I'm really digging the Hollow theme song too. It hits me fight in the feels.

Some stuff about the song.

The theme song “Hollow” is brought up, with the interviewer asking what the order for it was. Nomura says that he wanted the song to reflect Cloud’s state of mind, which meant a rock song with male vocals. Also, he wanted the Japanese and overseas versions of the game to have the same image, and so only had English vocals for the song (the Japanese release has the song in English with Japanese subtitles). He also wanted the song to have an image of “rain”.

Selecting the vocalist was done alongside Uematsu (Nobuo) and Nojima. When they talked about the lyrics, Nojima said that he wanted to do it, and he wrote the original lyrics in Japanese. The provisional title for the song in Japanese was “Karappo no Sora” (“Empty Sky”), and the official title became “Hollow” when it was translated to English.

After the nostalgia trip went away after some 30 hours with the game, reality struck really hard to me. This is just another nonsensical trash story driven game for weebs and anime fans that can’t decide if it wants to be an action or strategy game, and turns out to be mediocre at both.

Graphics are truly amazing though, but not enough to force me to finish it. I’ll catch the last bit of the story via youtube just to see how much of a train wreck it turns out at the end.

Never again Squenix.

I think frustration better represents the emotion a lot of people feel. People fail to understand why they wasted so much effort changing story elements, only to result in something of much less quality. Especially story elements the OG was renowned for.

Both personally and from a business perspective, I also found this bizar.

When it comes to actual character development I think they absolutely nailed it and every minute you spend with these characters is worth it. When people say they have ruined the characters than I think that comes from a different interpretation of what these characters are meant to be. So far I havent seen a single comment that could explain what it is that they dont like about the characters. Only that they "ruined" them. But in what way? Making Barret an actual believable leader with very extreme views but also a big heart for the people he loves. Like in the original. Or Tifa having second thoughts about bombing and killing people. Something that the OG game doesnt do, but perfectly fits with her character. Or Aerith actually having fears and issues as well, which will make her fate even more tragic (and explains why she wants to fight destiny in the end), because she has to overcome her fears in order to sacrifice herself. Instead of just one day saying everything is fine, ima gonna die know Cloud.

The whispers didnt really ruin anything during the main story imho. I know a lot of people say they ruined the ending but the main reasons seems to be because "they dont make sense". I think if you think about it they can make sense. Its hard to say whether my explanation is what the team are going for or if their reasoning is even more out there, but I think its fine to have an ending that doesnt explain itself and that you have to put some effort in to find meaning.
At least some people (not aaalll, I know) are just too lazy to think about and dont get it within 5 seconds so therefore it must suck because Kingdom Hearts exists.
I have made some amount of sense of it and to me it was fun to do so and I'm looking forward to where it goes, because in the end all you can do is interpret these events with the limited amount of knowledge the developers have given us so far. I'm also glad that they dont go for a straight remake. I think I've gotten my nostalgia fill with this one and now I want them to do something new within this world.

Another reason many people dismiss this as just some bullshit story device that wont make any sense is...well because its SE and their stories havent been great in the past. Now I cant say anything on KH, I've never played it. But from what I've heard FF14 seems to have pretty good story, even though its being told over multiple expansions and you know what. FF 15 actually has a cool story in a cool world and maybe one of the best villains in any FF. But they were absolutely unable to tell this story. Whether that was due to the development hell and shifting projects leaders or just the inability to tell a story I dont know. But with the 7 remake they have shown that they are able to tell smaller stories, so maybe with a decent development cycle they can improve on their story telling as much as they have improved on their character writing.

As a lover and connoisseur of both action and strategy genres, I think it merges the two brilliantly.

As an action game, you have to be aware of your surroundings in real time, control space in real time, react and predict enemy patterns in real time, and attack and dodge with the right timing and in the right opportunities.

As a strategy game, you need to manage resources like MP and ATB meter, strategize your gear and party composition, and make meaningful decisions in the heat of battle regarding how to optimize your DPS.

These are hallmarks of deep gameplay - meaningful choices leading to meaningful decisions leading to meaningful consequences, with the outcome of the consequences varying wildly depending on on those initial conditions and how the player chose to deal with them.

