Doom: The Dark Ages |OT| Mod City

I wish it's not, the game is an absolute banger and I say this coming directly from E33, I wasn't even supposed to stay playing it but it's so good that a "let's see how my GPU runs it" ended up in me pausing E33 and not giving a fuck lol.

BTW I wish we could turn off speed lines, they are almost impossible to ignore and the game is graphically so beautiful... I'm basically turning auto sprint on and off all the time depending on if I'm in a place I want to contemplate or in a fight in part because of that (also because going fast all the time doesn't let me appreciate the amazing art, almost everything in this game is a setpiece for me).

You can turn off the speed lines, look in settings.i dont understand why people dont go to settings and check if there are options to remove things that they dont like

I'm only at chapter 4. It's strange for a shooter, wouldn't call it that yet. I feel like I use different variations of shield attacks and melee attacks more often than shooting.
It does become challenging though, I changed to ultra violence and then I started dying. It becomes awfully hectic with all the needed special attacks and parries and finishers etc. Especially on PC for me when using keyboard and mouse, I need to try using a controller, I stumble around on the keyboard when I get stressed.
I played Eternal with mouse and keyboard but had to swap to controller for this one. My keyboard hand always cramps up these days.

I'm just a random dude but I'm loving Dark Ages. I find the combat wildly satisfying. I played a ton of melee borderlands so maybe I'm sorta conditioned for it. Just zipping around smashing into dudes and yeeting my cap shield around is really fun. I also think the super shotgun and the chainball gun feel weighty. The game reminds me a lot of God of War and I don't think that's a bad thing.

In general I don't even like WASD controls. For me who grew up playing on computers 40 years ago it feels like being stuck using arrow keys when you had no joystick to plug in. It's extremely old school really. And pressing E and R and G and Q without a miss ain't happening if you have to do it reflex fast.

But I've accepted it.

Switch 2's left joycon stick for movement and right joycon for mouse aiming is in theory perfect. Analog movement plus mouse precision. 👌 I'm excited to try out Metroid Prime 4 that way.

Gave it a listen. Definetly below Eternal by a wide margin, but still a cool soundtrack imo! Some very nice riffs in there for sure.
I play guitar and idk I think the drums are smothering the guitars, and too much synth as well, I can barely make out the riffs.

Listen to the first 20 seconds of "In Due Time" by Killswitch Engage, before he starts singing. I wish they had something like that going, guitar focused with crazy energy. That band in general would fit the theme, lots of light vs dark there, I'm sure they could do something great for a DOOM game. But would cost too much money I assume.

I personally didn't. Found it butt ugly , low textures, and played mindless.

Chapter 5 dragon level though? That's the best part of the game so far.

Let id make a new panzer dragoon game, fuck!
I just wish they hadn't maintained the dodge mechanic. Everything slows to a crawl when you have to attack something - just a basically static lock-on screen while you wait for a green thingy and then its a QTE to dodge up and down or left to right. Should have just let us strafe and dodge regular fire, the dragon controls well enough that this would have worked and been a thousand times better in my opinion.

Tried this originally up to chapter 7 on my PS5 Pro. Today I tried it on the Digital Foundry recommended settings for 1440P on a 3080.

Firstly, HDR on PC works perfectly so the game is correctly bright/dark, etc and I can notice details hidden on the PS5 due to shading like details for the inside of the shield when I hold it.

Looks FAR more impressive for textures, reflections, fire, clouds, etc. What I expected it would look like on my PRO because I've played plenty of other games that look better on PS5 Pro with more going on.

Lastly, and perhaps even more importantly, I know they added speed settings you can tweak, but on the same settings for Pro and PC, the game 100% moves faster on PC. I played with a controller on both versions, so it isn't mouse keyboard responsiveness or something, it's definitely character movement. It seems they intentionally slowed it down for console players...

Edit: Wait... there is no speed setting on PC. WTF?! id... come the fuck on. You neutered your play experience for console. GET RID OF SPEED ENTIRELY, or at least make the default be same as PC. Let some slow daft retard turn it down... not assume we are all delusional chimp men who need baby games because of the input device.

So stupid.

I've yet to play Eternal. I've played Doom 2016 a bunch, so that scratches the itch for me. Both Eternal and Dark Ages looks great, but not enough to prompt me to buy them yet.

Nvm. Speed setting only shows up in game not at main menu.

However. I stand by 100% speed on nightmare on pc and console is not the same speed.

Exactly what I needed! Finally a game with no bullshit - just nonstop mayhem. :messenger_grinning_smiling: The new Doom is pure adrenaline: barely a moment to breathe as you blast through one insane combat encounter after another. Every level throws intense arenas, hidden secrets, and power-ups at you - it's hard to put the controller down.

The new shield mechanic is a total game-changer - you can charge enemies, block incoming fire, parry melee hits, even toss it like a demonic boomerang. It adds way more depth and options to combat beyond the classic run-and-gun formula.

