's awful now, has got a lot worse over the past few years. It's a good place to gather information and lurk, though - and the less active forums are better. The merch forum is pretty good, for instance. Any of the boards about discussion of the show ongoing are almost always guaranteed to be awful.

So we still don't know what "The Last Day" minisode is

Well, eh. The title, and where Hurt's Doctor appears to be in the 50th, indicates it'll probably be the series of events that finally propel him towards The Moment and a 'final solution', surely. I'll be interested to see if it mirrors one of the comic showings of that, where
The Eighth Doctor indirectly causes the death by Dalek of an 8 year old kid. It's then that he goes 'no more', and that's that.
That's obviously wiped from canon by the addition of this Hurt, but still.

Is anyone else afraid that the 50th will let them down? I'm not sure what my expectations are for the episode, I'm just scared that I won't be satisfied with it.

It's certainly no guarantee it's going to be awesome. It could disappoint, most definitely.

In fact, I was hosting trivia the other day, and an impromptu nerdfight broke out after a team's name was read aloud, about how you were some sort of "lesser" nerd if you were looking forward to Hunger Games: Catching Fire more than you were Doctor Who's 50th.

Now, the fact those are two REALLY different entertainments to be comparing against each other - I don't get why one would automatically assume one is going to be way more entertaining than the other. It's possible Hunger Games is going to be mediocre genre pap. Or it could be legitimately good (early reviews seem to lean towards the latter). The 50th could be a 75 minute ride through Doctor Who heaven. It's also entirely possible that Moffat fucks the dog on this script, and it ends up being just sorta confusing and emotionally hollow. It's not like he doesn't have precedent on that score.

I'm not worried. It's going to be fun, dark and show elements of stuff that has only been hinted at previously. I think Moffat is going to hit it out of the park.

Also I just watched the Shakespeare Code, and forgot that
Queen Elizabeth I at the end is yelling and going off at Tennant! Her younger self is in the 50th, I guess they have picked up that thread.

I do still wonder how all these story elements are going to combine for the episode though.

I choose to believe that Series 7 was so underwhelming on the whole because Moffat was devoting his time and energy to making the 50th spectacular. It helps me sleep.

hmm, I thought Series 7 (or the back half at least) was much better than 6.

S6 had higher highs, but lower lows - and a lot of them. S7b is more consistently solid-to-good throughout.

It's not great, but it gets the job done. I'd take it over the old style reconstructions any day.

So if I want to listen to the 8th Doctor's audio stories where can I find them and what are the best ones to check out?

Asked & answered a couple times in the last few pages, but here's the links:

http://www.bigfinish.com/hubs/v/doctor-who

And the wikipedia regarding the dramas, with lists of Doctors, Companions, and synopses.

edit: Nice article in the Atlantic about the minisode.

Different animation studios also work on different stories, so some look better than others. Ice Warriors is probably one of the worst.

Not as bad as Reign of Terror, there were some real jumpy cuts in that one and the way the faces were done got a bit off at times. The worst I can say about Ice Warriors is that the characters looked a little boxy and the arm movements were kinda janky. Still, like I said, better than nothing.

Haven't seen The Invasion or Tenth Planet yet.

I felt like the special effects for the show after The Snowmen went way, way downhill. Everything just felt fake, in terms of VFX.

Oh really? You didn't like Time of the Daleks or Neverland either? Shakespearean Daleks!

Those were alright . Neverland over Time of the Daleks, I think. What I wasn't a huge fan of in Zagreus was the whole TARDIS thing, really. The only story so far that I didn't like was Minuet in Hell, but it did get a lot better towards the end. It had an interesting correlation to The Next Doctor.

I didn't really notice what you say, but it's worth noting the company that did all the SFX from 2005 on closed down after Series 6. Another company rose from the ashes with a lot of the same employees and took the Who contract, but obviously as a startup they've got less resources and stuff.

I just finished Scherzo yesterday, really good creepy story.

Yep, I really hope they do try and get an animation happening for The Web of Fear, just makes it easier to watch then still shots.

Out of the 2 I've seen, I'll agree with this, The Invasion looked great, Ice Warriors was a let down.

I wish there was a good way to get classic Who in Canada. Buying DVDs is way outside my price range.

Wasn't there a classic Who "watch list" floating around GAF a couple months ago? Near the end of Series 7.

The Radio Times, the UK's premiere TV-based magazine - one with a historic history with Who (it's been running longer than the show & featured Who on the cover for the first time way back in the 60s!) ran a reader poll for the 50th. The results:

  1. 56.1% David Tennant
  2. 15.93% Matt Smith
  3. 10.05% Tom Baker
  4. 6.59% Christopher Eccleston
  5. 2.86% Patrick Troughton
  6. 2.38% Jon Pertwee
  7. 1.59% Peter Davison
  8. 1.36% Sylvester McCoy
  9. 1.35% Paul McGann
  10. 0.9% William Hartnell
  11. 0.88% Colin Baker

  1. 25.09% Rose Tyler (Billie Piper)
  2. 15.42% Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen)
  3. 12.32% Donna Noble (Catherine Tate)
  4. 9.09% River Song (Alex Kingston)
  5. 4.79% Amy Pond (Karen Gillan)
  6. 4.1% Jamie McCrimmon (Frazer Hines)
  7. 3.49% Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman)
  8. 3.09% Ace (Sophie Aldred)
  9. 2.65% Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman)
  10. 2.54% Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman)
  11. 2.39% Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart (Nicholas Courtney)
  12. 15.03% (Others)
Utterly insane landslide for Tennant even after four years. How different the poll would be in America, though! Goes to show that the show does have a little less of the ridiculous fuss about it in the UK among Joe public than it did during the mental press storm of series 4, though. Tennant truly is a new generation's Tom Baker.

It would be an even bigger landslide for Tennant. I guarantee that.

Here's an interesting bit of trivia I just realized: Even if you don't count the War Doctor, by the time Christmas roles around Stephen Moffat will have written for more Doctors than anyone in the series history. 5,8,9,10,11,12 and War. I'd have to check but I believe Terrance Dicks and Robert Holmes are tied for second with Dicks writing for 1(even though it wasn't the REAL 1)2,3,4 and 5 and Holmes doing 2,3,4,5 and 6. It's probably going to be very difficult for anyone to beat Moffat's record.
Doesn't Gatiss have a fair shot, when you factor in Adventure in Space and Time and the fact that he has a chance of taking over when Moff gives up the showrunner role?