Andrea was such a stupid and annoying character, at least Sylvando was entertaining in DQXI. Basicly Andrea was just there
to throw the gender word at us

Also,
did anyone called shinra fascists during that attack on sector 7 pillar in the original? I can't remember.
I thought it was so cringe worthy.

I saw that too and thought if maybe the translation team had some "fun" :messenger_expressionless:

I finished this last week. What an amazing game. The combat and the music kept me engaged the entire time. The story propelled me forward, and graphics/cutscenes were so fun to watch.

I'm not sure how I feel about the ending, alot of my final judgement really depends on what happens in part 2.

And finally, the idiots on the "other forum" are so out of touch and completely racist for characterizing Barrett as a racist character when he was, to me, the most relatable and favorite character.

It's really gotten out of hand over there with the moderation I think I'm permanently done with them.

Back to ff7r, after I beat hard mode I put it on eBay and it sold within 1 hour at full retail price. I guess there's a shortage??

100% agree, the character development is great, don't get me wrong there is a lot to love in the game. However, as someone without a lot of prejuduice againt SE (only played FF7, FFX and FFXV) I still really dont understand the direction they went with the final chapters, it's dissapointing really. If I was directing this game I'd damn make sure that the epic scenes in the Shinra building are honored, and improved. They decided not to include this epic scene and change it something mediocre at best.

I think a good example of what they shouldve done is Wall Street, they took what was there with the original and did not scare away, but went all in with it. Imagine if they did that with the OG shinra scene.

I may write more tomorrow but i just finished it after playing all night. It just. kept. going.

For me once it got past all the midgar filler, useless side characters and quests, it really got better. Just focused on the main characters and their mission is what makes this game. Cloud is great and his interactions with Barrett are great as well. Having not paid any attention to the FF7 "extensions" with these characters I'd say Tifa is the one I'm not sure about from the main 3. I'm still not sold on her voice matching the character and I don't know if she translated from OG "paper" to the "screen" as well as Cloud and Barrett did.

But all this ending shit is bananas.

Ugh... I am at Seph and this game is becoming beyond annoying. Got to him twice (final part with 3 members) and die and have to start over that entire 3 wizards 30 mins worth of unskipable cutscene nonsense makes me not even want to finish this shit.

Over all, I like the game, but it's not a 10 imo, and this is coming from a big FF fan, 7 was actually my first PS1 game back in 97.

I've said this, God of War route is the way to go. Scripted and narrative driven game that allows you to explore a reasonable/big area during and after finishing the main story.

Agreed. Gives a sense of exploration without the ton of wasted time just traversing and warring around a. If open world.

Just finished up the spoilercast from EZA crew + Max. Pretty amazing and I'm surprised at how much of the speculation and understanding was on-point from my end. There are some things I don't agree with on Max like Aerith's fate but otherwise it was really insightful. Already appreciated with what they did in the finale of the game, but this provides a new perspective for when replaying. The Level 1-4 though, lol.

Nah open world is way to restrictive. I'd rather they just have some big zones.

Agreed. It's not necessary to go open world to open up the game. Better level design will come from just making it big zones or something like the Xenoblade games.

Reality struck that your post and relation to point makes no sense? Also, you need to reply the older games.

I thought that part was easier than what I expected. If you get hit, dodge. If he takes damage from you, heal right then and there. I literally dodged and went on his side or his back. Then when everyone joins the fight, switch over to Barret and use him as a support character or to get his attention. I had given everyone healing materia early on, so I kept a lot of Ethers. When you see he’s about to do his Avenging Angel, use all your potent items (Elixers, mega-potions, etc). I took him down at a level 32. Don’t be afraid of having to use Curaga and dodge away to use an Ether. Someone can die and if you bring them back they might have their limit break ready to go.

Some parts were absolutely amazing and some were okay. I’m not as excited to replay this, especially since it’s essentially the teaser for the remake, but 30 hours of that teaser made into a game.

I am excited to see Part 2. I finished 7 multiple times over the years and this is a good way to show off what could have been done years ago. It’s still a small piece of the pie. I wouldn’t mind replaying the last part of it. I just would rather play the original again for the complete story. I finished Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core and never wanted to replay them for some reason. Their music was excellent and so was the OST to this.

