Everyone who pledged for a Rift DK is getting a free Kickstarter Edition Oculus Rift

I think, given the whole thing about some backers feeling disenfranchised after the Facebook buyout, this is a pretty classy way to thank those that gave Oculus, and new-wave VR in general, a chance at the big-time.

I missed the kickstarter by like two days and preordered on their website. Was one of the first DK1 orders through that.

... Fuck. Maybe they'll extend a discount or something to the few extra people who backed through the Oculus site...?

I feel the burn too man. But who's to say where the cutoff should be? 7500 free rifts is a heck of a lot to give away. I think I was around 9500 in the grand scheme of DK1 orders. But who am I to complain? The DK1 delivered on it's promise, we got cool cases to boot. Oculus even replaced mine free of charge no questions asked when my unit started crapping out. They are a good company worth supporting either way. And hey, maybe they'll throw us a bone with Touch or CV2 lol..

They weren't adamant during the campaign that it was only for devs. It was targeted at a hardcore audience willing to deal with a technology in its infancy and developers looking to design games for it. DK2 had a much bigger "devs only" push. I think it's kinda crappy to be bitter about them doing this.

I mean, yes, of course it's crappy for me to be bitter about this, it is on some level irrational for me to hate that other people got a nice bonus. All I'm saying is

Should I wait for the consumer version?

If you are asking this question, the answer is probably "Yes".

We encourage gamers to hold tight for the consumer version of the Oculus Rift. We promise it'll be worth the wait!

The consumer product will improve on virtually every aspect of the developer kit, which is essentially just an early prototype of the consumer version. This includes comfort, immersion, features, software support, etc... for the absolute best virtual reality experience possible.

So if you're not a developer or hardcore enthusiast, sit tight for now. We promise the consumer Rift will be worth the wait!

If you absolutely must own a piece of gaming history, please understand what the developer kits are more or less early prototypes of the consumer version and with very limited software/game support when they ship. We're hoping the community helps us change that, which is why the Kickstarter is so important! We hope you'll show your support.

Two years later, it's clear that waiting was the wrong call. It's not Oculus's fault, I'm mostly pissed at myself because it's going to cost me a potentially huge amount of money.

(and yes, I do see that they said "hardcore enthusiast" but the language is pretty clear that it's not, and never was intended to be, for mass consumption.)

Who could have known that they'd give such an awesome perk to backers? But as someone who owns a DK2, I don't think it's off base to suggest that consumers waiting for the consumer edition was definitely the right move. I'm not sure most people using the Oculus Rift for recreational reasons would feel justified in spending $300-400 on bunch of 5 minutes experiences, tech demos and semi-official/unofficial VR version of existing games.

Yeah, I definitely understand why there's a cutoff. Still hurts :p

Guess it all worked out anyways, though. Was able to sell the DK1 for pretty much exactly what I paid for it. Just would've been nice to try a model without the screen door effect breaking the 3D for me.

Wait, this is legit? I saw a 'select your reward' email from oculus with a 2012 date on it and assumed they'd messed something up.

Well, when Facebook bought Oculus, there was a lot of negative emotions regarding them just using Kickstarter as a pedestal to sell out -- basically, they used other people's money to make themselves very wealthy.

This is the right decision to make to reward those people for investing and making Lucky and his cohort multi-millionaires. The message it sends is "You guys made this possible with us, so you get rewarded, too."

It's definitely not something that they were required to do or were expected to do, but it speaks very well of their intent and that they were being honest with their Kickstarter investors.

They deserve a lot of positive press for this.

It's also a really good way to head off the Vive and hit the ground running with a decent install base. Bloody hell :D

NeoGAF men and women: what's the latest "intel" on pricing model(s)?

I've heard minimum $500 but could be coming in at $699-$799.

Ouch on my wallet. Yeah....... :(

Very rad gesture by Oculus! Jumped in at the DK2 and think it's great that the initial backers get a surprise like this.

Ditto. :( I feel like such a ninny for not jumping into the KS when it happened, but buying shortly after.

I backed the original dk1 and then sold it for $800 when I got my use out of it. Now I don't have to decide between the vive and cv1. I can get both! And psvr! This year is gonna kick ass

I messaged them asking if we'll still qualify for something. Strongly doubt it (didn't even get the steam credit for Doom 3 being withdrawn), but I'll post the response in here.

They said in the "ballpark" of the $350 dk2's but definitely more. $400-$500 is probably the safest bet as a complete system with capable PC and rift was placed at about $1500.

Fucking yes!
I'm having some slight money troubles right now (nothing that can't be fixed) so I was pretty bumed about not being able to pre-order tomorrow... but now I wont have to :D
Can't wait to wach porn and play games with this.

Would be nice. But I just checked, I didn't order in January when the preorders opened, I waited until March and the first unboxings to get over-hyped. (And by then the supply was stripped out, and due to shipping delays, I didn't receive mine until August.)

Over $350, but $550 at the most. A couple months ago Palmer Luckey said it would cost "more than $350". Then back in May Oculus said that the entire system, including buying a computer that meets the minimum specs, would be around $1500. Palmer Luckey recently commented on how that's proof that they keep their promises, so the $1500 is still valid. Oculus' website has a page on "Oculus Ready PCs", and they started at $999 from Alienware and Dell, $949 from Asus. Leaving $500-$550 for the Rift.

Oh, I just assumed that they would still have received the retail kit after all was said and done.

We didn't kickstart the consumer version. We kickstarted the DK1. Every kickstarter has to be a project with a final product that can be released at the end of it. We didn't technically kickstart Oculus the company. This is why it never made sense for kickstarter backers to feel 'cheated' by the Facebook acquisition. Oculus's obligation to it's Kickstarter backers ended when they shipped the DK1, and fulfilled all their backer rewards.

If you run a kickstarter, that's what you have to do to. Launch the product you were kickstarting, and fulfill all the rewards you promised.

That's why this is awesome, because Oculus literally don't have to do a single thing for us original backers, they already fulfilled their terms to us completely. That it's grown so much since then, and that they haven't forgotten us is pretty awesome.

You can't kickstart a business. It's against the terms and conditions. And we didn't kickstart the CV1.

Enk

makes good threads.
That brief moment of sadness when I realized that I didn't have the money to get a DK1 until after the Kickstarter ended. Still a very nice and respectable move on their part and I still look forward to putting in my pre-order tomorrow.

Given the controller and bundled game, I'm thinking it's going to be $500. That's what I was expecting to pay tomorrow anyways... but now mine is free and already locked in :)

I'm still pinching myself about it.
