People are going to shit-bricks if sony announces a similar strategy.

LEST YE NOT FORGET THAT SONY BOUGHT GAKAI!!!

If they wanted to, they could utilize those networks and functions to implement a similarly devious "always online" component.

Seriously, when the fuck did people stop realizing they had the power and not these companies?

Without us, they go under. Without them, we buy somewhere else.

I honestly don't know. It's like people forgot that they hold the power and not these damn companies. I've been preaching this for a long while now. It's just sad to see people just not only be ok with it but to actually eat this shit up and defend the hell out of a company for trying to take away your legal rights.

Been wondering that for a while now.

Once again I'd like to remind folks about Microsoft's attempt to charge for Xbox Live on PC. That really didn't work out so well for them.

If you don't want to see this continue, don't support it.

Exactly. That's living proof right there that if people will stand up for themselves and actually take a stand these companies will back the hell down. If they don't they die and someone will rise up in their place. That's business. Those that listen to their customers survive and those that don't go away. Well at least it used to be that way before customers forgot that they had this power.

I didn't say I was more passionate. I am saying that if I want to play next gen games and they impart these new policies I will have to deal with it.

I am not being a dick but certianly appreciate you going down that road.

Do you play PC games? To me this model has been going on for a long time on the pc, so I guess the line was already drawn a long time ago and this does NOT surprise me in the least. I guess I already went through my "anger" phase over this about 8 years ago with pc gaming.

Make no mistake I don't like these new policies. I just am not ready to stop gaming or not get next gen gaming over it. Apparently to some posters on here... I am a mindless zombie or a dick.... for expressing my opinion... OK.

And what we're saying is gamers have an opportunity right now to take a stand and act against this future. This is our hobby, why should we stand for something we don’t want just because there’s no alternative? That kills innovation. I don’t know about you, but innovation is a big part to our industry and I want to spark it, not help blow it out.

No, I do not play PC games. For a long time, even with Steam’s benefits and the countless benefits provided by the modding community, I always preferred console gaming because the one thing it had going for it, the one differentiating factor, was that I could bring my games with me. No CD keys, no online passes, no one time use bullshit. If this happens, console gaming will have no benefits over PC gaming.

I thought you were being a dick because you keep telling people they aren’t passionate about gaming because they don’t want to play the next games as bad as you. You’re asking people if they plan on playing their 360 and PS3 for 30 years, sarcastically. I know you said you drew your line a long time ago with PC gaming and nothing changed, but the console business has a much larger core demographic that has the potential to push back on this. I’m not ready to stop gaming either. It’s not easy to see the one thing I didn’t want to happen to happen in front of my eyes, but if it does, I have to deal with it. And I’m going to deal with it by not supporting it.

If the next Xbox won't support used games, the PS4 probably won't either.

I hope this shit blows up in their faces once they realize this is going to make people even stingier about buying games.

Noone is saying its OK. I am just saying it has already happened and there isnt anything you can do about it except not buy it.

Except you are being super fucking disingenous because not every PC game has DRM and not every PC game has an always on requirement.

If this report is true, then every durango game would have always on drm.

I kind of like this, because I feel like with things this way we give back to the game industry and not so much the middleman. I'm probably wrong, but thats my opinion as of now.

No other 'industry' is viewed this way. I know we love games, but it's fucked up how this mindset has made so many gamers into fanatical supporters to the point that they view themselves as a support network.

Kinect, ads, DVR, bloatware and now always online and no used games. Why would anyone even want to be a nextbox? It's as if MS are actively trying to get people to stay away from their box.

lol, may be true...sounds very Microsofty.
I'm sure it's not too great a modification to their Windows Activation code...lulz

Game Renting is the next big thing, MARK MY WORDS kids

You pay $15 bucks for a 1-2 month license, then it expires, you want to play the game at a later date, buy another license, maybe it will be discounted, etc. If you want the full game forever or for say a year, you pay a much larger fee like 60-80 bucks.

I welcome our digital overlords...

Lol, at the defending of such a policy. At this point a console maker could charge a fee to turn on the damn system and people would be rationalizing "I never turn my system off anyways. Keep crying internet."

Fuck any company that tries to limit used game sales or trade-ins. I will just stick to Nintendo if this is true.

They're already eating the cost - it's called used games.

Those other companies are competing with Steam. They've set the bar for aggressive sales. That is true though.

