amateur is not synonymous with bad work. An amateur is someone who does the work for the love of it rather than for the fiscal profit or other motivation. Even someone whose profession is GIF making would be an amateur in her off hours.

That tends to be the way, yet conversely I'm sure you can think of several professionals who have not acted at a high level. Professional teachers who aren't good at teaching and interacting with kids (nor peers), professional waiters who suck at serving, professional bands whose music is just dreadful, et cetera.
great word, but not the same. Amateurs might spend vast amounts of time in their work without ever seeking payment, and dilettantes can technically be paid for their work (though this is unlikely... ).

No. Only once in my adult life have I stayed up that long and I was having a good time and mostly coherent. We took a flight super early in the morning, just an hour or two after I would normally have gone to bed, and I don't sleep well on planes, and then we were having too much fun at the resort to spend any time napping.
That sounds scary though. One of the leading theories on why we need sleep is that our brains use the time to reset its activity level down to a base amount. Basically throughout the day we receive a buttload of stimulus and new information, most of which gets saved in short-term memory for easy (but temporary recall), filling up our biological RAM. Sleep is the time that allows us to clear a bunch of that RAM and decide which memories to store in long-term memory, what other memory-based associations to make, and which memories to discard or depress. So the reason it's harder to focus and easier to imagine things that aren't there is because your RAM is full of junk from the day.
