Site has been odd all morning. Did you get an email saying that you registered XIII? You should get 50 points, then the two codes.

Here are the armors, btw:

Glad to see they closed Peter Ustinov's philisophical steakhouse early on, really annoys me when writers use that to pad out story.
Also  at Vanille being English; thought she was Australian for sure.
Um she IS australian

Agreed on Hope. :lol

Talking about FF characters.. they're such outrageous characters, flamboyant and foreign to boot... of course people will disagree on them. But the whole point of that strange mix of characters is to appeal to a wide demographic. For every Snow or Vanille hater in this thread, there are a lot of guys and girls out there who will get drawn into XIII because these characters are there. Were it all normal, neutral American style characters, this series would not have the uniquely diverse fanbase that it does.

You keep on saying this as if there are only 2 different types.

Or that people here are not used enough to JPN characters to have enough of an understanding of them.

Vanille's Japanese voice sounded like that of a typical Japanese young girl and AT TIMES her VA provided some very natural acting, specially in the scenes where the characters were just fooling around. Vanille's American voice sounds annoying because her high-pitched voice is a lot more high-pitched than the Japanese equivalent; in fact, it's probably one of the most high-pitched cutsey girl voices I've heard in video games.

Agreed.

I'm confused, I'm not sure what kind of gamer I am.

I just bought FFXIII, a relatively hardcore game by GAF standards. But I also bought Endless Ocean: Blue World at the same time! That's a relatively casual game by GAF standards!

I'm so confused...

Sonofabitch...

I ordered the soundtrack off Square-Enix's site a month ago, and now I get an email saying it is on backorder. FUCK!

If I would have known that, I just would have paid more someplace else and gotten it a month ago.

EDIT: OMG WTF it says IN STOCK on their website. What the shit.

The actual characterization of Vanille so far (10 hours) is fine. The problem lies in the egregiously bad voice acting (combined with constant moans/grunts that sounds like an abortion put on audio tape). Somehow I don't see that changing regardless of where her arc goes.
And this cute character is like the highlight of the game for me so far :lol

Different strokes for different folks..... I'ma step back from this barrage of other people's opinions and go get a coffee now :p

That's not saying much, though. Penelo was just a pretty lawn gnome.

I just did it now.

I shall now describe what happened in excruciating detail.

Registered at site.
Got email with activation for membership.
Activated membership.
Got email saying congratulations for not being a bot.
Logged in.
Entered registration code into the game shelf.
Waited three minutes.
Got another email giving me the codes (one male, one female).
Entered in the female outfit code.
*Bzzt* "you're not a female. how bout you give your code to a nice lady eh"
Entered in the male outfit code.
*Bading* "success"
Put outfit on avatar.
Realised that it looks like total shit and I just wasted a good amount of time.
Took outfit off avatar.

No it's not about understanding JPN characters. You just don't find her palatable.. while others might.

I don't think we should talk about "failures" of voice acting on something like this. This isn't objectively badly recorded with awkward pauses and bad acting. This is a matter of personal taste.

ok... coffee now.

The menus are SO SLICK.
They are. And fast. There are few things more annoying in a JRPG than sluggish response anywhere in the menu (or when going in/out of it), so I'm happy they pulled off all the glitz without any apparent performance impact.

It's not like I dislike her, or the voice acting all of a sudden - it's pretty good for any NA localization to be honest! I, unfortunately, now am just very concious about every little sound I make.

The last 30 seconds of "The Promise".... so so amazing. So happy they turn that into a similar theme throughout the soundtrack.

She does tend to have a porn actress feel to the voice acting in combat.:lol

Oh and bravo on Final Fantasy finally animating a kiss that looks like it could be an actual kiss.

That is not the issue, it is the erroneous assumptions being made about why I and others do not like her.

As for failures in VA, we can certainly discuss whether that which was chosen for her and how it may harm how she is viewed by the player. Hardly 'objective', but certainly something that can be discussed.

Boco, the problem with Vanille isn't Vanille herself... the problem is that her voice is just extremely high-pitched, unnaturally so. I mean, think of it this way: how normal is it for the American VA to be more high-pitched than the Japanese equivalent? :lol

I mean, even if the acting was fine... I can't get over how goddamn high-pitched her voice is!

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
So anything remotely on par with the 'Laughing Scene' from FFX yet?? I half expected GAF to have posted insane .gif's by now.

Reminds me of problems dubbing anime, when Japanese characters with high-pitched voices (usually uguu~inducing moeblobs) are written in English and the VA attempts to mimic their voice. I doubt we'd even be having this discussion if Vanille's VA just toned down the pitch a bit.

My understanding is that Rise in Persona 4 was higher pitched in English. :p

When I watch those, there is much face-palming involved.

Personally, I prefer if they try to keep the essence of the character while adapting it for the audience. Localization is much more than changing languages, even if the audience enjoys JPN media.

The translation and voice acting is much better than in FFX, IMO. Vanille is pretty much the only one you'll find debate about, everybody else is quality stuff. Although there hasn't been much of a break for a laughing scene in what I've played thus far. Even the sappy love stuff from flashbacks is well-acted.

If you want a character to have a high-pitch, you should hire someone with a naturally high-pitch; getting a VA with a much deeper natural voice and then forcing said VA to mimic the high-pitch of the Japanese equivalent is just ridiculous... and this is exactly what they did with Vanille's English VA.

She was also pretty fucking annoying and rather grating to the ears.

Although that may have been due to constant "SENPAI" screams.

8 hours in two sittings so far :D Pretty damn good. But wow, those certain boss battles are really kicking my ass o_O Had to go to gamefaqs for
the Odin battle
:lol Getting rougher to level up my skills already.

Though, I must say, I find my myself getting really annoyed at Lightning & her attitude. I used to think I wanted another Cloud, but man, she's just an asshole 24/7 :lol I just end up smh'ing at her.

There's no argument to be made. It's a matter of taste. Why do I like blondes and you like brunettes. There's not much of an argument to be had.

To take the analogy further, from my perspective, it's as if you said "this blonde is terrible and she would have been fixed if she were brunette".

And I'm saying "Nothing to fix. I like blondes."

I never assumed anything about why you didn't like her... but I was inquiring, how exactly would you "fix" this voice acting that I already enjoy? Actually I'm satisfied that you have good ideas on that. But again, my position doesn't require a fix. I'm happy.

Vanille's voice acting has perhaps harmed how she is viewed by you, but it is has helped how I have seen her.

Anyway I believe it's just taste. Can we just accept this difference? I respect that you don't like her, and furthermore, you aren't alone (though neithter am I)

They really should have just gotten Nolan North to voice Vanille.

I wouldn't want it to be done... At all.

There's a reason why I play FF. This isn't mass effect, firefly, CSI or something. I don't want some normal American girl.

BocoDragon said:
If you mean that they couldn't dub her into some sort of less-saccarine girl character which appeals to western attitudes, perhaps that's true, but I'm glad they didn't try?

Again, I have no issue with liking or disliking her, I do take issue with the insinuations made above.

Exactly. You can have a cheery and energetic exaggerated character without giving said character the most high-pitched possible voice.