Weapons feel chunky and satisfying, upgrades are cool, and the enemy variety keeps things fresh.

And honestly? Huge respect to the devs for still making high-quality single-player FPS games. In an era overloaded with multiplayer, battle royales, and live-service stuff, a focused, brutally fun shooter like this is a rare gem. Pure fun!

I've looked for but there are too many options. Do you mean the screen effects option? Cause that disables a bunch of other effect doesn't it?

Firstly, HDR on PC works perfectly so the game is correctly bright/dark, etc and I can notice details hidden on the PS5 due to shading like details for the inside of the shield when I hold it.
Is HDR working well for you on Windows? Because it has always been shit for me so I only use it on Linux.

I'm around chapter 12. It's really fun to play, which is a massive improvement over Eternal.

The story and narrative are just whatever; luckily, there aren't too many cut-scenes. Also, it's weird hearing army-like chatter in a Doom game, and I'm not sure if they had that in Eternal, but I don't remember it.

I started on "Normal," but it was so easy that I bumped it up to the difficulty just one notch below the hardest in-game. It's still pretty easy, which is odd, since I absolutely suck at video games.

Having to use color-blind mode to get decent HDR is a bummer.

My MAIN PROBLEM is how the map is structured. Not that it's not fun, but it basically becomes "open map, go to X, grab Y, reopen map," which feels pretty lame. It's still fun, but I'd love better level design so you don't need a map that shows 99% of the collectibles.

I'm also only using the super-shotgun and the double-barrel energy weapon, as I don't see any reason to switch to anything else.

Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?

Initial impressions:

As an id and Doom fan I want to start with that I know this game is fantastic, like always and will be among my favorites in the end. But I can't help but feel disappointed after playing the first 2 levels:

-the visuals: this is a fully nextgen game by id, one of the best tech wizards, yet barely if it even looks better than the last game? Huge disappointment and not what I expect from them

-the gamey visual elements are so out of place like the floating, highlighted items, door colors, etc. I hoped they would get rid of these as I thought they got a lot of criticism for this. They have these cinematic cutscenes and visuals paired with gamey elements that stand out like a sore thumb. Why are they insisting doing this? They did this part perfectly in Doom 2016, everything was placed in the game world providing immersion. No one complained about this as I remember yet they had to come up with this BS for Eternal and for Dark Ages again.

-the breakable objects and interactivity are cool, this is the only thing where I see a clear improvement

-weak weapon sounds again after Eternal. How did they fuck this up again? This was also perfect in Doom 2016. How the hell did they did this worse for twice now? I don't get it

-the rumor was true, the ps5 disc has nothing on the disc, ridiculous, shame on everyone who decided to do this

-the ingame menu system is atrocious, checking out the codex pages is really weird where you instantly close everything by pressing circle (which would mean "back" in any other game)

Well this is something I was thinking about. But tbh, Iv never really been a fan of doing this. I always like to try and play a game the way the devs have intended. I don't think I need to spend 10 minutes tweaking things like that before I play. Performance settings I think is fine to tweak. But game changing/specific things, nah.

More or less agree with this. I think out of the three this game is the weakest for me. It's not terrible or bad. But 2016 is the best, then eternal and now this. I really thought the mech parts and in Particular flying parts are a bit boring. I don't feel like this is a doom game

So the super shotgun is king in this game?
What's your go-to weapon?
Cycler and Chainshot are my mains for mid and close range. Super shotgun for corridors and caves. Rocket launcher for long range and in scenarios where you're being assaulted by multiple heavies at the same time. Chainshot is a genius design. Kudos to whoever came up with that. 🤘

Chapter 6 now. Still not feeling it. I think they're adding too much stuff, 5 hours logged and they still throw in tutorial screens.
It's good but not what I expected.

The mechanics finally clicked with me. Was banging my head against the wall for a minute lol.

I see how everything works now, like the proper way to play. I was wondering when that would happen. Same thing happened with Eternal. I went from "did the play test this?" to "oh this is fucking dope."

Gonna give the OST a listen since it's been made available on Spoti:

It sucks massive balls. Soulless videogame-whatever-metal. 35 tracks that sound mostly samey, be it the metal ones or the drone/ambient ones. Very generic. Now I also understand why the metal tracks don't fit that well into gameplay: they're too sonically full, walls of continuous sound, all peaks no valleys, gameplay sounds have nowhere to sit. On top of that, a shit ton of sub frequencies making things worse (high pass around 60 Hz would make thigs better already), together with an atrocious production, as everything is squashed, transients are almost obliterated. "What lies below" and "Apotheosis" are the less offensive tracks when it comes to all the aforementioned issues, they should fit much better within gameplay compared to the other tracks.

