EXCLUSIVE | Microsoft plans Starfield launch for PlayStation 5

I'm intrigued as to who you might think will take up the mantle of last place now MS with all their funds has conceded defeat?

Pretty sure they'll be two consoles makers for the forseeable.

Maybe Apple will come in but operate in a completely different space than Sony/Nintendo ie go super high end and expensive.

No one is taking on a failed brand.
No one, xcept old SEGA 😁

lmao this is actual criminal levels of mismanagement at xbox

and the cherry on top is that everyone knows the game is shit now. how many ps5 gamers will pay full price for this trainwreck?
they will probably release 60 fps patch along with the ps5 version. that may get some attention towards the game. as a concept the desktop ryzen zen 2 can already hit a very stable 60 fps in %90 of the game. only in new atlantis it drops to 50s and it is nothing that VRR can't fix.

as a matter of fact it is very possible they will push fsr 3 + 60 fps patch together. so with fsr 3 game should hit 120 fps interpolated from baseline 60 fps. that could be compelling for some, playing any decent FPS game at 120 fps is fun times and even some ps5 folk wouldn't refuse some fun there. starfield is not a super horrible game, it still has its fun moments. it is just that the game just got crushed under its own weight

and we've yet to see fsr 3 implemented on consoles. if they can do that as they're doing right now on PC, they will get some praises from some folks who appreciate high framerate gaming. it will also seen as a massive comeback as this "30 fps" game would be now playable at "120 fps"

60 fps patch + FSR 3 based 60 to 120 FPS interpolation will generate a lot of positivity towards the game. they're just holding out that 60 fps patch for xbox at this point.

Microsoft has too many studios to not go 3rd party at this point. The options are, keep them first party and watch them die off, or set them free and flourish without job losses. They’re making the right, albeit difficult decisions.

Pretty much. When you have that much money invested into software shackling your studios to Xbox hardware isn't worth it. If Xbox Series was looking at being a 100m+ seller maybe it would be a different story but it's quite apparent that was never on the cards. Xbox hardware userbase is far too small for it to be worth them locking their titles to it after spending ~$80 billion in acquisitions to expand their software business.

Xbox Hardware simply hasn't performed well enough to warrant knee-capping their now gigantic software business for the sake of moving a few extra consoles.

This is the truth.

There isn't enough Xbox consoles in the wild to sustain the software side right now.

Honestly... I've been low key pleasantly surprised this generation how 3rd party games just keep coming to the Xbox. Basically everything, unless Sony paid for exclusivity.
I'm guessing the consoles are just so similar that the port effort isn't that big of a deal... or MS has been subsidizing.

Some of us said this long before the rumors, and also, that Starfield would be the ultimate test. It did not move the units that it needed to justify its exclusive status. If their big, Earth-moving game couldn't do it, what is the next best move? Some really thought Microsoft would just need to "exclusify" CoD and all would be well.

"I don't think so, Tim"

The consoles are essentially identical so probs not much work getting ps games on xbox

So we're just believing baseless rumors now?

I just can't see it happening. It doesn't make sense. Microsoft have the money to ride out this bad patch.
Only a fool looks at the last month of smoke surrounding multiplatform rumors and goes “there’s no fire here”.

This “bad patch” has been 23 years. I know I’m a broken record on this point but none of their hardware has ever turned a profit. They came closest in the X360 era but then profitably got erased having to fix the RRODs. That was also the only generation they were remotely close to PlayStation in terms of sales, and they still came in last. Since the XBO, the gap between Xbox and PlayStation has grown significantly, and there’s no chance of ever catching up.

At some point, despite their vast warchest, they have to answer to investors, stakeholders, and other corporate executives. They have likely all looked at the state of Xbox Hardware and the plateaued Game Pass subscription numbers and realized the best way to make a profit off their near 90 billion in acquisitions is to put games where there’s an audience 2.5-3x larger.

This has been building at a fever pitch rate for like two weeks. Theres no way they cant have worked out how they officially communicate this.

WTF is going on at that place lol.

That was the tipping point, but MS had been heading that direction for a long while. Where MS screwed up is that they allowed bean counters to get involved Xbox. Don Mattrick being the most obvious. Steve Ballmer also was an imcompetent CEO.

From 2000-2010, they largely had gamers running the brand. People like J. Allard, Peter Moore and Shane Kim (who was a HUGE douchebag) had a feel for gaming. They saw the success of Wii (not realizing this was a fad and not sustainable) and Kinect. I wonder how much better Xbox 360 would have been if not for the red ring of death. They had a ton of momentum and I very much wonder how much of that was lost from that.

The REAL funny thing is that Microsoft actually had really good rival products compared the competition, but they became followers and not leaders and whenever they were ahead of the game they screwed it up. An example, was that in 2006-2007, they wanted to make Xbox the place to do digital movie downloads, so they tried to force a stalemate in the Bluray/HD-DVD format war. They screwed that up and apple ended up dominating that market until streaming became huge. Zune was an outstanding mp3 player. Surface was a killer tablet. I hear great things about the Windows phone.
While much of the blame for the initial stumble can be put on Don Mattrick, let's not absolve Phil Spencer here.

You see, both Nintendo and Sony had stumbles, too. However, both of those companies regained their balance, studied the reason they stumbled in the first place, and then focused on their strengths so they wouldn't stumble, again. For Nintendo, that was handheld consoles and fun games for all ages. For Sony, it was home consoles and narrative driven action games.

Under Phil's leadership, not only did they do no introspection, they just continued forward. Stumbling the whole way and reaching for anything and everything outside the company to right their step. Then this gen they have basically finally face planted.

Can we do a quick bingo card about the phrases that will be in that messaging and who will be delivering that message? 😄
