Sazh: Holy cow I did not expect Sazh to be anything remarkable, but he is BY FAR my favorite character in this game so far. VA is great, lines are great, just enough humor mixed with serious remarks and I look forward to any scene with him. His lines especially seem very well done. The chocobo is awesome too.
I like Sazh too. He sounds like Keith David to me (of Men at Work fame :D )

You know, this isn't unique to Final Fantasy by any means, but I hate the way they translate VA for Japanese games. Basically, I just hate the way the feel the need to record every grunt and strain as characters move / climb / jump. Uncharted 2 was a little silly about that, too, but it's kind of like watching a womens' tennis match.

I think that's the thing I hate most about Vanille, having to listen to every little "hmm" "ooo" "grumph" etc.

I like not having music on the XMB icon for the game. It's annoying when I power on my system to suddenly have whatever hangs there blaring music at me.

YEP. God of War Collection is terrible for this with its aggressive orchestral piece.

Uh, Snow sounded like Cam Clarke to me, but checking, it's someone else.

I expected him to become evil at some point only for that reason.

thos fortified enemies (at the sasz vanille part) take up to 10! min for one fight. am i doing something wrong?

nope. Sasz & Vanille are pretty weak and those enemies have massive HP. There's even a warning for you not to take them on!

There are no "better weapons", each new weapon you find will be Lvl. 1. Also, even though there is one Ultimate Weapon for each character the weapons retains the bonus given to very first tier-1 Lvl. 1 weapon, so you need to plan acordingly if you want to upgrade.

Can you explain this more plz? So even though every weapon starts off as Level 1 you don't get any with vastly superior starting stats? And regarding the "Ultimate Weapons" does this mean you get them via upgrading a normal weapon rather than finding them? So say I have a sword that speeds up the ATB on attacking, if I upgrade it to my "Ultimate Weapon" it'll retain that ability?

Jokes? ME2 is an RPG all the way. What makes FF13 an rpg and ME2 not one? To me ME is more of an RPG than FF13 is.
Some people need numbers and loot, despite the acronym 'RPG' having none of those things actually in it.

sorry to ask my question again, just didn't want it to get lost, my first ff and any (j)(w)rpg...not sure what to do with regards to levelling the characters...should i level them all up in 1 specialised role each or evenly level them all in all of the roles?

I don't know whether I prefer that or Mass Effect's method of complete silence. Neither feels natural.

I'm confused. what is Cocoon? Is it a hollow sphere with the cities on the inside of the sphere with the middle being the sky? Or is it like a sphere in the sky floating above an actual planet? Or is it a hollow planet with the cities on the outside and the lowerlands on the inside?

Also, spoiling just in case it's actually a spoiler. If you're past chapter 4 it should be fine.

When the Pulse vs Cocoon war occurred, was the Pulse side human? I mean, all the remnants were mechs and what not. Was it a rebellion because they were being sent to pulse? Or did that not start yet?

That one. It's explained in the prologue.

I wish they had attempted to show it though... I'm having difficulty imagining it.

Most gamers know what "RPG" commonly refers to, and that "playing a role" doesn't circumscribe the full set of qualities expected from games in the genre. This is similar to how 'Adventure' games don't necessarily involve any adventures and 'platformer' doesn't refer to every game with floating platforms.

Cocoon is a spherical, planet-like creation that hovers in the sky above Pulse.

The Hanging Edge and the ruins are located
in a scar/fracture in Cocoon caused during the War of Transgression with Pulse.

EDIT: Above too.

The game uses such high numbers in those hits early on. I dread to see the HP of later bosses in strategy guides and faqs considering how long some fights can last.

You can beat 99% of the bosses in the game in under 4 mins without any grinding. Even the final boss.

Don't worry about long drawn out fights. That's not the FFXIII system. Break -> do insane damage -> repeat 2-3x and boss is down.

Thanks...I've been playing the game for a few hours with that racking my brain. So
Pulse is the planet then and Cocoon is like a haven in the sky. I think I got it now.

I like Snow. Might be his VA who does an excellent job, but he really is just a dumb shonen hero. And that's fine, since he doesn't have a rival he's totally gay for to mess things up.

Snow's VA is really good, I agree. I keep getting reminded of Yuri from Tales of Vesperia, but Snow isn't as good as Yuri.

I'm surprised by how much I like the characters.

And the supposedly cheesy, terrible dialogue really isn't bad. You get the occasional gem like the infamous 'tough mom' line, but otherwise, everything's been pretty darn good. Very satisfied with the game.

Same VA, so yeah. He has the best dudebro voice in the business.

Lore/World Stuff:
So the fal'Cie Phoenix, or whichever acts as Cocoon's sun, must be at the Core of the 'shell'?

What do I do with these materials I'm gathering? Do I just sell them or are they used for item creation? I'm talking about these fluids and fangs I'm getting off enemies as spoils.

Each weapon you find starts at Level 1, Tier 1 with simple stats, you will not be finding any weapon that is not Lvl 1. The upgrade system works like this:

Level Tier 1 weapon to Star Level --> use an item = Tier 2 ----> level to Star level ---->use an item = Tier 3 aka Ultimate Weapon

Yes, each character's Ultimate Weapon has the same name, however it retains the ability of base item e.g. Belladonna Wand for Vanille has Improved Debuffing I, Tier 2 of that is Malboro Wand with Improved Debuffing II, which transforms into Nirvana (Ultimate Weapon), while keeping the Improved Debuffing aspect. Lightning's Gladius doesn't give any ability, however its Ultimate Weapon form has the highest raw ATK of all Tier 3 weapons available for Lightning, etc.

To make it a bit less crazy the trophy "All Weapons & Accessories" doesn't require you to have all the Ultimate Weapons for each character. Because they all share the same name once you make one it counts as any of the other ones.

No. He's simply
a Fal'Cie hovering in the sky, responsible for providing light to Cocoon

Maybe it is that I never played the original Woolsey translations; but there is nothing in FFXIII that makes me cringe as much as I cringed in every single scene involving Terra or Celes in FFVI or Cecil in FFIV. Have you tried replaying those games recently? The ridiculous part are perfectly fine, but it's impossible to not feel insulted every single time they try to take themselves seriously, which is pretty much all scenes involving the previously mentioned characters.

Edit: A quick look in Google seems to confirm that I did it wrong by not playing the Woolsey translations as they supposedly make the unbearable bearable. :/

So I need some help with a particular fight,
Shiva, I'm switching to Sentinel Paradigm and am rushing/canceling Vanguard before and after she attacks, but I just can't seem to get the gauge high enough before time runs out. Is there something I'm missing here?

I LOVE this game's boss fights.

Do regular fights get nearly as good as the boss fights eventually?

Be careful with what you wish for :lol I loved the boss fight in chapter 5 as well, the normal fights are very simple at the beginning but they will ramp up near chapter 8 or 9? There is even a normal mon. in chapter 6 that is very annoying to beat, will take lots of time and debuff for it, in fact you are advised to avoid it in the Japanese version! But yes, in chapter 11 the regular monsters will be very tough and could easily kill you if you don't pay attention, at that point you'll need to use magic, buff, debuff and stagger on them. Some of them are insane!

BTW does anyone know if you get more trophies for unlocking data about the monsters besides the 100 one? I've missed a few monsters scanning them 100% in the first 10 chapters and am afraid this could not get me all the trophies.

I'm still not done with the Japanese version but the limited edition EU version is on its way :D

Keep them. You'll need them later for weapons upgrading.
