Doom: The Dark Ages |OT| Mod City

Am I taking crazy pills? Eternal clearly looks better comparing these two videos:

Added a 5090 video too just in case.

I think DA looks far better in terms of how complex and detailed it is, more closer to 'real'. Eternal has a much cleaner 'video game' look though, so I can see preferring it.

I still have to play Selaco! I'm waiting for it to come out of early access, but I'm glad to see it has your endorsement.
Best indie shooter! Think a big update is probably happening at the end of May to celebrate it's anniversary. I think it's the story(voice, story elements) update.

It's a nice blend of Doom, Half-Life, and F.E.A.R.

Game has things I feel Doom should of had at launch like mutators to change up the Campaign.

Would you say it's better than something like DUSK or Ion Fury? Those are my favorites so far.

In any case, I'm already sold on the game. Tried the demo (a few years ago?) and I could feel the F.E.A.R dna being there for sure. Way better than Trepang2 in my opinion, I think they fumbled that one a bit.

Just beat the game on Ultra-Violence, absolutely amazing and in a few months I will try Ultra-Nightmare. To me this is the best in the new Trilogy and definitely the best Doom game to date, this game really deserves a co-op horde mode!!!

Dusk and Ion Fury is more arcade like. Selaco has a more Half-Life kind of feel or progression. Which I prefer those. And Selaco can be hard and requires you to be more tactical and make decisions on whether to be defensive or aggressive and react to enemy types accordingly.

For me Selaco just destroys those games in every way. If you want weapons with OOMPH then Selaco is a good one.

Oh and let me tell you I was getting the good Doom 3 vibes from this game. One of the main reasons I fell in love with it.

You got me at FEAR already, no need to sell me on the game even more lol.

Been checking some videos and they sure seem to have nailed the John Woo shootout feel with all those particles and shit flying around. Love that!

It'll be great but I think I've sidetracked the the thread enough. Needs to get back to Doom. I think if they want to improve Dark Ages they need to bring the features and bonus playable content that Eternal has. Horde modes, Master Levels, Mutators would bring a lot of longevity. I think they focused on the spectacle a bit too much especially with the focus on block and parry.

I'm so stoked for the day it comes out of EA, that's basically what I'm waiting on as well.

This is probably my favorite of the 3 doom games since 2016. I like the shield gameplay mechanic, I like the dragons and mechs, and I love the visuals…the change in setting is really cool. The music is good, perhaps not as great as past games, but still very good.

i've decided to give up on what i expect from the game (coming from what i enjoyed in eternals) and decided to just enjoy the game as is
it became more fun that way and i'm having more fun now

Exactly. Plus I stopped obsessing over 100%ing each level or not using revive sigils, or the objectives.

Once you just play to play it gets better and better.

That clearing map OCD in this game can turn it into absolute slog. I haven't opened the map yet.

Did that in chapter 6, learnt my lesson.

So…

You die

But the Doom Slayer is such a badass he steals the ferryman's boat and returns to the living world?

His rage is what keeps him alive, and I absolutely love it. This and the whole cosmic realm portion were definitely my favorite parts.

Game is improving with every chapter! Just done the first flying one. If it keeps this pace, it'll definitely be my favourite of the new dooms.

Special shout out to the destruction and physics. An unexpected bonus!

Between the destruction, physics, amount of enemies and scale of the levels this feels like a next gen upgrade.

Of course to half of GAF this won't matter as they only care about high resolution rock textures.

Why most games on game pass dont support dualsense...? its annoying
hello how u?
it works fine for me, all features are there, haptics adaptive triggers and all

thanks for reminding me actually, i mean i play with mouse at highest difficulty but i didn't even think of trying it. effects are so cool i'd probably replay the game at a lower difficulty for effects alone. i really liked how much adaptive triggers and haptic effects there are. sadly i'm not good at playing fps games with gamepad so i will keep it for replays

Really??? When i tried it 2 days ago, it didnt recognized it at all. Gonna check it out tomorrow

Once the game click, it's awesome. I'm having way more fun with this than with Eternal, which was a fucking chore by the end. Turning on auto sprint is a must though, imo. I do find myself jumping and meleeing to trigger a more "old fashioned" glory kill though, now that I'm past half way through. Gives a more visceral feeling and i wish they found a way to incorporate them in the new systems.

Got to the chapter in
Hell
and the level of detail is overwhelming to take in. Really feels like an old school Doom level come to life. I fall more in love with this game the further I get in.

Is there a new game plus?
not sure if answered but you can re play the game from the first level with all upgrades and weapons.

