So you just saw Fantastic Four. You came out thinking "I'm never going to get those two hours of my life back!!" As a non-fan of the comic, you can't possibly understand why someone would like a concept like that, or as an old time fan of the comic you can't believe what they're doing with your favorite heroes nowadays. Well luckily, help is on the way. The handy dandy 6 step program to actually enjoying the modern day Fantastic Four!

Fantastic Four Vol. 1: Imaginauts Collectes issues 56 and 60-66.
Fantastic Four Vol. 2: Unthinkable Collects 67-70 and 500-502 (the series went back to its original numbering at 500) Doom at his best, and yet not cliched and unoriginal.
Fantastic Four Vol. 3: Authoritative Action Collects issues 503-508
Fantastic Four Vol. 4: Hereafter Collects 509-513. These are possibly my favorite issues of the entire series, ever.
Fantastic Four Vol. 5: Disassembled - The weakest run of the series IMHO, but there are two stories in here, and the second story sets up the second best run of this creative team IMHO, which actually makes this trade worth it. 514-519
Fantastic Four Vol. 6: Rising Storm - Man am I mixed about this trade. sigh.. This is easily the second best story of Waid and Ringo's run on the title (which almost went for three years). So why am I mixed? Because of the trade. This trade only collects issues 520-523. However, 524 was the real end to the story and also the beautiful and fun closing to the chapter of Waid and Ringo's fantastic run on the title. So if you want to actually read this in its entirety, you will have to buy this trade, and then head to a comic shop (*gasp*) and pick up issue 524 to read the wonderful conclusion.

Anyway, if the concept of the characters of the Fantastic Four appeal to you at all and you have either never read the comic or haven't read it in a long time, here are some handy links to read what I believe to be the second best run of the series ever, only behind the creators, Lee and Kirby. (Actually, I lie. I think it's the best ever. I just have a hard time accepting that I actually like this run better than the original masters.)

Thanks for posting this. Saves me from having to ask and I was going to before heading to the comic shop at lunch.

how come all the others are called by what they do - invisible girl, human torch, the...thing - yet stretchy guy is Mr. Fantastic? Is it just an ego trip for him?

I really must be the minority but I enjoyed it..... as did most everyone in the theatre. I guess going in with low expectations and not over analyzing every detail like I normally do with comic book movies worked.

It was what it was, a fun, brainless summer comic movie. I actually can understand why they made the changes to Doom so that didnt bother me.

My friends all wanted to go see Fantastic Four, while 3 of them wanted to go see war of the worlds. We all ended up watching Fantastic Four. To think we passed up on war of the worlds. At least we got to see Jessica Alba. :)

I haven't read Waid's FF, but get Byrne's 1980's trades for some good tales.
having bought and read much of byrne's run when it was first published....

Waid's run is better. it is condensed across only about 30+ issues, yet we have it all.
the Frightful Four, bankruptcy, power swaps, extra dimensional travelling, alien invaders, time travel, and yes, even galactus
. Yet across it all, it NEVER feels forced, or feels like they are doing it for the sake of doing it. The dialogue and characterization are top notch, and virtually every single event, that have all happened at least 20 times in the title previously, each one is done in a new way that it wasn't done in before, fresh and exciting.

Anyway, my hype for this ISN'T the movie, but it's because I just finally picked up and read 520-524 (I stopped buying comics for about a year) and it a) made me remember why FF for almost the last three years was at the top of my reading pile EVERY SINGLE MONTH without fail, and b) made me sad to realize that as awesome as it was, it's now over. But, if it's any indication, these are the first extended run of books that I will own in both trade AND monthlies. I'm a monthly collector by nature, but I have already gone back and read the first trade after finishing 524 and plan on going through each of the trades at least 100 more times over the next many years.

The fantastic four has never been as good as they are in these 6 books.