I think his point is, once you've killed off the customers ability to sell games, why would the publisher or the console manufacturer even offer an option like that? They would be solving a problem that no longer exists.

Batteries the CRISIS!
I hope this thing comes with a GameCube handle so people can bring it over friends' houses to play games they just bought.

.

One to two months?? Pfft. They'll charge $5 for two days or $10 for a week. They'll never rent a game for a month — everyone would have their fill of it in that time — especially for a mere $15.

Damn, so true.

PC gaming is looking more and more attractive every day for me.

And what would you do if both charge for online or both go the DRM route? No next gen gaming for you?
If I can chime in with my own answer, I'd go PC only, if only for a few years while a transitional period works itself out.

The money I'd use to buy a console, as well as ps+/live, would go to PC upgrades and the money I'd spend on games would stay on games.

As far as I see it, if both MS and Sony shit the bed in the console space I'll just jump ship. However I do think this rumor is complete bullshit. I don't believe either of them are stupid enough to do something like this.

Music industry works this way also. No one really needs to pay for a cd, but you might want to support your favorite artists.

I would be cool with this. If they really are going to get rid of used games, they need to find an adequate substitute.

A lot of people seem to act as though all PC games are locked down in malware type DRM.

To play devil's advocate: a lot of games have been made worse in order to prevent used game sales (with "value-extending" rubbish like tacked-on multiplayer and DLC that comes out months after the original game, not to mention mechanics designed to make sure it takes you longer to complete the game).

Granted, one can extend value in great ways (a prime example: Resident Evil 4's replayability, alternate campaigns, and Mercenaries mode). I'm not arguing against more and better content. But ripping the band-aid off could at least prevent publishers from demanding that every single game have multiplayer, DLC, and so on in order to prevent second-hand sales.

If you follow the argument of "no used games means people buying less games each year", things that extend the life of a game would be just as important as before, since the consumer would look for games that last them longer.

I think the reason I am responding the way I am is because I am pretty use to it on the PC. You dont game on the pc so it makes sense this would not go over well with you. I just went through the emotions you guys are gong through now a long time ago and ALOT of people then were up in arms over it and nothing came of it.

Sadly, even if alot of the posters on here that are saying they will boycott the next gen systems, I don't think anything will change.

Dude or Dudette, the industry would die with rates like that. Clearly you're someone who doesnt carry a fat-back-log. I myself have about 12 games I still want to finish. This policy would allow me to rent one for a month, maybe put 8-10 hours into it, it expires then when I feel like playing it again, I buy another license.

Meh don't care. I never buy used, nor do I trade in games.

I have 160+ games on Steam and I will never be able to resell them and they were all activated online.

But the internet will explode like it always does.

You probably got thos same steam games for $5-10 too. Takes a bit of the sting out of not being able to trade a game when you paid a fraction of what your average console gamer pays. Try buying a majority of your games at $60 then come back and claim not to care.

Exactly. With the money I'd save with sales on Amazon, Steam, etc I could easily afford a good PC. In fact I'd argue that thanks to the savings from the sales I'd even save some money.

We give back when our options are taken away? What in the world? Is it that type of thinking people are delusional in believing is offered when your choice as a consumer is limited without your choice?

I DO game on the PC.

I regularly buy games full price day one on Steam, and have also done so on Direct2Drive and Impulse, back when they were a thing.

Most of what you have said in this topic is complete bullshit.

EDIT: I am in fact fast approaching my 10 year anniversary on Steam.

Alot of the PC games in the last few years have DRM.

I am not "being super fucking disingenous " when I say I am use to it and there is nothing I can do to change it. I also didn't say every pc game has DRM.

If Sony don't go anti-used and MS do, then personally I would hope that nextbox is a huge flop to send the message to MS and other companies that anti-consumer BS like this is not okay.

Considering EDGE is a UK published magazine(where the PS brand is heavily favored)

I'm calling bullshit.

There's no way MS would piss off both its users aaand retail partners.
Plus limiting its functionality to those with online only they'd basically be eliminating about half of their userbase.

The edge article is nothing more than sony fanboyism flamebait.

What have I said in this topic that is complete bullshit?

I stated that alot of posts were being very melodramatic and when those posters realize that the DRM and online happens with the next gen systems, MOST will still buy one of them.

I also was on steam since the beginning so I have no idea how that is some kind of badge to wear or prove anything.