Wrong. Game was just trying to be too much. I don't give a fuck about "evolving" Doom. Doom is about horror and puzzles and blowing the shit up out of demons with a shotgun and other nasty weapons, not limiting my shotgun shells to make sure I use other weapons to try create havoc. Fuck that game.
Except Eternal was horror and puzzles and in The Dark Ages, it still forces certain weapons on you to be more effective against certain enemies. There is still forced mechanics in Dark Ages, Eternal haters just trying to clutch at straws.

A bit after the fact but finally started this today. Vehemently disagree with the folks who say this game doesn't look good or any similar kind of comments.

Shit looks metal as fuck and the pace is unlike any/many other shooters out in the market.

I like that the Slayer is treated like someone launching a fucking Nuke, a tool to end all conflicts.

Technically it would have exactly the same CCU, you'd just see those players on Steam instead of only Microsoft and/or id seeing them on Game Pass.
Yeah, but people just watch the steam numbers and make assumptions on that CCU since that's the most transparent.

For games without Game Pass launches, I think that's fine to extrapolate from. You can understand sales potential and popularity. For games with Game Pass launches, it's less sound - especially where Microsoft is funding the development and uses Game Pass performance to understand subscription potential.

Very good game. I'd rank the new trilogy in this order: Eternal > Dark Ages > 2016.

Like Eternal, Dark Ages is very engaging because of the mechanics. 2016 continues to feel like a foundation for the other two, which makes it a less interesting game. All three are leagues better than Doom 3 will ever be.

I look forward to the DLC to see how this leads into 2016.

Wasn't sure how I would feel about a Doom game having a lot more cut-scenes, but the direction and execution is pretty damn good.

I'm genuinely surprised at that part.

I've been saying this since the release of the gameplay trailers. The IQ is not as sharp and Eternal is much prettier/next gen looking in comparison.

I'm playing on PS5 Pro and compared to Eternal it's pretty blurry, image is just not clean. It's a faced past shooter, it really didn't need forced RTGI etc. To sacrifice IQ. I'm really annoyed HDR doesn't work, can't even turn off in game on console, I have to turn HDR off at console level. Like you buy this day 1 and you pay good money to experience and first level I can't see shit and just deflated because I'm playing with settings because of a broken display image instead of just enjoying the game. This to me is unacceptable, like someone at id fucked up. I'm not sure they were aware it was broken. Even with the stupid colourblind temporary fix, it still looks better just turning HDR off for now.

Beginning Chapter 5. That Titan level was boring as fuck but the game itself is growing on me. Really sad they wasted millions of dollars and likely thousands of hours on these cinematics - misplaced resources to say the least. No one gives a shit about the story, guys! I just skip the cinematics, can't stand all that nonsense. Just give me stuff to shoot, damnit.

Gameplay - improving with more weapons/abilities but I do not like the automatic slowdown on parry (perhaps this is removable via options, I haven't checked) - it kills the frantic flow of the combat because I have to spam the melee button through the slow mo for the finisher to land in time. I like that actually just shooting enemies really fucks them up here, unlike Eternal where you had to hit a weak point with the right weapon. Nice change of pace.

Also does anyone else miss the ability to fast travel around the map at the end of the level to cleanup the secrets?

100% done, Enjoyable game but it suffers without Mick Gordon's soundtrack and the combat overall felt less refined than Eternal.
Aesthetically, it kinda feels like they wanted to go with quake 1 look.

Cutscenes look amazing, game's graphics are superb.

Solid 7/10 imo, gonna go back when they release the DLC and path tracing, unfortunately it didn't live up to Eternal.

How do the secret areas work. Are they accessible from the start or is this like Metroid where you need to come back to them later? The game doesn't really explain how to access these areas. I see some hidden items but not really sure how to get them. My best chapter was finishing 75%. But mostly barely getting 50%.

Some are accessible right away. Look at the map, look to see the room if it's locked up where you can enter, look around area, etc.

The ones that require back tracking are generally the ones for a purple key door. Need key first to then access. The rest is generally available then and there,

It's called exploring, look for breakable walls, climbable surfaces, switches, things you can jump to, holes that drop into subterranean areas etc. Every secret can be found your first run through a level though the game is arguably best played by just playing "naturally" then going back to wrap up what you missed after completing the story.

I'm at the middle of the game, it gets better and better with the gameplay but man i still think the story/cutscenes are fucking stupid/boring, level 6 was huge 👍

There's a mod being worked on for that. Looks way smoother without the slomo.

An option for that would have been nice. Also it would have been nice to be able to switch melee weapons on the fly without going into the menu.

Everything within a level can be found in the first try, you don't need anything from further ahead to revisit older chapters.

I'm playing The Dark Ages and it doesn't FORCE any weapons on you against the enemies in the game. And I'm 10 chapters in. So no, I'm not clutching at straws. Eternal was not great. Simple as that.
