I just tried this game at a store today, rolling by shaking the wiimote must be the worst thing ever, why Retro, why?!?!

I swear some people just don't have the coordination to use even the simplest motion controls. I have had aboslutely no problems with the roll in DKCR, the spin in Mario Galaxy or NSMB Wii, or the tricks in Mario Kart Wii.

This may sound crazy, because we all know Ninty would never hand over the keys, but who wants to see Retro's take on Super Mario Bros.? Not Paper Mario or any other spin off, but the core SMB series.

And is there some way to make the first post in these threads editable by all of us so that it can be updated with all the reviews?

I think Mario is pretty much perfect the way it is. I'll rather see them make an effort to update Zelda.

If anything, Retro needs to try their skills with the next Zelda after Skyward Sword. I'd love to see what they can do with this serie if it can be as good as their own Donkey Kong & Metroids.

Seriously. If people are that pathetically uncoordinated that they can't perform a simple flick of the wrist then why do they even own a Wii in the first place? It gets kind of annoying having to read "Waah waah waggle iz 2 hard 4 me!" posts all the time.

I remember reading about it and the jetpack coming from dk64...

How do you use ?

Loving the game so far.

One of my only issues with the game is the checkpoint system. It worked well in the original DKC games but with so many collectibles, it can get pretty annoying.

Diddy shoots his peanut popgun when he slams the ground, but only in 2 player mode. There is no way to get Diddy to shoot peanuts in single player.

Is it possible to want to play Nintendo franchise games and not like waggle?

Slightly off topic, but instead of going out and purchasing DKCR, I went and bought DKC2 on VC instead. I had never played anything past the first few stages and it's quite enjoyable (but kind of foul looking). Only on the third area (the bayou?) and it's already had some challenging moments. Going to try and finish it before picking up DKCR, which might be difficult given how fantastic it looks and sounds.

You need to play this on a SD CRT.

Probably, but I think it has more to do with the art style used for the games than anything else. While it looked amazing back in the day, the pre-rendered sprites style used in games like this and both Diablo games just doesn't hold up today. No complaints when I play Super Metroid or Super Mario World on my TV, those still look good to me.

That said, it's still got great atmosphere and some neat visual touches, like the water in the flooded ship levels or the rainstorms. Mostly bought it because of how much I love the soundtrack (thanks YouTube!) and how well-regarded it is here on GAF. That, and I really adored DKC1 back when it came out.

Stick with it. The game continually ramps up in quality, so you won't regret it.

I'm at world 2 (I'm playing this game very slowly, due to playing it in co-op at a friend's house), and I just figured out the actual timing of the boost jump you get after killing an enemy. Throughout all of world 1 (and the K level) I assumed you had to hit jump again during a small window when you were actually touching the enemy. No. Actually all you have to do is hit jump again and hold it anytime *before* you hit the enemy. I feel so stupid; this would have made 1-K sooo much easier.

omg thank you so much. The game comes with a pretty decent manual but I haven't read one of those things in a decade or so.

Probably not. People who automatically write off games with motion controls are most likely too immature to enjoy Nintendo's games in the first place.

I find that this game requires so much precision that the "waggle" gets in the way sometimes. I've had instances where the waggle activates on the upswing, sometimes on the downswing, and sometimes it takes as long as a couple shakes before it kicks in. I haven't tried the controls with the nunchuck yet, maybe that works better for the waggle, but I prefer the digital pad for movement.

Don't get me wrong, I'm really enjoying this game. I just think it would be a 10 in my mind if they mapped the controls differently.

Yeah, that works well unless you have Diddy with you. Then you just hover over the enemy and fail to do a boost jump, then it require precise timing. :(

Hmmm?

The only collectibles which you don't retain after dying are the KONG letters. Puzzle Pieces (even ones you get in bonus rooms) are still kept after death (as long as you eventually finish the level).

Okay, I've officially renamed 1-K to "1-Kocksucker". 1 hour with the extra heart item and I still can't fucking beat it. My fingers are so stiff.

