So weird though to have a few people in line express their concern for the coming season because of how much they hate River. Is that a common opinion?

I have to say I'm not a big fan of hers. I don't really hate her, just not a fan.

trudderham said:
Yeah, apparently the
Silents
have appeared in every episode of series 5. The guys at Gallifrey Base have gone to town looking for clues and possible sightings, and there are loads, here's a list: http://gallifreybase.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4121879&postcount=421

And this is absolutely brilliant and makes me look forward to the season more.

She's too manic and hyper when it's just her. I didn't hate her, but I didn't care much for her either. After "Amy's Choice" it kind of turned me around, mostly because I think Amy/Rory works much better than just Amy because Rory seems to stabilize her a bit.

Totally read Amy, and not river....

See, I really like River but I can totally understand someone not being into her either way. Just strange to have more than one person express reservations about an entire season because River will continue to exist.

It just makes no sense! River, Amy, and Rory are all absolutely wonderful.

Edit: putting the spoilery stuff in its own post.

I'm honestly not seeing most of these supposed sightings. They look to be nothing more than weird shadows.

Yeah, I don't see a lot of them either but a few of them seem plausible.

Based on a minor plot point revealed in the early screening, I'd say
the one from the Eleventh Hour of Amy messing with the controls
is almost definitely deliberate and related to
the Silence
.

Larger spoiler from the screening (from about a half hour into episode 1) to elaborate:
Any command the Silence give you while you're looking at them you will obey without remembering why.

I love it how when Moffat creates a monster he goes all the way out with them beyond "humanoid creatures with animal-like creatures" that RTD loved.

RTD seemed to think that the more foreign something was, the more frightening, whereas Moffat starts with things we all know very well -- being uneasy in the darkness, spotting something out of the corner of your eye, a sense that you're forgetting something important -- and then elaborates on what might be frightening about these largely mundane things.

I see nothing foreign about dudes with fly heads. His best monsters were the Toclafane and the Beast, and the second one doesn't count.

The second one totally counts and is the one monster I really want to see return at some point. The Toclanfane were laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame. The weird thing from Midnight was RTDs second best monster.

The Beast doesn't count because it's been part of Judeo-Christian mythology for centuries.

The despaired last remnants of humanity coming back to kill their ancestors? Fucking awesome.

Actually, you are right, that thing was his best.

River, man. River.

I don't really have any problem with her being around. I actually like her over all story and mystery behind her. Just her character I find somewhat annoying.

Edit: As for the spoilery stuff..
Does it seem like the Silents will be the overall arc of this season and the first episode is just setting it up? Sort of like the cracks in the last series? Just wondering if the midseason finale's 'big ending' will be silent related.

Yeah, there is that argument. I still fucking loved it though. Impossible Planet/Satan Pit is still my favourite pre-Moffat story, and the Beast is a huge part of why that is.

Yeah, great concept, pretty creepy. It's just that the execution was plain crap. The stupid voices, naff CG and the fact they look like something that hangs around the Death Star cleaning up after Stormtroopers combined to turn one great idea into a massive hole of suck.

Having looked at the pics and the video, every one of those seems to be either a production error or something the viewer is misinterpreting.

What's that 8th Doctor quote again? :)

Wasn't this the same thing everyone said about the second doctor last series too though? When Smith had his sleeves rolled up while talking to Amy?

Not me. I didn't notice it when I first saw the episode but after it was pointed out, it's quite clearly a Doctor from another time line. I think it was a pretty accepted theory.

I wasn't here at the time, but I thought on gallifrey it wasn't really accepted at first.

Yeah, ok, ok, point taken :p But by the standards of Doctor Who, I still think it's poor. IMO. I can accept that the show's CG is never going to be super great, I'd probably have bailed out by now if I was gonna be riled up by bad CG :p

I thought the series five CG was pretty good, barring the space fish. I merit it on the fact that there was a more cohesive CG style between all of the episodes, however.

Yeah, plus the general camerawork, cinematography and all that was much improved, easily the best looking show on British TV (with the possible exception of Sherlock). When people say that the show budget is dropping, it's hard to tell when set design, CG and general presentation seems to be improving substantially with each new season. (The chicken thing from 'Vincent' looked dumb though, ha).

I was thinking about how the
Silents
have been in every episode of series 5, and I think it's probably really mundane. We know from trailers that the
Silents shoot lightning from their fingertips, so it's probably the Silents attacking the TARDIS with lightning during the opening credits of each episode.

I really don't see it being something so lame. That would just be a huge copout.

I meant foreign in the sense of "not something you'll encounter in the real world," but certainly not as something unique, new, or interesting. He goes for "weeeeird" in a very mundane way.

It's hard to say for sure if they'll be back, but there are at least two (possibly three, depending) big things that are set up in the first two episodes that are clearly going to play out over the course of the season. It's a very mysterious plotline with a ton of atmosphere and it feels like there are so many little strands that could potentially spin off into something larger.

My hype is growing...Dammit 23rd come on. The more we see from Moffet I think it just shows how meh RTD was, I really hope Moffet can keep this up though.

I am weak and read the spoilers posted in here about
The Silents
, and damn does that sound awesome. Wonderfully creepy and understated. I am sure in Moffatt's hands it will be terrifying.

Ok regarding the current spoilers about the
Silent pics, especially the one from the Big Bang episode are damn awesome. If Moffat really did plan all of this out then he is a goddamn genius.

He's just planned ahead. Much like the writers over at Fringe.

And so unlike the writers of Heroes ever did.

:( The fact that Doctor Who uses foreshadowing and callbacks properly now is brilliant stuff. It makes it feel like a real TV show, instead of the villain-of-the-week show like it always used to. Not that that was bad, but we've all seen how much it's improved thanks to implementing proper continuity through the episodes.

It's a shame the current folk working on the show 'seem' so wary of the wealth of history it has. I can only imagine the stories that could be created using concepts and ideas from classic Who and giving them proper reference and polishing.

Hmmm. The one they mention in the Eleventh Hour I can get behind. Especially when you watch the scene without background music. LINK

Yeah,
she's either bad at acting or she was told to look horrified like that. Ugh, that is actually really creeping me out.

Oh shit I just got what video was about thanks to your comment. This better be real.

Do we know if the Daleks are back this series? Would be nice if they kept them out of the series for a bit, giving them time to grow in numbers and be more awesome.

Answers in spoiler tags please. Might wanna pad the answer out.

What are peoples favourite incarnations of the classic villains? The 1996 Cybermen creep me out more than any other incarnations. Those masks and the vocal delivery get to me every time. I can't begin to imagine how terrifying that would have been for a kid watching it back then. Damn me for being born in the late 80's.

I actually like the new Daleks being divided into job classes. I still want to know what 'The Eternal' does.

Roger Delgado is my favourite Master. I liked Simms' Master, but my opinion of him is probably lower because I disliked the storyline for his Master.

Keeping all under spoilers just in case.
I'm not sure if they are back. I would hope that they save them for a little bit. Especcially if the cybermen image is hinting at some sort of alternate timeline due to the crack. Daleks coming back after a hiatus with something to them changing would be interesting.

New promo pictures were released yesterday which slightly spoil the title of the premier episode. I made an a new avatar
which includes the astronaut's helmet
but wanted to check for a consensus on whether or not that's too spoilery and should be left until the episode airs.
