Doom: The Dark Ages is a flop

80$ for a base game that does not exist in physical copies (you have to download entire game instead). Gamepass won't help either as you'll simply finish it in a week for 10$. What did you expect?
I don't think this is true… I just saw a copy of Doom Dark Ages at Walmart for Series X. I had to do a double-take to make sure but I am like 100% sure it exists.

But like… these hot-takes from regs calling something a flop without any scientific knowledge and not actually being able to state it factually or not. I dunno it's weird. Can you state something is a "flop" if you're just casually looking online and cherry-picking data because you're looking for stats to support your pre-determined point of view? 🤔

I suspect there is a lot of soul searching going on at Microsoft about this.

It cannot be sustainable to make full scale AAA games if these sales are the result. It just can't.

Something's gotta give.

Very few games are as undeniably a flop as this just based on what we can actually see already so it is probably worse than we will ever imagine.
Microsoft chose to price Doom The Dark Ages at £70 - which is an insanely high price for a game.

I purchased the premium edition because I'm a huge Doom fan - but the average gamer is going to look at that price and think twice.

Secondly, gamepass has likely cannibalised a lot of sales.

If this game was not on GP, I'm sure it would have sold 2 million by now.

Gave it away? 🤣 Is this the Gamepass is free rhetoric?
Bruh, for years people embarrassed they were paying full price for gamepass told us they bought 67 years for a penny each. Was that not true? Who here is paying full console price msrp for gamepass?

I mean, pennies isn't free, but pennies ain't really money anymore either.

If it wasn't free and everybody bitched about the price I wouldn't feel to bad about shelling out money but every internet chad from here to timbuktu got it for pennies on the dollar for life so why should I pay 70 bucks for a game they got for pennies unless I have no other choice(because the game is too good)?

I apparently missed the pennies deal so gamepass is no longer an option for me.

Also, everyone, gamepass didn't cause this exclusively. Other gamepass games like Expedition 33 did great. This game just wasn't what the market wanted. Remember you can't define this failure without Doom The Dark Ages itself at its heart. Even though gamepass is also a game destroyer, this specific game had much more going against it than just gamepass.

I reckon people just didn't like eternal. I knew a guy that would jerk off to doom 2016 but hated eternal. I guess the change in direction left a sour taste.

Initially I thought eternal looked weird and didn't like the change in art direction. However, I got past it and loved the gameplay.

If your sequel is decisive, the third game will suffer.

PC gamers love RPG games so I'm not surprised Expedition 33 did well. Furthermore it reviewed extremely well.

Personally I do not understand why E33 is so popular. I found the game boring as shit. I'd rather play Doom.

Yeah, it's wild to me, honestly. I think people were just excited about a new IP, along with a new turn based RPG, and I mean the price was much more enticing as well. $49.99, but on PC a variety of key sites have it between $30-40. $69.99+ is just a rough ask for a lot of people. Especially if they're unsure of the content, don't like that it's just a campaign, etc. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if people are just waiting for a price drop + patches/DLC.

For the price of Dark Ages you could buy Clair 33 twice.

NEOGAF posters as a whole seem to be really negative towards games in general these days. Is it all Fanboyism or something worse?
Its still solid game, especially for ppl who like fps genre, but to sell number of copies enough to not flop it has to have different kind of appeal, doom 2016 kind of appeal, and believe me bro, even if all active gaf members(say at least 1 post this month) bought 10 copies each it wouldnt make a dent in whats needed for this game to be profitable.
Lets not think of ourselfs as a core of a gaming world like particular rainbow forum does, we are but an extremly tiny minority of hardcore gamers who are small niche compared to casuals ;)

Aren't the majority of AAA console games priced at $70 this generation? Why is this being talked about like an outlier? 🤔

You will be hard-pressed to make any convincing argument that this game isn't just as much worth the standard price of a AAA game that other games like Assassin's Creed, CoD, Last of Us, TotK, etc. are. I don't see how this game is somehow sub-AAA.

Price surely playing a factor here. Looking at Steam charts the only thing above it which is above $100 AUD is Fifa.

You just can't be expecting masses to fork out $120AUD for games regardless of what retired Video Game execs have to say.

It's now fallen behind E33 on PSN... Yeah, it's not performing well.

It's 45th on Steam...
Well-deserved, the game is not a locked 60 FPS and the dual sense implementation is lacking compared to Eternal. IMO it also doesn't look that much better than Eternal, I prefer the cleaner high Res look than worry about accurate shadows and reflections. If you are asking for 70 GBP, make sure that your game checks all the boxes, I am not paying that much for average graphics and gameplay.

Everything about where Doom went is what I dont want from the franchise. Kill the story and whatever bullshit they have going on. Doom 3 understood its mission, but the technology wasn't quite ready at the time.

Doom 2016 steam max concurrent - 44,271
Doom DA - 31,470

We arent talking some massive gulf here between the two.

Utter tosh, people like are just showing themselves up talking such utter nonsense

It's a great game and that's really all that matters, the concern about sale's is only warranted if it's a complete disaster and a studio is in danger of closing because of it. That's obviously not the case here though.

Its a good game, I finished it last night and overall enjoyed it.

I do think all of the bright colours even though they are part of the games mechanics are a bit much - I think this would have been much better as a full horror style game. Slower pace, tighter and more focused battle areas rather than huge maps and a creepy atmosphere would have been awesome.

they have enough data to know that a game can be on game pass day one and sell well at the same time.

I really wanted this to buy this game but learning that it didn't had a full disc in it made me pass. Made me do a hard pass. Still want to play it but I prefer values over stuff like this

It has no replay value either and selling it for that price is ridiculous.

I have no idea why I bought the 200eu edition, knowing that it was singleplayer only. I mean sure, it comes with the "DLC" (whatever that will be) and the collectible statue of course but the game certainly wasn't worth its base price.

Becoming better and better at the game is replay value enough for me. YMMV

There's not even a reward tied to that which is insane to me. Oh unless you want to count the Slayer skin that you never see outside of cutscenes?
Agreed. It needs way more challenges, they need to bring back Slayer levels from Eternal, and more cosmetic unlocks. The game is a humongous downgrade from Eternal there.

Ironically this is where Gamepass comes into its own
Alanis Morissette Reaction GIF by MOODMAN

It comes in to its own by creating games that are not affordable on the service.

Doom is the first game I've seen priced at £70.

Every other new title on steam ranges from £40 to £60.

70 USD is cheap. That's like low £50s.

I couldn't buy it if I wanted to because I don't have an RTX card.

2016 runs at 4K 120FPS at max settings, Eternal also runs fine, so I'm not sure why RTX was required this time around.

Personally didn't care for it much. I can understand why they tried to switch up the formula but it didn't work out. Doesn't feel like doom to me

Is anything wrong with the game? I don't approve of Dooms after 64, however I thought Doom: the Dark Ages received good feedback.

Yeah, I loved Eternal, a lot more than 2016. Still the best of the three IMO.

So for me the bar is set at whatever price recent AAA Xbox first party titles have been. So, Avowed, Forza Motorsport, Starfield, etc. if it's more than any of those were **when they launched**, then yes I'd agree it's too high.
