I think he was taking the knife to protect himself since they lost their weapons, no way he was gonna murder them in their sleep.

He woke up in the middle of the night to sneak into Alicia's room, he didn't know there was a knife in there before going in, as far as I saw.

And considering Travis was with him watching over him he probably figured out the cat was out of the bag about the whole unstable crazy person thing.
