Shocker for you - I enjoy both Persona 3 and FFXIII "one character control". It is fine for me, allows me to concentrate on my main, claim it as my own. Same with Persona 3, I'm the MC, others are my friends, they fight together with me. This is a concious design choice. You can disagree with it (and you do) but stop acting like it's a step back. It isn't.
You can enjoy it, that's cool. It's a conscious design choice, that's cool.
It's a step back from attaining full control over your party's behavior (which is a highly desirable quality in an RPG, in my opinion). This is indisputable. No one can argue this. You choose the proper role for the moment, and then are left to rely on a computer 'gambit', if you will, to decide how to behave. So don't tell me how to discuss the game design, friend. I'm observing it, and noting its limitations, which several other frustrated gamers seem to be picking up on as well. Mind you, I'm enjoying it, to a degree. It does permit the battles to move at a frenetic pace, which is exciting. My personal preference is to have more control, even if it it prepared in advance by setting priorities up in a pre-combat gambit menu, if you will. Everyone will have their preference, that's totally cool.
For the record, I'm pretty enamored with the game, but I recognize where it's
indisputably taking control away from gamers.
edit- I got a little heated, and had to reign it back. Sorry, lol
By the way, I was advised by a fellow gaffer to cool it when it comes to this debate, or risk the ban-stick. This kind of discussion is permitted here, right? I mean, if we can't discuss game design, what can we discuss, right? I understand it wouldn't be cool to let it get out of control with lengthy quote-post wars and shit. I just feel like this is an important issue to discuss with this game. I mean, this is a massive game franchise, and the manner in which its played changed dramatically with this entry, and all sorts of issues of player control and agency get raised when looking at XIII, which I think is kind of fascinating to discuss and debate.
