People who ended up selling their DK1 are really going to come out ahead
Oye sounds like the msrp on this is gonna be pretty high
I missed the kickstarter by like two days and preordered on their website. Was one of the first DK1 orders through that.
... Fuck. Maybe they'll extend a discount or something to the few extra people who backed through the Oculus site...?
They weren't adamant during the campaign that it was only for devs. It was targeted at a hardcore audience willing to deal with a technology in its infancy and developers looking to design games for it. DK2 had a much bigger "devs only" push. I think it's kinda crappy to be bitter about them doing this.
Should I wait for the consumer version?
If you are asking this question, the answer is probably "Yes".
We encourage gamers to hold tight for the consumer version of the Oculus Rift. We promise it'll be worth the wait!
The consumer product will improve on virtually every aspect of the developer kit, which is essentially just an early prototype of the consumer version. This includes comfort, immersion, features, software support, etc... for the absolute best virtual reality experience possible.
So if you're not a developer or hardcore enthusiast, sit tight for now. We promise the consumer Rift will be worth the wait!
If you absolutely must own a piece of gaming history, please understand what the developer kits are more or less early prototypes of the consumer version and with very limited software/game support when they ship. We're hoping the community helps us change that, which is why the Kickstarter is so important! We hope you'll show your support.
I feel the burn too man. But who's to say where the cutoff should be? 7500 free rifts is a heck of a lot to give away. I think I was around 9500 in the grand scheme of DK1 orders. But who am I to complain? The DK1 delivered on it's promise, we got cool cases to boot. Oculus even replaced mine free of charge no questions asked when my unit started crapping out. They are a good company worth supporting either way. And hey, maybe they'll throw us a bone with Touch or CV2 lol..
Wait, this is legit? I saw a 'select your reward' email from oculus with a 2012 date on it and assumed they'd messed something up.
Well, when Facebook bought Oculus, there was a lot of negative emotions regarding them just using Kickstarter as a pedestal to sell out -- basically, they used other people's money to make themselves very wealthy.
This is the right decision to make to reward those people for investing and making Lucky and his cohort multi-millionaires. The message it sends is "You guys made this possible with us, so you get rewarded, too."
It's definitely not something that they were required to do or were expected to do, but it speaks very well of their intent and that they were being honest with their Kickstarter investors.
They deserve a lot of positive press for this.
A development kit?Wait...so what did you get if you backed at the development kit level?
A development kit?
(DK1 to be precise)

NeoGAF men and women: what's the latest "intel" on pricing model(s)?
I've heard minimum $500 but could be coming in at $699-$799.
Ouch on my wallet. Yeah.......
Ditto. I feel like such a ninny for not jumping into the KS when it happened, but buying shortly after.

There's no "intel". Personally I expect more than $350 and less than $550.NeoGAF men and women: what's the latest "intel" on pricing model(s)?

I messaged them asking if we'll still qualify for something. Strongly doubt it (didn't even get the steam credit for Doom 3 being withdrawn), but I'll post the response in here.

Oh, I just assumed that they would still have received the retail kit after all was said and done.
Over $350, but $550 at the most. A couple months ago Palmer Luckey said it would cost "more than $350". Then back in May Oculus said that the entire system, including buying a computer that meets the minimum specs, would be around $1500. Palmer Luckey recently commented on how that's proof that they keep their promises, so the $1500 is still valid. Oculus' website has a page on "Oculus Ready PCs", and they started at $999 from Alienware and Dell, $949 from Asus. Leaving $500-$550 for the Rift.
