How are the characters, story, and side quests in this game?

Characters are mostly weh (though I love Grigori). I don't remember much about the side quests. The main story starts out generic, but it really goes places by the end.

The characters are definitely memorable, and the sidequests are interesting. They're certainly not The Witcher 3 level, but you'll probably spend most of your playthrough doing them compared to main quests, as the main quest line is fairly short if you just go through that (you can get through the game on NG+ in about 3 hours if you just go through the main quests at leisurely pace).

The story is odd. The end part is good, but it's a case of dramatic intro, game happens with little story, dramatic finale. It also doesn't help that if you're paying attention, a sidequest basically spoils one of the more interesting revelations during the final parts of the game.

That being said, I'm glad they chose gameplay over story. I know it's a weird thing to praise an RPG for, but I think focusing too much on a story that might not have been good would've hurt the game.

That combat system felt really good, i do remember that. Is there any chance we'll ever see a sequel?

The more people buy this and talk about it, the better a chance there is.

Fucking lizards in the well.

Is that a new feature?

How's exploration in this game? Is it rewarding to look around or is the game really mainly about the combat?

I found it very rewarding, although items you find in the environment will reset, so it's kind of easy to farm for stuff, and makes it weird to stumble across a secret cache of loot twice, only to find the same exact loot, as if you'd never been there. But I found the game had a lot of awesome low-key secret alcoves throughout the environment. It's important to remember that your character can grab onto ledges and pull themselves up. A lot of stuff is hidden in spots that wouldn't be reachable in most other RPGs. There are very few invisible walls, if any.

Just a little memo for first timers : some quests are dependent on your advancement in the main story and will be unavailable later if you pass a certain point.

I forgot this and I am now locked out of some.

To be precise for those who want :
once you deliver the snake hard to grand soren some early quests become greyed out.

Also beware of some escort quests - they can be really hard to accomplish when they first appear on the quest board, some take you very far in unexplored territory with high level monsters.

Anyone knows how the trophies are handles on PS4?

Same set as PS3 and thus no 2nd Platinum, or is it a separate list altogether?

I wanna buy this so bad but i got battle chasers.
After spending 100s of hours last gen i can just start off with it again in such a crowded month.
Still the best arpg combat to date

I plan on getting it eventually, just not right now because I still have so much to finish. I just hope that it can grab me this time because except for the great combat system, the world and quests weren't all that special. Maybe it was a case of a slow start and becomes great later on.

Played Mystic Knight on 360 and PC.

Maybe I should play a different class this time. An archer or something.

Can't wait to experience the ludicrous romance system again lol.

Different list, plus Bitterblack Isle and a few other trophies for things like reaching level 200 etc.
Even from the Dark Arisen PS3 version?

I already platinumed the Dark Arisen version on PS3. "Same" on the PC version.

I may get it on PS4 again if the PS4 list is different from the Dark Arisen PS3 one.

Ranger is badass. I actually like it more than Assassin/Strider, although Assassin has more options.

I was torn between the two but decided to get DD purely for the nostalgia trip. I reckon they'll both drop in price pretty quickly anyway.

Yeah, PS3 Dark Arisen didn't have any trophies relating to the new Dark Arisen content.

I'm so pumped for this preloaded over the weekend. Never played before but have heard the praise over the years and it sounds right up my ally.

Strider/Assassin good class for newbs to series?

Also can I mix a lil magic in there as well?

Yes, Strider/Assassin are awesome and fun. All clases are really viable overall.

If you want magic mixed with Strider you should go for Magick Archer though.

I still think of the ending in the original without XP pack to have been one of the better in recent years actually.

Yeah, wasn't much written story that was anything between start and endgame, but one of the best boss fights I've ever fought.

Never finished the expansion though.

Hmm.. tripple dip?

Cool thx for input. I can't play till this evening when I'm off work. But I'm definitely jumping in.

Kicking myself right now. Left for work this morning and this was sitting on my porch, must've been delivered yesterday evening. I could've been playing this last night and now I have to wait until I get home!

Ugh my Amazon preorder was sitting in limbo (ordered last Thursday) so I had to just buy digital. Not a big deal but kind of annoying!

Love this game so much, glad that more people will be trying it out. Here are some tips for new players:

1. Don't play on Hard mode, it's really not meant for new players and it's not balanced at all. In the early game everything will one-shot you but then the double xp will make you overleveled and you will kill bosses too fast, robbing you of those epic fights. The increased stamina cost of all abilities is also very annoying. If you really want more challenge then try playing without a Mage pawn.

2. Try out different vocations, except Mage maybe, it's just a weaker Sorcerer with healing. As you rank up vocations you can unlock passive augments that can be used on any vocation. For example Fighters get an aug to increase encumbrance limit which is really nice. I also think it's a good idea to have a mixed stat distribution that you get from playing multiple vocations. If you play only Assassin or Sorcerer to min/max your damage stat then you will kill stuff too fast in the lategame and you will frequently get one-shot because of low health/defenses. A balanced build also allows you to switch vocations at will without feeling gimped.

3. Ignore the noticeboard quests. These were mostly added as DLC and are just boring filler stuff. You can safely skip all of them and imo the game is more fun that way. The lategame quests in the expansion are the exception, those have very good rewards.

4. When you are informed by an NPC that
Quina
has gone missing then you should put the main quest on hold a little and finish this sidequest or else some stuff will be locked out.

5. Let your pawns carry all the heavy materials you pick up. If a hired pawn dies then everything they're carrying will be sent to your stash.

6. Pressing left on the dpad will tell your Mage pawn to buff your weapon, right will tell them to heal you.