In general, I've been watching streams here and there, not impressed. Or at least not 80 bucks level of impressed. There's something off about the graphics, the wow factor is definitely missing; everything looks very blurry, materials fail to translate visually, everything looks muted and dull, and one major head scratcher: enemies. Enemies look really off, they look flat and dated. Take the Mancubus, fella looks like he came out of a 2013 game. I don't know, I expected more from 2025 id Soft, I think the game is pretty mid overall and the IP is doing gigantic heavy lifting. I am going to wait for a sale.

I love the gameplay. It's great. But the sound track and overall muted graphics kind of are a let down. Gonna shelf till they patch something. Not sure but Doom Eternal looks so much better on console. Shame.

Played for 1 hour. Graphically looks worse than Eternal so far.
Not sure about that but I am baffled it's such a resource hog when we have something like Witchfire which not only looks better but also does the open-zone thing much, much better (no invisible walls for starters).

It's not a bad looking game by any means but it certainly does not warrant such poor performance across the board (thanks ray tracing!).

Btw, check out BenchmarKing analysis, very good findings regarding async compute and reflex:

also give him a sub, the guy does an outstanding job and deserves a lot of support

There's a windows app I downloaded from the hdr settings. Tuned it correctly, and looked up my monitors nits. Set it in game for correct nits and then tweaked saturation up a bit to give it more color pop. Looks great!

But I'm too much of a bitch to replay the levels on pc so I'm now on chapter 10 or 12 on console and just dealing with the inferior version.

Oh well. No more day one buys for id. Lesson learned.

Chainshot? Really? Kinda sluggish for my taste - though to be fair, I haven't equipped any upgrades yet.

Tries a couple levels on my 3060/i5-11400 laptop. Medium settings, DLSS 4 'Perf'. Getting about 80-90fps. Definitely 60fps+. Game still looks pretty good. I think there's a mod that lets you use DLSS+FSR FG on Ampere. I'll have to try that sometime.

Pales in comparison to my main 5800x3D+9070XT. Still fun to test.

Chapter 5 and growing on me! This actually captures the feeling of the original doom much more than 2016 or Eternal did, and may end up being my favourite of the three new dooms!

Up until level 18 and 19 that's what I was running. They punish you on these levels on Nightmare and, like you said, I've had to run with the Super Shotty and also the rocket launcher to get through.

I wish there was a way to switch melee weapons on-the-fly. Maybe there is. If not, seems like a missed opportunity.

I quite like it and appreciate that you can tone it down to old man/gaming journo settings but I'm suffering from system overload with all the stuff i'm supposed to absorb. It also doesn't help that every time I go back to it it's reset all the changes I make to the controls.

Bought the soundtrack and have listened to it quite a bit, honestly overall I think it's very strong. different very much a triptykon/celtic frost monotheist vibe with even some death metal influence in some songs. Which honestly a more death metal inspired ST would be amazing. (This screams doom)

Got to the chapter in
Hell
and the level of detail is overwhelming to take in. Really feels like an old school Doom level come to life. I fall more in love with this game the further I get in.

Is there a new game plus?

I don't think there is a new game plus. Would be nice, but probably in the DLC you get everything unlocked like in Doom Eternal DLC.

On mission 11 and about to just call it quits.

Fired up quake 2 which was $3 bucks on PSN and never tired it before and god damn this fucks!

Well I've found out that HDR is impossible to get working on a Samsung TV using an AMD GPU on windows, on Bazzite using Gamescope it works great... I think I should be thinking on getting a new TV from another brand

I have an Asus monitor but my tv is a qled from Samsung. The room I'm in is fairly bright most of the day so I was told qled is better than oled if the space is lit up you game in.

Has great features like hdr, vrr, 120hz, 4k, etc but a part of me does want to try and LG Oled some day when other necessary upgrades are needed.

Since it's arguably the peak weekend hours we can safely assume that The Dark Ages is not doing so hot. Down 3x from Eternal and even behind the modest 2016. Those are not winner numbers even considering GamePass.

I really don't understand why y'all are so obsessed with this. I'm sure it's more than fine.

What's the big difference between these releases? One launched on Game Pass. I'm sure plenty of people are checking it out there, especially with the $70 price tag. Even more so with it literally just having the campaign and nothing else. As someone that finished it in under 16 hours, it makes a lot of sense to me. But with overall sales from PC + consoles, I'm sure it's more than fine.

I rank it last behind 2016 and eternal. The gameplay is braindead. You can win by spamming shield and melee.
If you're playing it on a low difficulty, sure.

That makes me so happy. I played Quake 2 SO much around launch because our family got our first PC around that time. I have SOOOOO many incredible memories with its multiplayer and mods. Soooo many hours on Gamespy 3D, Mplayer, and Heat.net. I was never really into joining clans and stuff, but Quake 2 was the only game where I did. Our clan won during one of the small tournaments on Heat.net tournies at one point. I wish I still had my shirt and dog tags I won. :(
