EDGE: The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect

Never understood why people are so against this. Always online is not a problem whatsoever in this day and age. I don't think my Internet connection has gone off in like 2 years. No second-hand games, well Steam has been doing it for years.

How nice for you and your internet.

If you think you're going to get those Steam prices - WAKE THE FUCK UP.

Smells fishy. While you cannot rule out, that they be really so insane to do that and shovel their own grave, they would hit penalties in EU, where I believe this behaviour is not allowed.

Didn't GameStop just announce the closure of 500 stores or something like that? If true, it would appear to lend credence to this "rumor".

1. I don't believe this rumour for a second. The market for people who buy games but aren't connect to XBL is too big to abandon.
2. Is EDGE making stuff up? I believe every game with online aspects will require an online code like they currently do, but that doesn't mean that used games won't work at all.
3. On the off-chance that this is true, which is a 0.01% chance, PlayStation here I come. Although I'm already getting a PS4 either way.

If Microsoft is embracing this you can bet Sony is as well : /

EDGE has been traditionally reliable with their rumors. As someone stated, this is under the "news" section of their website. They're not the type of organization that goes throwing stuff like this around without having secondary confirmation.

This is fucking outrageous. The rumors are just so bat-shit insane that I could see it being true. I will refuse to support a console that has such a system in place out of sheer principle. Fuck exclusive 1st party games, which one gets the better third party support, etc. If your system doesn't allow second-hand games you can get fucked.

What's depressing is how many people in this very thread are "okay with it." I don't see how anyone can legitimately call themselves a gamer on GAF with that attitude that "I don't buy used games anyway." 95% of the games I play are bought brand new. The other 5% are either games that I borrow from a friend or ones that aren't in print or circulation anymore so the only way to play them is to buy them used.

But I'm not entirely surprised at the reaction here. People defended on disc, day one DLC that was piecemealed out. Oh, the days of DLC when horse armor was the worst scam a company could do.

Well, my internet went off for more than a week last month, probably because of the snow...

I'll pass any always on console, no matter if it is from Sony or Microsoft.

Please, today it's easier than ever to know in advance if you'll like a game or not. There are videos, demos, reviews....

And please let's not forget that gaming was always an expensive hobby, so I don't really get that "some people don't have a lot of money" argument. It doesn't make any sense at all.

And the used and rental market has been right there all along to. Funny that.

I don't think internet connections are reliable enough worldwide for them the consider and always online policy for all games.

The online activation however seems much more likely and more or less is logical progression in the path they started heading down with the introduction of online passes on consoles.

Where are you getting that information from?

Well, if this rumor is true, it looks like it wasn't meaningful enough. Because MS is cutting them off.

Or maybe MS is hoping that the desire to play the newest games/systems causes people to get online.

bish gets all the credit :)
That and it's an incorrect assumption that prices won't dive

Developers and Publishers WANT bargain bins, just hard to do it right with a 2nd hand market (I know this first hand)

Games will always go down, you buy when you're comfortable to buy at a price you're comfortable to buy it at

You aren't forced to buy day 1

Explain XBLA and PSN pricing. Not even comparable to Steam and they have no retail/used competition.

I see people defending a shit practice by pointing towards something else as justification.

"Well, they've always had canceraids, so I'm okay with getting canceraids too."

Comparing the sale of used media which every other industry manages to deal with to a deadly, incurable disease. Nice one.

MS is not going to do this, bs, no online, no play, lol, thats not happening, they're not that stupid, always online, why are people knocking this, thats great.

It is mindblowing to me that people actually believe that Microsoft's next console is going to require a constant internet connection when almost half of the Xboxes Microsoft has sold worldwide have never been connected to the internet.

I pray to God, Zeus, Baby Jesus, Allah, Elohim, Ishvara, Q, The Atlantians, Timelords, Vorlons, the Combine, the Forerunners and the Lords of Kobol that Sony wins this generation.

MS and Nintendo are on some bullshit right now.

They can reduce the cost(who knows if they will) and control market prices easier from this kind of model.

That is true i mean i hate the idea but i am sure everyone should see why pubs wants this .
It's a win for them even if revenue goes down and industry get smaller it's more profit for them and help them get closer to full DD .
As you said pubs don't care if used games sales making billions in revenue if they not seeing any of it .

I'm sure people in rural markets would love to get online. It's not their fault there's no infrastructure for high speed broadband.

Sony is the one with Online Passes for all first party games. Makes it funny to see people acting like Sony will save them.

I mean, the used game stuff I can see happening. That's a real possibility, just going on Microsoft's past behavior and how consumers react to said behavior.

There is ZERO chance, I mean NONE WHATSOEVER, the always online portion is right. Or if it is, its only half the story. Too much business would be lost outright; it'd be competitive suicide.

They may be cocky at times, but I don't buy this shit for a second.

Clearly designed to wane people off brick and mortar stores and to make them accept an all digital future.

It doesn't sffect me because I am already 100% DD witht the Vita and Steam, but I can understand that people with less money and data caps will get fucked over this.

Still don't believe it. I'll eat my words if I'm wrong, but I can't see it. At the worst, online codes cost will rise to $20 instead of $10.

I think i'd be okay with these measures.

I don't trade or sell games and i don't buy second hand either, and i have fibre optic broadband. Obviously if you rely on the pre-owned market to play games and have basic broadband you aren't going to enjoy the Xbox, but in a snobbish way i don't think you should be gaming if you can't afford it.

Are there any figures for how many Xbox 360 owners don't have internet connections?

That's an assumption I don't believe at all.

Whichever company does NOT grab on to this would clearly have an advantage.

Its likely because we have been hearing for a long time now its developers that are pushing for no used games. They even tried to get it in for the last systems. At this point its something they are all pushing heavily for.

People keep using the statistics that people offline won't be able to take advantage of the new console. This system is prepping for the future. Will these consumers lack of connectivity online increase or decrease in the coming years? They might not be a part of first adopters, but the likelihood that they continue to lack internet access in the future decreases, not increases. At some point, the majority of consumers will be online, all the time.

Best believe if Microsoft is moving forward with this its because the software companies assured Micro that Sony was on board as well. They wont put themselves out to dry like that.

This has almost nothing to do with the situation. An online pass does not prevent someone from playing the game.

I mean, if you don't have internet, are you really going to be buying the latest console anyway?
Why wouldn't you? A lot of people want to play the latest games without having to play multiplayer and be connected to Xbox Live.