I can’t believe it’s already out and beaten. No Ruby Weapon fight or Cid’s ship. It’s a very grounded game. It feels like that tech demo influenced the entire game. How I wish I could say more about the Remake. I’m stuck thinking I had this amazing experience that ended before it even got started.

Question:
I've never really played FF7. Got to the end of disc 1 but that's it and forgot most anything. Anyway, my question: Do I lose anything by NOT playing remake *now* versus waiting until the whole remake has been released?

I definitely intend to play it,but I don't feel any urge to play part 1 now, only to have to wait 2-3 years for the continuation and then the same again (and maybe again).

Isn't it better to wait?

You won’t lose that much waiting in terms of gameplay content (I don’t think anyway.) But I will defend one important element playing it now has given me. Culture and entertainment give me joy in two ways: the thing itself and talking about the thing. For me, being part of the zeitgeist of something and talking about theories and speculations with friends for the sequels is a big part of my overall gaming experience. It’s sad to say but sometimes the anticipation of the next game is as fun as the game itself. Because of the hype this (potential) trilogy will have, being part of that conversation adds tons of enjoyment to me that I bring to every trailer, every announcement, and every dumb neogaf post. If I just ignored it all and devoured the whole piece in one sitting, I’d be robbing myself of those moments of anticipation.

But some people don’t care about any of that and that’s just fine too.

I don't really see a compelling reason for or against. Play it if you're interested. Don't if you're not. Wait for a sale.

If you search for the full original story, play the FFVII PS1 game.
If you search for the Remake version of the full and complete story, you have to wait a long time.

Personally, I suggest you to play both the versions of the game.

So I booted up FFXV to see how the open world can feel like in a FF game.

The first thing I have to say is that XV has the worst...and I mean the absolute worst combat I have ever experienced in an RPG. It is a total cluster fuck. With the controls, the magic system, the lock on system, the brainless button mashing, the lucky summons, and don't even get me started with the camera (if you guys think VII Remake is bad, my God....please boot XV up again and get into a fight). What the fuck were they thinking!? It doesn't feel satisfying at all.

I have so much more appreciation of the VII Remake for its incredible combat.

That being said, XV does have some good things going for it. The wildlife and beautiful landscapes is something I'd love to see in FFVII Part 2 (but done much better with rewarding exploration).

Finished the game several days ago and what can I say? I thought it was excellent. Visually stunning, fun, memorable characters, great music, a very good combat engine and responsive controls.

Call me crazy, but even if this was the only portion of FF7:Remake released, I would be satisfied. Even though it’s episodic, it still felt like a full game to me.

Man, this game is great. Just made it to Wall Market after 12 hours in and just love taking in the atmosphere. So far, I've been doing all the side quests and really enjoying them. The combat system in this game has really grown on me and I find myself almost wishing I had random encounters to grind against so I can play around with it more. FFXV's combat was a chaotic mess that never made sense to me right through the end of the game, but they finally figured out how to do a proper real-time party-based combat system well. It's fantastic, actually.

XV is more of a road trip simulator than an RPG. I'm aware that this might sound condescending towards it the way people call things "walking simulators", but I don't mean it that way; it does the whole road trip angle really well and I enjoyed that aspect of it far more than anything else.

The other parts of the game though...

When I think about my first playthough, it might have been a good idea to have a more in depth combat tutorial rather than just those text explanations. There are a lot of intricacies with each character's combat (especially Tifa's) that are really hard to figure out just by reading the text. The VR simulation would have been a good opportunity to implement certain character specific trials (like a fighting game would) in order to give players a better chance at learning each aspect of combat piece by piece.

25 hours at the start of chapter 13. Hopefully have another good 15 hours out of this, I don't want it to end :(

I'm 30 hours in and just started chapter 9.

Love it. I want a "Final Fantasy 7: Dancing all night" game!

Anyone else turn the chat log off? Can't believe it's on like that on default. So much better going around paying attention to what people actually say.