Seriously. How can you defend such a stupid, constraining move by Retro? Speedrunning 1-K requires a lot of rolling at the right time to get the right momentum, and most of the time it needs to be done in a very precise manner. When I fail halfway through because the waggle didn't trigger properly, I have nothing but the controls to blame. It would be a non-issue for them to assign roll to the grab button, or give the option for it.

I don't really buy the argument of "rolling is rarely needed" either, if I want to play the whole game by rolling through it (as I do) I should be able to dos o without having to worry about if I will make the next jump as I intended or if DK will just ignore my shaking. Maybe I should add that I had no problems whatsoever with the waggle in any of the recent Mario games.

My thumbs may be hurting, but I did it, I beat the game along with all the K levels. I can also proudly say that I did it without once using the super guide. Easily one of my favorite games this year and definitely the best platformers I've played in ages. :D

One question now,
do you get anything for beating the Golden Temple (9-1) level or is it just an extra level to die on a hundred times?
Mirror Mode, which also brings DK's life down to a single heart and eliminates Diddy

Are you sure it's not just because you waggled too early (before hitting the ground)?

Also shaking in the air will negate any shake attempt if you land. Since sudden deceleration will be detected, and I assume they don't instantly make you land to roll while continually shaking to avoid complaints about "accidental rolls while waggling"

I loved the spin in galaxy and thought its implementation was perfect. Never once did I have an issue with it. The rolling on the other hand is a bit of an issue for me since you have to gesture a bit harder and it only seems to recognize when you motion downward. It won't register if I do it in any other direction or do it lightly like in galaxy. That coupled with the fact you do it a lot (blowing, pounding, rolling) makes it less enjoyable for me. It does work, but I wish it had some sensitivity options so I could crank them up. I've had a few accidental deaths due to not flicking it hard enough.

Just beat the game (tore through the main levels without collecting everything).

The last boss--wow, let's just say that he came really close to costing me a wiimote. I was very tempted to use the Super-Guide a couple times in the last two worlds, but I refused and persevered.

Absolutely a candidate for GOTY in my book. What's next for Retro? As much as I'd love to get another DK, I think that Star Fox needs them.

Man, World 4 was hard.
Even if was a mine cart/rocket barrel only world, I loved it.
Now to World 5. The first stage is already awesome :) Best level design ever to grace a 2D platformer, so far.

edit: Retro needs to work on a 2D/3D Donkey Kong Galaxy. I believe they would put even more care in the level design than EAD Tokyo.

edit 2: How do I unlock those x-K stages and time trials? Getting all collectibles in a world? Because that would take me very long :lol

wait what
best thing about that vid is the guy playing is doing the roll-as-soon-as-you-land technique (a complaint against waggle controls specifically stated on this very page) effortlessly and repeatedly every time he wants to. It's pretty obvious what's going on here...

...he's a robot which is able to reprogram the wiimote through a connector in his palm so that it registers motions via his mind.

Not all, but quite a few. I got 2-K without getting all the puzzle pieces. They probably take into account your total puzzle pieces, it is my guess though.
Edit: Even 1-1 Gold time trial is hard.

Yeah you're right I didn't notice that. Feel a lot better about the system now.

Bah, it's unintuitive is what it is. I suppose I have to practice it to get better, even though I feel as I shouldn't have to. It's unintuitive and feels awkward.

I wonder, does anyone actually feel like the motion controls add anything to the experience? I feel like they only detract from it, or that people are indifferent. Is there anyone who can argue against them binding the roll to a button?

Wow, 1:05. Very impressive, I got the gold with 1:12 I believe, clearly theres room for improvement. Great level though.
My record there is 01:11:32, I could have shortened it up if I had rolled more, but I forgot what platforms came after the spike ceilings.

I wish we could save replays!

personally I don't feel motion adds a thing in this game.

Mashing a button to ground pound, and holding a button to roll would provide equal results.

However the controls in this game (and many other wii games) are perfectly serviceable. My issue more than anything is people who blame any and everything regarding control on "unresponsive waggle". Like I said before if there is anything to fault the controls for (which is barely anything), it would be the fact that they mapped so many actions to motion. That issue wouldn't go away if it was mapped to a button.