I always turn all subtitles off, even from the main characters. It’s always distracting and I find myself reading text more than watching the characters speaking and what ever else is going on in the scene. I always felt that should be default, and people who want them can turn them on in the menu.

this is assuming English VA’s of course

and I assume you’re referencing the honey bee inn dancing part. I hear a lot of people praising it as being this amazing thin but I felt it was just... kind of okay? Lol I hate to sound so negative but I’m not seeing what’s so amazing about that scene 🤷‍♂️

I'm severely disappointed in this "Remake".

It's not that the game changes the story. TBH I like some of what they did, like flesh out character backgrounds and personalities more for lesser known characters.

It's that this is NOT a remake. Its a reboot. And marking the game as a Remake, making people THINK its going to be a remake, and then it jumps the shark to introduce elements of destiny and stuff and pull a huge "PSYCHE" on the people playing. And some of the elements introduced? like come on, if I wanted to play KH, i'd go play KH...

Oh, and seriously can we get sarcastic cloud back already? I'm replaying through FF7 and the cloud depicted in FF7R is less early-ff7 cloud and more.. ugh... Like I get it. He's gone through shit. He's been through some traumatic stuff that led to him questioning his identity and stuff... But cloud in early ff7 is a sarcastic smartass anti-hero type character. Yes later on he loses the smartalecky attitude and all, but at the beginning of the game he was a dude that came off like a show off, so sure of himself . yet at the same time showed concern for people like Aerith, Tifa, etc. The cloud in FF7R is just... he's all about money yea, consistently saying he wants to get paid and stuff, but he rarely ever cracks jokes like he did in FF7. I mean the jokes weren't constant or anything, but he came off like a sort of jock character. I mean, he WAS basically Zack. But in FF7R, he's way more reserved, just like he is in every compilation game... He doesn't show the same 'tude he did in the first disc of FF7.

For those of you that are working on hard mode, I made a couple of videos that may help on some of the more difficult fights.

Its partly that scene but also I just played the Persona 5 dancing all demo. I'd love a full fledged dancing game with all the Final Fantasy 7 characters. I enjoyed the scene in FF7 but yeah it didnt rock my world probably because other games and media have taken serious characters and put them in similar situations.

Just got to rude on hard mode

lol why tf is he so powerful. He’s absolutely working cloud like it nothing. This game makes no fucking sense sometimes

I mean, I guess that’s why it’s “hard” but still, he leveling me with hits that’s take like 1.5k hp, and I can’t even counter some of his attacks. I’m using stop in him, having Aerith destroy him with wave after wave of Aeroga, so I’m targeting two of his biggest weaknesses, and I’m still getting spanked lol

I started hard mode yesterday and got to the first boss. His HP just won't drop even hitting him with tundaga after tundaga. I had to stop middle fight but I'll try again today. I may not continue if I smell a lot of bullshit.

True.
It is strong already in standard mode.

Rufus instead on hard mode?

P.S:

I finished Final Fantasy VII Remake today.

There are a lot of things I would like to say, but I will take some time to rework everything that happened, and above all try to better understand the ending of the game.
Overall a good experience, just as my experience with Final Fantasy XV was also extremely beautiful, but for several respects I preferred my experience with FFXV compared to this FFVII Remake.
But I will try to talk about it in more detail as soon as I have more time available.

at chapter 14 now. so far my only complaint is the lack of battles! sometimes i just want to grind for a few hours with an RPG, and this game doesn't really let you do that. it's really too bad cos the combat is so much fun. but i feel like this might be the FF with the least combat ever.

That would be FFVIII, haha.

Number of mandatory boss encounters in the REmake, excluding minibosses: about 22

Number of mandatory boss encounters across all 4 discs of FF8, excluding minibosses: also about 22 lmao

The later chapters are action-packed so I think you'll be pleased :)

the collapsed bride run (or is it a tunnel? Can’t remember, but it’s collapsed something) was a great place for quick and easy fights and gribding on chapter 14 for me. The music even changes once in that section, so you don’t have to listen to the same shit over and over again.

And of course there is the coliseum. Just run the three person party tournament. You keep all the exp and ap, even if you quit in the middle of it.

also it’s worth noting that the game awards you with more exp and ap on subsequent playthroughs, so don’t waste too much if you’re still on you’re first.
